      The only other real standout to me is Eric F. and he suffers from the same problem as Roy last season, only even more so. He’s incredibly creative and ambitious, but, as Glenn has pointed out, he overreaches and the final product suffers dramatically. Take, for example, the giant challenge, which he actually won. It’s an outright amazing accomplishment, given the time frame, but – objectively – not even in a made-for-TV movie on Disney or Nickelodeon….
      
      When I compare it to last season and all the great work from so many people (most of Laura’s work, Nicole’s later work, especially her cyborg, Sarah’s pirate, etc.), I can’t help but be disappointed.

Don’t even know what the challenge is – prom dresses?

Man, my Junior Prom was so utterly dreadful and equally so for my best friend – we double “dated” though “date” was not what was going on. Stone-snubbing, on the other hand, from our escorts was. We sat on a settee the whole damn time until one of the teacher chaperones corralled two boys in our class (very small prep school; very small class) to ask my friend and me to dance. We didn’t like those boys, and they didn’t like us, but I will always think well of Gary and Bruce for doing the gentlemanly thing 46 years ago.

I didn’t even go to my Senior Prom; went with another close friend and her parents to an amazing Tony Bennett performance at The Roostertail, the supper club back in Detroit waaaaay back then. And even though I knew, as a 17 year old, that Tony Bennett was really nifty, I still wanted to be at that wretched prom. If I could only turn back the clock so that I could have given Mr. Bennett the appreciation from me he deserved.

So… prom dresses are freighted with bum memories for me. Picture me scowling at the tube tonight.

My junior prom: Zilch.
But I took myself to my senior prom because I had enough friends then not to need to ‘fake a date’. I was openly queer and the captain of the football team (straight/lifelong friend since the 50′s) acted as my personal bouncer…and even danced a fast dance with me to break some faces…his girlfriend loved it – and I felt lucky.
A new teacher asked my why I was there “alone” and I replied: “I’m not alone, I’m with myself…and if I play my cards right, I MIGHT take me home and have my way with me!” It was great having my reputation precede me…the other chaperones just laughed and explained to the poor idiot who I was.

  Good on ya, Stella! You had great self-possession for a teenager, and you exhibited healthy, mature confidence. Hope that teacher learned something that night. What you did, however, never would have occurred at My Fancy Private Day School way back when. Some kids’ grades/classes were good (my brother’s three years below me); others were not ( my sister’s four years below me – every bit as clique-y and judgmental as mine – she left after two middle school years and went to Very Good Suburban High School since we’d moved into the ‘burbs, and she then fared much better). Luck of the draw.

  I offered to go with a friend who was gay because he was the only gay guy in school so it wasn’t like he could really take a date (At least, the only one who is out to this very day) just to run interference for him if necessary. He opted to ditch instead, saying he’d prefer I not get blood on his rented tux from decking some ass.

I only went to my junior prom so that I could make my own dress for it. It was in Tokyo, because I’m a Navy Brat. I made the dress with my mom, went long enough to have dinner, and blew out of there for some drinks at the clubs. I was WAY TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL. So were you, it would appear. Bum memories be damned.

      That which does not kill you makes you stronger, but the slights experienced in one’s youth do make an impression. I’m 46 years older than I was for that mid-winter (I’m recollecting February) Junior Prom, and 45 years older than that Senior Prom (yes, it’s a Reunion Year, and I don’t plan on attending). Lots of water under that bridge of life, with ups downs, triumphs and failures. What is good is that at more schools now there is no absolute pressure to bring a date – going to social functions is more a group activity, and I think that’s healthy. That just was not the norm back in the mid-60s, though.
      
      And, yes, it is WAY COOL to be hangin’ in the TLOunge.

      I am in a reunion year, also – 20th. I didn’t bring a date because I was busy dating fellows that were of legal age to serve in the military in an attempt to infuriate my high-ranking father, to no avail (he couldn’t have cared less what I did). I understand what you mean, though. Even 20 years ago, there was not much pressure to bring a date, or not for me, anyway. Certain girls seemed to feel it, but I purposefully cultivated the old “if you don’t care about it it can’t hurt you” attitude long before prom came around, so I just went with a coed group.

      I went to Junior prom with a bunch of girls – we paired up and got each other corsages, had dinner as a group, had our picture taken and just had a blast. Plus, I got to wear a beautiful vintage dress that I snagged from my aunt. I personally think we had more fun than any of the couples there.

