Some of these outfits look fabulous but others (e.g., the shapeless leather dress in the 2nd row, the fur skirt in the third) … well, the kindest thing I thought was “Maybe these look better in person.”

You’re right, but it looks like those items are actually red and there are blue tones in the lights that are making the fabric seem more dark pink with a hint of orange. I’m just going by how some of the other textiles look.

It’s like sometimes he remembers to take his ADD meds, and some times he doesn’t. I feel like the tulip hems and the peplums and the sheer hems are uuuuugh. That silver suit third row from bottom was pure Tilda. He should have given more of that.

I guess it’s a follow-up to her ‘how to be a chic mommy’ guide that came out in 2010: “Didn’t I Feed You Yesterday?: A Mother’s Guide to Sanity in Stilettos”. I haven’t even glanced through this one but I’ve paged through the newer one at Barnes and Noble and I have to say that it’s not really fashion-oriented at all. It has instructions for making things like belts and bags; the closest it gets to actual fashion you can wear is embellishing store-bought items. Personally, I think she’s wasting her time with this, since there are bloggers who sew that produce better books (Sarai Mitnick comes to mind). The main complaint from people is that she recommends using real leather and fur and that’s kind of controversial for home sewers. I guess it’s supposed to be her way of showing people that even the home sewer can create high-end looking accessories, but I’d rather see something more garment-oriented.

There are a couple of lovely pieces here, but I agree that this collection is derivative and ….. kind of dated. I keep thinking that Christian should be producing something younger and edgier (maybe just because of his age and his personal style) and I’m always disappointed.

I think his work is maturing, but this collection is maybe too illustrative of the learning process?

That said, I very much like the middle and right hand dresses in the next-to-last row, really dislike just about all of the metallics, and want to see several of the other pieces on non-models.

I think he’s strongest when he’s focusing on making a woman look and feel pretty and feminine.

There are some stunning pieces, but the collection is uneven.

I love the pantsuits and I’m happy to see dressy ladypants on any RC.

Maybe it’s the model’s hair that suggests it, but I can see Michelle Williams in the red suit in row 7.

The suit in row 8 at the right end is for moi.

I thought the same thing about the red suit; I do think it’s the model’s hair, as the suit itself isn’t really in Michelle Williams’s retro-twee wheelhouse. I was thinking that the person to wear it would need to look very modern and edgy in order not to look like the stylish mother of the groom at the rehearsal dinner.

Most of this is really beautiful, consider that black and gold is becoming a thing right now. Even though D&G did a bunch of it last year, it is catching on. Of course, those of us in flyover country won’t see any in the stores until next year sometime, I’m sure….
Anyway–the only real clunker is the shiny gold lame (la-may!) shirtdress. Really ugly. Some others come close to clunking, but other pieces are divine–the gold-timmed black caplet for one. The pelum dress in the last row is beautiful as well.

I miss the volume and excess in his earlier collections. I am, admittedly, a ‘more is almost enough’ kind of gal, so these feel skimpy and almost stingy to me. I probably wouldn’t have recognized this as his work if it was shown to me without the introduction.

i love how christian used to want to use nothing but women of color back in his PR and post-PR days, but now that he’s got big-money backers, there’s nary a black model in sight.

We don’t know anything about the circumstances and obligations that led to the choice of models. His collections have featured non-white models–and this was after getting “big-money backers.” The lack of women of color on runways is very real and important to discuss, but I don’t know that it’s fair to call out the princess for shying away from women of color, because he generally hasn’t. I could easily go through a dozen major collections this year and most years, and point out the same lack of color on the runway.

Like I said, it’s an important issue, but I cringe to see an industry-wide problem placed on his shoulders and assumptions made about his character, as if the models in this one collection are a signal that Christian Siriano has bowed to corporate pressure and refused to employ black models. That’s a big assumption, and there’s evidence from previous shows and collections–including the Spiegel collection, probably his most commercial (big-money backer, as it were)–to suggest a different point of view.

Some hits and misses. The fur skirt needs to disappear into the void and never be seen again, but the little strapless black and gold beside it is fabulous. I’m way over the peplum look in the middle of the last row, but the classic Siriano puffy skirt dress beside it very pretty. (And come on — a ballet theme calls for the tutu look somewhere!) The two capelet looks are good, though I I am choking just looking at the high-collared one, but that shapeless thing in the muted print above them is a hot mess.

The simple LBDs in rows five and six aren’t the world’s most original, but they’re very cute.
