IN or OUT: Diane Lane in Dolce&Gabbana

We think Diane Lane is gorgeous and could make just about any look work for her, but we’re having problems with this one.

Diane Lane attends the 24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in Dolce&Gabbana.

The shoes are classically awesome and the clutch is pretty. We won’t even mention that they match. The dress fits her well and makes her figure look fantastic. But KITTENS. All that LACE. PINK freaking LACE. We just can’t. D&G needs to get the hell over the lace thing they’ve been doing lately because it tends to only look good on 19-year-old models. And actresses (especially actresses of a certain age) need to stay the hell away from it. The only reason this works is because she’s beautiful, has a great body, and accessorized well. But that dress needs to go.

Are we wrong here? Too harsh? Do you hate us for using the euphemism “of a certain age?”

  I’m ok with that color on her. I am not ok with her dressed as the mother of the bride at a mid-afternoon wedding in Palm Springs…no matter what designer’s name is on the label. In fact, if you search you will see that this dress was featured on a bridal blog as a MOB dress (omgimgettingmarried).

  I agree. With the shoes somehow the impression I got was monochrome, which seems impossible given the color of the dress, but there you have it. I’m not going to go so far as to call it out; she looks pretty enough; but I wouldn’t give it an in, either.

If it’s a case of in or out, I have to say IN. There’s not enough to hate for it to be an out. Sure, it’s kind of a mundane, mother-of-the-bride adjacent look, but it really shows off her figure and the pink is good with her coloring. Matchy accessories are two different grays and I’m not sure how I feel about that, but its a small quibble.

I love everything about it EXCEPT the pink lace. The cut is fantastic on her. It covers up just enough but shows that she has a great body. The shoes, bag, hair and makeup are all TDF. But that pink lace. Oy.

Not crazy about the colour, and the dress is solid (if dull), but the problem is where the lace is on top of skin, particularly around the neckline. There’s this strange moulting thing going on, blending her face and neck with the body of the dress. More of a foundation layer would have improved that, but it’s the wrong dress to begin with. OUT.

Sorry guys, I disagree on this one. First of all, that doesn’t look pink to me. It looks violet. Second, it looks gorgeous on her body. Yeah, I gotta slam you for using the “of a certain age” tagline. This dress is sexy while still being modest. It’s fitted without being too tight. She’s a beautiful woman with a slamming body. I don’t see anything about lace that makes it only for the young. I like it.

It’s not the lace as a concept that bugs me, but this particular use of it looks, dare I sat it,…cheap. A very close facsimile is probably on the holiday markdown rack at Dress Barn. Plus, the color is not inspired and does poor Diane no favors whatsoever.

The problem is the hair…it’s just too damn big. The business grey accessories aren’t helping either. Streamline the hair and swap out the shoes and purse and the dress can be saved. Nevertheless, the accessories and hair are what they are, so she’s getting a big ol’ OUT.

IN only for fit, confidence and overall fabulosity. I agree the accessories are good but the gray is way wrong with this dress. That said, nothing would be right with it – although I salute D&G for finding a clever way to recyle the covering from a drugstore Valentine candy box. Imagine this fit in a nice knit in the right shade of yellow, green or blue, and she would be so killing it.

  I find it very entertaining that the boundaries of “of a certain age” seem to have shifted with all the appearance & health enhancing techniques we have now. I remember when it started in the 40s and ran into the 50s, maybe just grazing the 60s, but by 67 (e.g., Ms. Mirren) no-one (except maybe a couple of French women) was referred to as such except to flatter. By the time 70 hove into sight, our female relatives were “older” and mostly downright “elderly.”
  
  I’m all for it. I aspire to be referred to as “of a certain age.” To me it implies that there might be some doubt, in the right light.

At what age does “of a certain age” begin? Is it anyone over 40? Asking for a friend.

As for the dress, I’m not a big fan of overall lace…or really lace of any kind outside the boudoir - but I don’t hate this. I love that she chose gray for shoes, wish the clutch didn’t match. If she was going to a wedding, I would totally give this an IN. Since she’s not, I gotta go with….IN….cuz it fits beautifully, can’t see her lady bits, her hair is shiny and pretty – and I love her.

  I think “of a certain age” *used* to begin in the 40s (date not specified because it basically started when your lie that you were in your “late 30s” was no longer believable) and continue up till maaaaybe barely the earliest 60s, when we became old, or even elderly. Except to flatter or for selected French women. But the way how we’ve learned to maintain appearance and good health has extended “middle age” applies also to “of a certain age.” So I’m sure it extends later, and may be thought to start later.
  
  This is all just the way I think of it – there’s no authority behind my opinions.

In. It’s not even within miles of my favorite fabric, it’s a hideous fabric, in a color I do not love, but it fits her beautifully and she looks great. It’s a simple, classic shape. She’s looked better, but it’s not actually causing her skin to look three-days-dead (or if it is, her makeup artist fixed that).

And there are people who like lace. And lavender-pink (the color it looks on my monitor.)

Ageist comment, boys. Really. Even a 19 year old would look like a 60s bridesmaid in this dress. The color is atrocious. Diane is slammin in this but the color looks like Pepto Bismol that’s been sitting unused in the back of a medicine chest for 10 years. Her makeup, hair, bod, shoes, everything is awesome but that dress, so it has to be an OUT, but not because she’s “of a certain age.” Bad form, guys.

To me, this is reminscint of that awful pink thing Josh did on PR All-Stars a couple of weeks back (I forget the exact challenge). This is better, but it is all kinds of blah. There isn’t anything special other than it being made out of pink lace. And pink lace is a bit tacky, no? I will say OUT, even though she is quite beautiful despite the dress.

It’s the color. Too much lilac-pink paired with lipstick and blush which is goes the other direction. Still, probably no color of make-up could have made this work. That lilac-pink belongs on tweens. OUT.

It isn’t really Barbie pink, I think it has too much purple in it to be that bad. She looks amazing even if I’m not in love with the dress. I love the grey shoe. IN in my book.

Like the hair, makeup, shoes, bag and dress shape. Think EITHER pink OR lace would have been better. Having said that, Diane Lane is the epitome of class, grace and intelligence in anything she wears or does, so she gets away with a mauvy-pink allover lace dress better than anyone I can think of. Except maybe the Queen.

Love the shoes. The dress, regardless of color, is matronly. The matronliness is slightly negated by her being slender, but I have seen this sort of dress on a million women at political dinners and Bar Association meetings. You know, the sort of venues where you need to look dressed up but not glamorous; formal but not too stodgy.

If she were going out to dinner or appearing on a talk show, I would be fine with this. For the venue, though, I have to give her a lukewarm out.