      I never went to a prom, junior or senior. So true about the mid-sixties, going alone or with a girlfriend just wasn’t done. But the disappointment hung on for a long time. Even now, the song At Seventeen just kills me, I cannot listen to it.
      And I have never gone to any of my reunions either. My best friend and I hold our own personal reunions every five years or so. We graduated together, but have lived across the country for many years now.

      I had a reunion two years ago this coming May in Chicago with three girlfriends of mine from Our Big Ten University; we all lived on the same dorm floor for the first two years and met each other the first day we moved into the dorm, in the cafeteria line that evening for dinner, and it was kismet. Had a fabulous time with all of them – we stayed in a glorious Gold Coast B&B with a floor and two suites all to ourselves, just had a blast. A much more meaningful reunion than mouthing platitudes or snarkiness at high school classmates would be later this year… or five years from now when the big Five-Oh Reunion occurs (assuming I’m still alive…..).

      Project Runway may not be alive, but you may very well be, and for a lot longer than that. Serious health issues certainly do make us contemplate our own mortality, as does getting older, but modern medicine continues to amaze with treatments once unthought.       No, not an Illinois school. I’m a Wolverine. We chose Chicago for our reunion because one of our quartet lives in the Chi ‘burbs and another had lived in Chi for nearly 30 years and was a great guide for our perambulations. I hadn’t been there in decades, too, so it was a wonderful opportunity to see the Art Museum, the Field Museum and the Frank Lloyd Wright studio and houses in Oak Park, among other sights. We’re hoping to do it again in a few years.

      My mom went with a girlfriend in 66 — but her school had the policy that you couldn’t bring anyone who didn’t attend the school and she was already engaged to a guy who was a few years older. There were a lot of girls doing the same thing for the same reason there.
      
      I skipped prom — seemed to me like it was going to be spending an entire night listening to crappy music with people I couldn’t stand the rest of the week or people that I could hang out with any other time for free.
      
      The most interesting prom system I’ve seen was a school near my hometown. Small Catholic school. They do a lottery for prom — every kid who wants to go gets a date from the lottery, you aren’t allowed to take anyone else. Shockingly enough, there’s not really any stories of “I got someone I hated and he was a total dick all night.” And it’s voted on by the class every year and they always vote to continue it. When they have an uneven number of boys and girls, they just assign some of whichever has less 2 dates. It apparently started due to a lack of guys during WWII

      No such thing as a prom at my all-girls English boarding school, but my kids, who went to U.S. city public schools, did the full-on prom scene. They all had nominal dates, (mostly for the photo-ops) but it was more of an excuse to dress up and party, rent the limo, etc. No duct tape dresses, but I’ve seen some pretty amazing ones on the internets.

  Ann, no boy in my class (31 girls, 19 boys) asked me. My date was a kissin’ cousin from across the state. My folks arranged it with his parents (who were my siblings’ godparents). His whole family came in for the weekend, and I confided about the fiasco of an evening to his sister, who’s a lifelong dear friend/practically sister to me, that night. I fixed my best friend up with the boy across the backyard fence, and I swear, though those two guys had never met, they caucused and decided to not dance the whole evening. Humiliating. Them were harsh days back in the mid-60s.
  
  My ‘non-dancing date’ still is a kissin’ cousin, and he was two years behind me at the same law school 7 years later. I see him only every decade or so, and I do love him because of everything else, but I’ll always hold that night against him, though I’ve never discussed it with him!

  I almost didn’t go my senior year until I asked an exchange student that I’d sort of been dating – he went to another school. No one believed he would be my date, since he’d had his picture in the paper for basketball and because he was an outrageously good-looking blond viking from Norway. It was great to walk in to prom on his arm and have everyone stare.

Actually, this challenge is one that’s been going on in the DIY/craft world for some time. Duck Tape sponsors it (obviously) and people design prom dresses/outfits to compete for a $5000 scholarship, plus the winner’s school gets $5000, too. It’s really popular. That’s why there’s been an expansion of the colors and prints of duck tape in the past few years. Google it and you’ll find all kinds of interesting garments.

And as an aside, a popular sewing blogger who lives in NY was shopping at MOOD recently and was assisted by none other than PR Season 10′s Kooan (aka Frokémon), who apparently works there now.

      I saw her last week on our local NYC 24 hour TV channel, NY1. It was a profile of a political/charitable organization that she runs. It took me a few hours to place her because the profile had nothing to do with design (or any other art). Again, shows how little “reality” there is in reality TV.

