Cover Girl: Drew Barrymore for Harper’s Bazaar

Miss Drew’s been away from the spotlight in order to gestate a human, but she’s back, looking fresh and (no doubt due to Photoshop) well-rested in her new role of mommy.

Drew Barrymore covers the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Daniel Jackson.

“When my daughter was born, I thought to myself, ‘How do I go past infinity with my efforts and care?’ I asked my mother-in-law questions. I psycho-stalked all of the nurses with so many questions. I asked every single question. I’m a real stay-at-home mom. I’m really hands-on. Everything else became secondary.”

“For a solid six weeks, I was hiding like the Unabomber. Because I live my life in the public eye, and I didn’t want that for her [daughter] Unless I move into a bunker underground, I don’t have a choice in this matter. It was something that took me weeks to cope with.”

“How do I go past infinity with my efforts and care?” Haven’t we all asked that question, in perhaps a slightly less space-cadet manner, using words that flow more naturally into each other? We look forward to more Drew-osophy, like “Why are people so full of not-nice when they could have purposefulness and bliss times a thousand?” and “When will my baby live in a world so totally beyond a big bowl of love and peace?”

Aw, we joke because we love Miss Drew. She looks cute here – and she can add herself to the long list of ladystars who lined up to wear one of the checked dresses from the LV spring line.

God I love those checked prints!! So why do ladystars make such a giant deal about parenthood? Self-absorbed much? Yes my children are lovely and life changing but I didn’t redefine LOVE or PURPOSE just because they arrived…. geezzzz

  Yeah, I want to give her a pass because she’s cute and been through a lot, but I think what she means by “hands on” is that she was almost completely unhinged because she didn’t know what she was doing as a new mom. And we’ve all been through that. And it doesn’t take so many words to say that.

    That’s the thing – she’s been through a lot, her mother did not, apparently, do the greatest job on her so she wants to be the best mother she can and doesn’t know how. Pretty sweet, I think.

        She’s had a spotty relationship with Jaid, her mother, who’s a bit of a mess. I read that when Drew got married, she spoke to her mother about attending her wedding and ‘they’ decided it would be best if she didn’t. Sad, but true. Well, maybe she’s got a great MIL.

  I don’t have children, but I think it’s part of the cultural narrative for women (still). I think for celebrities, especially, it gets emphasized as they are in the public eye. Can anybody remember any fatherhood interviews?

  Then you’re lucky because some people have no concept of life or love before they have children. And having a child IS a big deal. It’s an enormous responsibility and if you’ve never really been around children, having your own can be very daunting. Some women (not just celebrities) spend their lives focused on themselves and nothing else. It’s all about them til they pop out a kid and then they realize the focal point of their universe no longer revolves around what makes them happy, but what is good for their child. Plus, she has the baggage of having had a shitty mother, I’m sure she’s terrified of fucking up her kid and wants to spare her whatever unhappiness she experienced growing up.
  
  As for the general hilarity of her wording, I’d like to think this is a result of pregnancy brain and not her inability to formulate intelligible sentences.

Always exuberant she looks and sounds happy and 6 weeks after the arrival of the blessed chosen one. Drew sounds like any first timer…she needs other yummy mummy’s who are equally interested in her revelations….probably more suitable for Good Housekeeping.

Ps She knows we know she’s been Photo shopped too – crazy huh.

I find Drew charming and quirkily appealing but she looks a bit too polished here to be believed. Even the dress seems to be chosen to complement the typography and design of the cover more than anything else.

It would have been nice to see a full body shot to get a better sense of the real Drew.

Hmm … I’ve been a first time mother for roughly a month less than she has and I am not spouting such nonsense. People ask me ALL THE TIME how I’m doing. I have 2 standard replies:
1. “I’d rather not say.”
2. “I’m having a little trouble sticking the dismount.”

Maybe I need to call Drew and ask for some advice … or at least some support staff on loan.

  Oh, the early weeks are SO much harder than I was ever led to believe, and I promised myself that I would remember how hard it was in order to be more supportive/sympathetic to new moms, because all I heard from other people during that time was variations of, “Isn’t it wonderful? Aren’t you just so happy?”
  
  Sure I was, but I mostly remember being terrified all the time. I felt like I had no business having this tiny creature entrusted to me and was certain that something bad would happen, and without going into too much boring detail, the sleeplessness, feeding problems, and hormones did not help.
  
  Anyway, I’m just writing this to say that, even though I don’t know precisely what you’re going through, I’m willing to bet that it’s perfectly normal, and it WILL get better.
  
  Also, if you plan on having any more, the second baby is way less terrifying.

    Agreed. The first two weeks are absolutely brutal. People are all, “Just sleep when the baby sleeps.” If you do that you will never eat, poop or shower.

Very pretty in checks. Yeah–I remember spouting platitudes about motherhood and shit…only while pregnant. Once that little alien came into our lives, I was all, “When in the heck does school start?” I jest, but there really was some of that. I’m happy to say my girls grew up to be fairly well-adjusted contributing members of human society in spite of our mistakes as new parents.

I still chuckle when I hear new moms talking about “infinity of caring…”
