Selena gets the Terry Richardson treatment for Harper’s Bazaar. The good news is she managed not to flash panties. The bad news is the pictures couldn’t be any duller.

Selena Gomez covers the April 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by Beth Fenton.

But before we get to trashing Terry Richardson…

On having two deliberate fashion personalities: “If I’m going to the MTV Movie Awards, I’m going to dress a certain way, but if I’m going to the MTV Music Awards, it can be a little more out there. I mean, I’m probably the only one that notices, but, there’s two distinct Selenas.”

ATTAGIRL. This is probably our Number One bit of advice for budding fashionistas. You should not only know your venue, you should have a range of looks devised for various venues. That is to say, many fashionistas – especially those in the public eye – do not dress the same way all the time. They have a range of personae that they cycle through based on their moods and where they’re going. This is why it’s always better to have a wardrobe than to have a set of outfits hanging in your closet. Outfits are limiting; a wardrobe is full of possibilities.

As for Terry Richardson, we just don’t get this guy. Why hire someone who works hard to ensure his pictures look as amateur as possible? Little tip for the editors out there: an actual amateur would give you the exact same shots for a couple hundred bucks and a Selena autograph.

    I wished I had justifiable reason, but I believe its the same reason I dislike Taylor Swift. On paper they are very likable, but something about the execution about public persona annoys me. Not to mention, her and Swift are BFF, so that probably doesn’t help.

I loath Terry Richardson with the fires of a thousand Hells.

Selena is a beautiful young woman, I doubt she’ll make it big and will likely fade away, but maybe she’ll get cast in just the right role. I’ve been enjoying her fashion choices lately, but these photos do nothing for her. Of course her mouth is open, of course her dress is being pulled up. Not shown here is another shot where she’s under a giant opening flower umbrella, because – of course.

And, other than the cover outfit, could they have picked things that suited her less? That Dior thing is atrocious on her, and the Prada is so badly posed it looks shapeless and ill fitting.

    See now, as a costumer and lover of the shiny, satin is a friend of mine. And I think it can be deployed with style and grace. That Dior thing is Hih-Dee-Uss in every respect. I think it would be awful in any textile.

Could they possibly have picked three more boring and strange looking outfits for this photo shoot? Perhaps they might work in a setting that evokes a certain mood, but with the plain pink background, and her less than stellar poses they leave me with and “I don’t get it” opinion of clothes from three “big name” fashion houses.

Am I the only one who thinks that all of the clothing in this editorial sucks? Some elements are cute, but then – a red striped romper thing? A white top/dress that is overly complicated and not at all flattering? An orange dress with a misplaced apron hanging off of it? Just – no. Stop. Please. Stop.

I hate this guy’s photographs. Why just put someone up against the wall like that? Dull is right, which is unfortunate because she has such a strong personality.

Could the Terry Richardson hate be part of the reason he continues to get hired? If you use him, you may to get press coverage that you can’t get by using a more competent and less disgusting photographer. I can almost see the meeting – “We can’t count on pictures being great anyway so let’s hire someone who will bring in some hate-viewers. At least we can be sure of that.”