    Well according to her, he helped her find a gorgeous red silk gazar for a dress she’s making. From the pics she posted of it, it looks lovely. It wasn’t clear whether or not he knew what he was doing though, since she was originally looking for silk organza. It might have been a case of knowing that the gazar would do what she wanted it to better than the organza, or it might have been that he thought it was just a more opaque organza. I just find it amusing that he works there now, proving that you can make connections for a job almost anywhere.

  He does work there!!! I was in NY over the Christmas holidays and we visited Mood. I didn’t realize until afterward it was him. I asked another salesperson and they confirmed it was him. The store was really busy and I couldn’t find him after that.
  
  But one of the highlights of the trip was seeing AUSTIN SCARLETT eating in the same restaurant for Christmas dinner!! Sadly, I was too embarrassed to ask him for a photo or an autograph. I’ll be kicking myself for a long time.

      hi, shannon. i have kind of an unusual reaction to steroids. i was given oral prednisone in the past for severe asthma, and i had a psychotic reaction. after it was all over (about 3 weeks), my doctor said that 4% of people who take oral steroids get what’s called “steroid psychosis”. that’s a lot of people if you consider it’s a commonly used drug. it was the scariest thing that ever happened to me. i thought, among other delusions, that there were snipers outside my house trying to kill me. so, no more oral steroids for me. now when i get a spinal injection i have a mild manic reaction which is pleasant for me, except i can’t sleep! anyway, that may be tmi, but i do love to talk…

      I have that reaction to morphine (and codeine gives me night terrors) — I have been known to attack nurses. One I actually tried to bite. It’s unfortunate. I know where mine came from though; I had it as a local and they OD’d me to the point I couldn’t do anything voluntary — couldn’t talk, couldn’t move, couldn’t even tell them, and couldn’t mention that it wasn’t doing anything for the pain so I got to feel everything they did — for about 10 minutes. Now I tell them not to give it to me unless it’s in an epidural, which is no problem, or synthetic forms, because I react fine to those.

      From someone 30-odd years away from proms, the cliques are all gone at this point. A lot of the people we all thought were so cool in high school peaked in high school. Many people who never made a dent in the social strata are doing amazingly well. It’s hard to see it at your age, but it’s really all pretty insignificant 5-10 years down the line. Have a great time, dance your ass off! (And, for bonus karma points, pick out a couple of girls who aren’t dancing or looking like they’re having a terrible time to dance with…)

    Ours used to end up mid-March occasionally too. All of the schools nearby coordinated both prom and homecoming so that everyone had it on a different day, so that students could take dates from other towns — an important measure when 90% of the student body are cousins… (You have no idea how much I wish I was kidding about that…)

I remember that during the late summer of 2006 I was writing elaborate e-mail recaps of Season 3 shows, with pix, and sending them to my young niece in Kenya… she was entranced, and I was, too, because I was quite caught up in the characters, especially Laura Bennett, Uli and Jeffrey Sebelia. and, of course, crazy Vincent. That season had Robert Best and Malan, too. Wow, a lot of talent and personality back then.

My prom dress (actually, my boyfriend’s college prom, in 1968) was a very elegant white linen gown, with tiny accents of pink flowers on the neckline. The wow factor was a panel of white linen down the back. I wore long gloves, the color of the pink flowers, and matching earrings. No none else wore anything like it. If I could still fit into it, I’d wear it today.

The camerawork during the runway walks is execrable. All jittery camera and strobes. I want to see the doggone garment – front and back. Not the designer’s name taking up a third of the screen and strobed stutter shots that may be “arty” but don’t give the finished works their due. If we didn’t see the stills from Our Boys the day after I wouldn’t know how half these dresses really appear.

In doing a quick google of 2013 prom dresses I can see what the kids liked about it. A big recurring style was the mullet skirt. Super short in front, long in back. They were the only one that had that style. I like theirs least but I’m approaching 40 whose girls still shop the little girls section so what do I know.

That was the most whacked judging I’ve ever witnessed. I see lots of prom dresses on the street every year (as they go to dinner) and the one most likely to be worn around here was Kate and Tu’s. Seriously – Patricia’s and Samantha’s was truly horrendous – and talk about coming dangerously close to revealing the good china. I actually really liked Amanda and Michelle’s but by no stretch of the imagination was it a prom dress. And Layana and Stanley – all I can think of when seeing it is those old-fashioned Christmas bowls made of Christmas cards strung together with yarn. Do they still make those anymore?

