I love snow, mostly because our snow is such a tease. “Six inches of snow tonight, guaranteed—oh wait, it’s just one inch of snow, then ice, then it’s going to rain for six days and be 48 degrees and cloudy.” To me that’s worse than snow. But hey, let’s buy every loaf of bread and gallon of milk anyway…

      Conversation tends to suck, but I’ll never be that cold again, and I live six blocks from the beach.
      
      But if not, I recommend fur jacket/coat (or, at least, fake fur) as the only way to get through a New York winter. (Plus fur/sheepskin-lined boots and gloves, and hat.)
      
      Down and wool and bulky layers just don’t cut it.

      Amen, sister. 20 years ago I gave away my vintage calf-length fur coat and said I’d never do a New England winter again and, knock on wood, I haven’t had to. Except this year, that freak nor’easter in early Nov caught me out. Here’s to reading TLo a half-day later than everyone else.

      I’ve lived here for most of my 33- I moved a few years ago, in great part to get away from the cold, and ended up quickly running right the hell back. It might be cold right now, but in the long run and as someone who goes where the jobs in my field are: cold NYC > warm and balmy (almost) everywhere else IMO.

Hardly any rain? When I lived there the freeway was flooded for at least three weeks straight every winter. Here in the North Valley it snows leaves in Autumn, which is quite the driving challenge, but so pretty the rest of the time it’s worth the struggle.

  I don’t remember that weather. We did have some flooding in ’95 but it’s pretty rare. I have friends in Tulsa and Billings who laugh when I mention bad weather. Apparently ice storms are worse than a little rain.

      I was in Oregon for a bad one about fifteen years ago, ice and very high wind. Gets pretty scary when the iced over powerlines are snapping and huge trees start fragmenting. I’ve been through big quakes, but I’m still most scared by tornadoes/hurricanes. Probably because it’s the only thing I haven’t been in yet.

My oldest is at school in Davis and we were remarking that they get about twice the rainfall there than we get in SoCal. I’m always happy to see some rain.

  Ha, I’m from Boston and I pretty much never wear gloves unless I’m actually working with my hands, outside, for hours. No hat, either, unless it’s a really exceptionally cold day.

  Not necessarily. It depends on what bothers you about the weather. Yesterday in Detroit it was about 30 degrees, snow mixed with rain (an awful combination, like having slushies rain down on your head). I wore a coat, hat and hood to keep the snow and rain off my head and face and no gloves or scarf because I wasn’t otherwise bothered.

    As a NewEnglender, I’m with you. Though we’ve recently got an inflow of soft southerners who wish for no snow all winter long. If you want warm winters, move to Florida. (That said, I’m not going anywhere near your state in the summer, because I’ve heard they’re rather humid. Humidity and I don’t get along.)

  Heh. My grandparents are originally from Minnesota, so most of my extended family still lives there (I grew up and currently live in North Carolina). People around here always ask how the winters are in Minnesota, and I just reply, “Yeah. We don’t go there in the winter.” The summers are lovely though!
  
  My mom is from Cleveland, so we used to go there for Christmas. We got our fill of snow and winter weather for several days and left. LOL.

  I grew up in Boston, lived all around the country, and have ended up in Minnesota, which I love. In fact, we’re a little tired of the wimpy winters here lately, and we want the giant snowdrifts and below zero temps to come back! The seasons here are wonderful. As I’ve told more than one doubter: There is no bad weather — just inappropriate clothing. (Well, of course, you know, except for extreme conditions, i.e. tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.)

North Texas and it was 80 yesterday. It was beautiful. I see pictures like this and I think “they went to the gym in a blizzard? they shut down the town if we get a half inch of snow around here.” (I know it’s not really a blizzard, but it looks like it to my southern eyes.)

  Really? Coyote? that makes me sad. I know that they are considered a nuisance but I think they are beautiful. In Utah, there are a zillion of them. At night, if you are remotely away from the cities, you can hear them. I’m not going to bitch about Fur in General – but I’m a bit surprised she’s wearing real fur, given that there are many who have such strong feelings about it…

    plenty of them where i live here in Western Canada, in fact we see them often in the city, i agree they are lovely, though they do help themselves to the odd fluffy from time to time …i do know that many of the parka makers use coyote fur as trim (Canada Goose brand comes to mind), i wont bitch about fur either, but i will say that here in my arctic like climate fur trim on hoods is becoming much more popular again and the majority of it is definitelty coyote…

OK. An a resident of northern Alberta, Canada, there aren’t a lot of stellar fashion moments in my life. I am not part of the scene. We spend way too much of the year wrapped up and guarding against cold, snow and it’s not uncommon for me to be splattered by mud from inconsiderate drivers when I walk down the sleep. However, my floor length, wool/alpaca black coat, handknit black and white fair isle patterned alpaca scarf, wool/alpaca blend grey beret and practical but not-too-bulky sketchers winter boots look way better than what these two stars are going with. And my walk to the train station this morning was -29C, with a windchill factor of “feels like -41C”. My budget is a helluva lot less than any star, too. This post is making me feel triumphant.

    I’m also in Texas, and whine a lot in the 4th month of 95-105 degree days (with at least another month of hot left to go.) But all it takes is a couple of days somewhere moderately cold and I realize I think the cold is worse. No longer acclimated to it.

Last week it was well below zero around here, and a reporter caught up with a guy walking down the street with a coyote (hat) on his head!! Tail and all. He said it may look silly, but it he was the warmest guy out there!

Really, I would think that if these people aren’t shooting a movie, they’re probably working out 2-3 hours a day, so I can see going through that much water. (I often finish off my 20oz of water during a 45-minute workout.) A couple of the fellas that come to my gym regularly bring (and drink) a gallon bottle every time. The only bad part is when the last part of the workout is rowing and I feel the water sloshing back and forth and back and forth…
