Slap some color on this chickie’s face and she becomes unrecognizable.

Dakota Fanning covers the March 2013 issue of Glamour magazine photographed by Ellen von Unwerth and styled by Anne Christensen.

On what her little sister Elle has taught her: “She’s very uninhibited and will try pretty much anything. Even the way she dresses— she dresses totally for herself. She risks being made fun of…by me, which I sometimes do, because I’m an older sister! But I totally admire her and think she’s very cool.”

On if she’s having fun with the “fashion icon moment” she and sister Elle are having now: “It’s really fun when you’re getting dressed for something. It’s not when you’re in the rain with an umbrella and trying to carry a case of water. Yep, that’s me, alone, coming from Duane Reade. I’m not wearing a bra. Deal with it.”

On if she was surprised when her Marc Jacobs perfume ad was banned in the U.K. in 2011 for being “sexually provocative.” [In the ad Fanning sits on the floor with a large perfume bottle between her legs.]: “Yeah, I was! If you want to read something into a perfume bottle, then I guess you can. But it’s also like, Why are you making it about that, you creep? I love Marc and trust him, and we just laughed about it.”

Y’know, if this was anyone else, we’d say it was a bit Hollywood-standard, but she so needs something bright and colorful layered over her that it really works for her. She looks great. “Hollywood glamour” is about as done as a style concept can get, but sometimes, a gal really just needs to slap on the war paint, blow out the hair, and wear something shimmery.

  Me too! Read it in the 60s when Cheryl Tiegs and Cybill Shephard were the It Girls. But sometime in the 80s they turned into a mini-Cosmo with enless sex articles and lost me.

    I still have a Glamour cookbook, though, with so many of the great recipes they used to have in the magazine. Have made many a great meal from it, too.

I don’t love the Mickey Mouse cropped shirt on the cover. I can decide if it infantilizing a grown woman or exploiting a girl, but either way it’s a little creepy to me. But I really like the photo of her in the polka-dot Nina Ricci dress.

That last picture of her is super awkward. Like very awkward. It’s mostly the mouth that bothers me but I oddly enough don’t hate everything else. It’s definitely different from what you usually see her in but -shrugs- sometimes it is cool to go completely out of left field and be kind of ridiculously covered in maquillage.

good that she’s glammed it up as it made me take notice to her beauty in a totally different way.

for her, its cool, even though it is standard for starlet magazine spreads. and in the end plays to the sort of infantilized stereotypes we’re used to seeing them in (doe eyes, toes pointed toward each other, dresses that look like lingerie, etc)

I love her hair like that and the disco make up. She’s not a great poser though, I’m not too fussed about her looking too grown up, she’s 19 now and I think there are more shocking editorials going around that I can clutch my pearls about.

I think this is less “Hollywood Glamour” and more “Taxi Driver” – which I love! Both of the Fanning sisters tend to dress so they look anemic – both in color and style. This is invigorating by comparison.

This feels very, very ’70s to me. I think it’s mostly the makeup, the shiny lip in particular. Though polka dot dress and the satin lingerie rompers thing with wedge sandals contribute.

      I think it really did filter down to what we saw in middle America – I didn’t know until I was a bit older that it was specifically Biba, but we all wanted that sort of thirties look, the permed hair, the platform shoes, when I was in Jr. high ( in Ohio! ) in the early seventies. I remember buying Butterick patterns for Biba-style skirts and camisoles. Thank god my eyebrows grew back!

Don’t really get the sleaze comments here … Miley Cyrus is younger than Dakota and Miley is showing her tits on the cover of Cosmo. I don’t love the last shot of the Burberry (but then I hate that dress), but I think the rest of the photos are pretty and sexy.

  Miley is showing her tits in a grown up dress, with grown up styling. She’s not being made to look like a younger girl. There’s no wild eyed innocence and mixed messages with Miley. I have no beef with girls of 18 and 19 years old wanting to be sexy, just as long as it’s not while also trying to look underage while doing so. That’s just my humble, mom opinion though.