I had the same thought as you about Layana’s and Stanley’s dress, and yes, Bob, they do still make those old-fashioned Christmas bowls from Christmas cards. It’s a popular craft for Seniors (and I don’t mean the high school variety).

  I recently went prom gown shopping with my niece and EVERYTHING that the girls were trying – and more importantly what was selling – were long and with the same silhouette as Tu and Kate’s. She bought this amazing bubble gum pink strapless number in the same shape which for the first time made her look like a grown woman. Her mom – in between sobs of happiness – said “…my god, you look like a woman” and K turned around grabbed her boobs and said “I AM a woman!” That’s my girl!
  
  I so enjoyed watching the truly annoying Richard and the Countess of SoCo have their little love fest ripped to shreds as it was indeed a horrible dress and should have been the one to go BUT, they’re still in cannon fodder mode and haven’t squeezed everything out of those 2…

    Awwww I love that story. Maybe I’m the old-fashioned one (sorry Nina!), but I do think – in general – that teenage girls view dressing up/older as something that one does in a long dress. Doesn’t mean it isn’t sexy, womanly, or boring (although, the KaTu gown could have benefited from a more inspiring color). I can see a lot of girls liking the top three dresses for a lot of events; a prom? Except for Patricia’s skirt that straddled the long/short conundrum and gave it an evening edge, I think not. There was nothing remotely formal about the winner or the Barbie concoction, although both were technically beautiful and fun to take in. Although length trends may vary, prom traditionally means “formal.” Short, swingy cocktail or play-date dresses generally do not meet that description.
    
    I have a feeling that Kate’s description of why they chose that silhouette – what was it, so that a girl could take a picture with her dad while her date still went “dang!” – was very spot on in terms of its appeal to young ladies like your niece. I bet she looked spectacular that night!

Based on tonight’s results, I think the concepts of “prom dress” and “duct tape” don’t really mesh well. The duct tape idea really pushed most of the designers to make interesting dresses, but nowhere near something one would see or wear as a prom dress.

I can smell some producer manipulation here… The look I liked the least was Daniel’s and Richard’s, but the way the judges talked about them was in a way that they were clearly judges’ pets, and I could tell from the get-go they were not going home tonight. Kate and Tu will be missed, as they were probably my favorites. I will say that I did like Michelle’s and Amanda’s the most, even if it was a too far out there to be a prom dress. But again, duct tape.

In other news, we now have our eight designers! So we’ll get to know who made which finale collection!

Nina: I’ve known all along that she’s a nitwit, and I’ve consistently expressed that view (and marveled as to how someone boasting such an extensive list of credentials could be so deficient be it verbally or aesthetically), but her commentary– HEROES to ZEROS; Long? LONG? Long! For prom?– this particular episode had bile take the elevator to my esophagus and shimmy in my mouth. I’ve never/ever stated that I won’t watch PR for any reason, but she may be it. It’s going to take an elephantine effort to barrel vomit back to my empty basement.

I have not liked Nina AT ALL since the year Gretchen won. I’ve said it before here, and I’m not particularly proud of it, but I dislike her so much, and I’ve let her know how I never agree with her critiques or choices on PR, that she finally blocked me on Twitter.

I’m just glad someone else seems to share my feelings. I am not alone.

Oh, and aren’t Daniel and Richard more than a bit fake? YUP. Richard puts on his want-to-come-across-as-sultry voice, and Daniel flashes his dentures (trust me on this, I know from a friend of a friend of a friend) and adopts a “my belly’s about to burst and my mustache is juggling candy and my balls are jiggling” intended-as-jolly demeanor. Oh, kids. Oops, these two aren’t kids. OK then, forty-something inexperienced camera whores. Coz post-coital and post-food munching voices ain’t what camera savvy contestants do. Highlight the producers’ worn out tactics, you bitches. Have someone like Kimberly or Viktor exclaim upon being told he/she is not this season’s winner “I know I wasn’t going to win. Of course Anya is gonna win, and I’ll just SUUUUCK it like a beauty queen”. That’s what I would have done.

