Miss Emma gets a little Courtney Love going on, as she goes the dirty/sexy route for W.

Emma Stone covers the February 2013 issue of W magazine photographed by Juergen Teller and Styled by Zoe Bedeaux.

Marc Jacobs crinkled patent leather jacket, and bra.

Alexander McQueen silk organza bustier dress.

Balmain silk blend dress. Prism polyamide blend bikini top.

It’s all bare feet, bras, and the occasional princess dress. We don’t think this is much within her wheelhouse, but it’s fine if she wants to shoot for edgy every now and then. It’s something different for her, and that’s not a bad thing for a young actress to try. At least they didn’t go the smeared-mascara-and-tiara route.

Love her, but she’s not pulling that off.

I can’t think of any actress under 30 that can pull it off. Maybe Kristin Stewart, but even though she’s dark, she’s still too controlled. None of them are unpredictable enough to be convincing. Even Linsey Lohan is too compliant, not enough fukyou. Not that I’m in any way a fan of Courtney Love, but when she was young she had something, and the first Hole album’s powerful. There’s a willingness to abandon vanity, status and civility for artistic discovery that I can’t imagine current stars achieving. They’re all so calculated and appropriate. It’s a bit depressing.

Eh. It’s boring and kind of depressing to me in a very dated, 90s CK1 kind of way. And that’s just my initial aesthetic response. My inner photographer is wondering why they used such harsh lights so that her gorgeous skin is practically obliterated into corpse flesh. Guess it keeps the post-processing work simpler, but egads, way to make a pretty girl look spun and strung out. I’m having a particularly harsh reaction to the second shot below the cover where she’s in the corner wearing a fancy blacksmithing apron. Is that a meant to be a romper? *shudders*
