Kate Winslet for Harper’s Bazaar UK

We miss Kate.

We admit, she got on our nerves and lost some points with us back in her Oscar poledancing days (much the same way Miss Hathaway is now getting the brunt of the public’s cranky post-awards season exhaustion today). She did what so many lady stars do when they stake a claim to the statuette: she turned herself into one. We always enjoyed the Kate who’s funny and bawdy and didn’t seem up her own ass so much. The Serious Actress version of Kate left us bored. We thought maybe her surprise marriage to a guy named Rocknroll would ignite some of that old fire, and for all we know, maybe it has, but Mrs. Rocknroll is still working an uber-glam look for British Harper’s:

On learning about herself: “I’ve really learned a great deal about myself, in the last four years in particular. I think I can see more clearly now – about how the pattern of past experiences has shaped who I am, and the characters I have played – and I’m grateful for that.”

On her past experiences shaping her: “I have so much more material to draw on for work – rubble, bricks – and I know I can carry it now.”

Y’know, if this was a couple of years ago, we’d probably bemoan all the perfection on display, but like we said: we miss her. We’ll take it. She does look fabulous, after all.

  Funny and wonderful how the mere 2 words “Hitchcock Blonde” evoke something so right that we know, immediately, what is meant: Beauty, vulnerability and intelligence encompassed in a brittle shell of intrigue… A masterful little moniker that Tippy, Kim, etal (AND Kate here) should wear proudly.

      Honestly, I’ll bet she’d also like to keep her thoughts to herself. To her great credit, when she’s not working, we rarely see her. Unlike some other gals around her age, she’s not trying to create a Winslet brand. I’m willing to believe that, when not making a movie, she actually is looking after her own kids.
      
      What I’ll never forget – and always respect – is that her first wedding reception was held in the local pub. Just regular pub grub and beer.. That’s my kind of party!

  She lost a noticeable amount of weight when she was poledancing for that Oscar. She also went blonde and–gasp–tan! It really made me miss the old Kate, who was not only a fabulous actress but kind of a badass about body acceptance and speaking your mind.

I immediately thought of the Bert Stern photos of Marilyn Monroe (supposedly her last sitting). The b/w, the hair, the dark dress. It’s a nice tribute and not too copy-cat.

Boring and neutral. She looks like Madonna, Gwen Stefani and any number of other bleach blond women all rolled into one photoshopped display of “perfection”. She was so much more interesting once upon a time with a great smile and beautiful eyes. A black and white photospread with no smiling is not playing to her assets.

Could someone please explain to me how to get such a perfect cat-eye, even over the crease? Mine always jog a bit at the crease, and when I try to fill in the the jogged part, I end up looking like someone punched me in the corner of my eye. Not the whole eye, just the corner.

The usual silly Great Actress in Black and White Photos comments. She continues to give off this vibe that smacks of butter not melting in her mouth. It’s all just really too too. Nice photos even though she oozes something out of Blade Runner to me. Hitchcock Blondes were icy and composed on the surface and full of vulnerability,insecurities on the inside–Much like Alfred himself perhaps. These photos are beautiful but weirdly cold. She’s a wonderful actress — always brave and not afraid to look unattractive.