Maybe I need to watch this episode once more so I can be sure I heard the stupendous BS I think I heard. LIARS.
I fully expect Nina’s tongue to turn black and fall out (just like my parents said would happen if I had the nerve to unload that garbage).
There is no way Samantha & Patricia’s dress was a better look than Daniel & Richard, or Kate & Tu. Ugh.. the things that were said.
That dress was a tacky (no pun), unflattering, deflated balloon. I think PR just got punked by some students. Or more likely – since we

didn’t see the actual count; something closer to button-bag magic was used. Since a very pretty bodice that Samantha constructed
was still on the form (which looked so much better than the final choice); I am inclined to believe – no hell no – I DO believe it was
Patricia’s long overdue time to go. Yes D&R’s gold design was pure 80s; but it had better construction, the craftiness of the faux side
corseting, the expert flounces, the fit – it was even more flattering than the droopy, loose, wonder-woman cartoon of S&P.
K&T”s was also more prom-friendly, and the fit was better, it was abit boring in color and in the adornment that was added – I think
if had been even more sleek and revealing; it would have won more teen-votes. (it certainly would have had Heidi’s) But it was still
a pretty dress. And to Zac’s credit; girls do wear long gowns, as well as short. It can change from place to place, and the tastes will
often change from season to season; it’s all out there. From princess to near house arrest.
Michelle & Amanda worked very well together; and I thought the design was a winner, even if it was one of the least likely prom types.
(and I thought the cutouts were a mistake)
Stanley & Layanna’s was sort of pretty; I loved the skirt – but the top wasn’t that great to me – and it didn’t really fit the bottom in style.
I thought they all accomplished alot in the time allowed. I would like to have seen Kate in the final three. Damn. It.

You are entitled to your opinion, but imho a tacky deflated mylar balloon is a cool shape for a duct tape challenge and the original duct tape color added to the camp-i-ness. All the designs had merit, but this was not make a “pretty” dress challenge.

  It was make a dress for prom-challenge. For some that meant make a real dress, for others it meant a costume
  or parody of a dress. They were all making a sculpture of a dress, because of the material. The judges didn’t really
  seem to care if it was one or the other, as long as it was creative. Tim encouraged creativity; which makes all kinds
  of sense to me since it’s duct tape. But the reason I thought S&P’s dress was a fail isn’t the idea (so much) as the
  execution. I think that ALL the dresses turned out better than theirs. It wasn’t that they went space alien, it was just
  that it was really bad looking space alien. Theirs was the only one that looked like cheap tin foil, to me. And I am
  totally not impressed with Patricia’s handiwork, or the crumpled half pouffy skirt. I think there was alot of genius in
  M&A’s design, and it was so much better looking on the model. And those are not even my favorite colors. And it was
  not a traditional ‘pretty dress’ – it was not really a prom look either; but it was the best dress on the RW tonight.
  All the dresses had some amazing work in them, except I don’t really see it in S&P’s; even if it was time consuming to
  make. I thought Samantha had a beautiful start on a design, but saw that Patricia could not make a bottom to go with it.
  So she scraped her’s to make something to match the skirt Patricia was making. I think the dress was hugely over-
  praised by the judges; yes, the back closure was kind of nice… but not to the epic Nina bedazzlement.
  Still, thats just my opinion… I am not the all knowing PR fan; I just spout about what I think I’m looking at, so it’s
  perfectly ok with me to disagree, if you like.

The Greedy Gold Queens …HA! The Gold should go home but I doubt if they will let go of either of these personalities! Theirs was absolutely the least exciting and poorly made…zero energy. Sort of cruel letting Kate thing she was still safe. Nope…the traditional but VERY well executed gown team is aufed.

To my utter joy, and at times, dismay, I find myself working as the librarian in a public high school. Last year I chaperoned the prom, and so I feel like I can offer this bit of opinion from a recent experience.

Tu and whats-her-name’s dress was prom-impractical because there was NO WAY a girl could booty-drop in that thing. And it seems that, at least in my school, that is all that is involved in dancing.

Richard and Daniel’s dress was dated and boring, but a girl could dance in it.

I’m 23 so prom wasn’t too far back for me and both of my dresses (for junior and senior proms) were long. And most of my classmates also wore long dresses. Most of the prom dresses now are still long but very few of them look like Kate’s and Tu’s which I thought was definitely too serious and stiff. And that color was absolutely wrong. I did like Amanda’s and Michelle’s best because I felt it was the most visually interesting (though I didn’t like the bust and the cutouts). And as much as I personally like mullet hems (of the flowy variety) Samantha’s and Patricia’s was just doing nothing for me.
