Very surprised by the Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow snubs for best director… And I would’ve like to see John Hawkes for Best Actor.

        I would have added him and left off Joaquin Phoenix. I was surprised to see him on there because it seems like these days they tend to skip people who don’t care, won’t show up, and/or disdain the whole process. He’s kind of in that camp.

        I’m kind of actually enraged by it. Which surprises me, since I have been determined not to care. But he’s been doing amazing work for years, as any Deadwood fan can tell you, and I really thought after his nomination a few years ago for Winter’s Bone, he would have been a shoo-in for Best Actor this year based on the Sessions. Gah.

    Directors vote for the best director noms (IIRC the only category that all Academy members vote on is Best Picture). The fact that the director category is so often a mess leads me to suspect that the votes are based in part on either a lot of personal crap or professional differences of opinion about how things ought to be done.

        PREACH IT. I have not seen any episodes of The Newsroom, but I heard Aaron Sorkin’s Fresh Air interview, and my radio almost broke from the skeezy pretentiousness of it all. Every clip they played I had to like yell at the radio. OH YOU’RE A REPUBLICAN BUT BELIEVE IN GLOBAL WARMING HOW PRECIOUS. Sorry for the all caps, but Aaron Sorkin is determined to piss away all the goodwill from The West Wing.

        I enjoyed Sports Night but couldn’t really get enthused about anything else from him. Too superior and preachy (show, don’t tell, Aaron; it’s Theater 101), even though we actually share most of the same political views. I do know quite a few “civilians” who love The Newsroom, though.

        And they can think on their feet much better than many actors. They’ve usually had experience with being heckled and hence they’re quick with the ideas, or good at reacting to something that happens spontaneously (such as during an acceptance speech).

I have to say I didn’t really like Beasts of the Southern Wild … can’t put my finger on the reason. The young girl in the lead role was great though.

Loved Amour, glad it is getting recognition!. A touching film without prentiousness and on a subject that affects us all but is not touched upon enough: aging.

  I saw it also. From all the glowing reviews, I thought it would be great. I thought it was a boring story, not well put together, and ameturish acting. Maybe the nominators just read reviews and didn’t actually see the movie.

  Acting-wise, I thought that only Jude Law was deserving of awards consideration. But that is a loaded category this year, and he was in a movie that got mediocre reviews, so he really didn’t stand a chance. I am pulling for Arkin.

        I remember seeing a still from Django Unchained where Leo smashed some glass in his hand until it was bleeding. He never broke character and it was really dramatic so Tarantino left it in. One of the comments was, “He really wants that Oscar. I think they should give it to him before he murders someone on camera.”

So are we agreed “Lincoln”‘s going to take home the big prize? It’s the only one of the the BP nominees where the director is also nominated that looks like a legitimate contender to me. Thoughts?

  I think it’ll sweep the actor nominations, with the exception of Sally Field, because then Anne Hathaway will do a full rugby tackle on her. It’ll also take the screenplay, because come on, TONY KUSHNER. I’m not so sure about the director and best picture categories.

    You’re right about the screenplay, definitely. For picture, I tend to discount almost immediately all the ones where the director isn’t also nominated, because for most of Hollywood the two go together. So that leaves “Amour” which will probably win Foreign Film instead, “Beasts…” which will take home the “It’s An Honor Just to be Nominated” award (although the fact that it wasn’t nominated for Sound baffles me), “Silver Linings” which strikes me as being a bit too slight for the Academy, and “Life of Pi” which is a possible spoiler, but given the choice between a fantastical allegory and a hagiography of one of the greatest presidents ever, as directed by the king of Hollywood?
    
    I could be wrong, they’ve split the Picture/Director prize often enough before, but this is my gut feeling.

      But the academy loves Ang Lee too. I feel like this is not going to be a cut-and-dry twice-winner in here. Either Lee takes director and Lincoln takes movie (the likely outcome), or the other way around. Lincoln had the advantage of not only a great screenwriter (Kushner), but also great source material (Kearns-Goodwin). Life Of Pi was considered unadaptable for screen until Ang Lee blew the doors off with it.

        I am going for the total surprise in Silver Linings — sort of a Crash moment (and god did I hate that movie). I loved Django, so it has my hopes, but not my ballot pick. The fact that Silver Linings received a director nod too? That is my guess… I am just excited to Oscar party!

  But what do I know. If it were up to me I’d give it to Django Unchained, Life of Pi, or perhaps Beasts of the Southern Wild.

  It’s 1998 all over again – a Harvey Weinstein comedy will win best pic and Spielberg will take director as consolation. Harvey’s ingenue (Lawrence/Paltrow) takes actress over more deserving serious actress (Chastain/Blanchett) and foreign veteran (Riva/Montenegro).
  At least there isn’t an annoying Italian clown to steal Daniel’s actor trophy…

    1998 is one of the years I’m most mad about in Oscar history (topped only by Denzel not winning in 1992), If a similar scenario goes down this year I will revolt.

      I appear to be one of the few who’s not mad about that: I think the Academy made the right choice. “Saving Private Ryan” is a technical marvel, but I have yet to stay awake all the way through it: it’s your standard-issue war film when you separate it from the amazing visuals. “Shakespeare in Love” wasn’t anywhere near the same kind of technical feat to pull off, but it took the best-known romance in the English language and made something fresh out of it.

        I am also completely okay with that decision. Saving Private Ryan is standard stuff outside of the first twenty minutes, but Shakespeare is Love somehow feels completely fresh. Plus, it features a good performance from Joseph Fiennes, which is like the acting equivalent of Halley’s Comet.

        I regard Shakespeare in Love as a really fancy rom-com. It was an entertaining and very good movie, but best of the year… I don’t see that.
        
        What about Elizabeth? I believe that was from the same year and an overall better film. Never saw Thin Red Line.

        If you ever get a chance, see The Thin Red Line. Gorgeously filmed, very cerebral and intricate, as different a war film from Saving Private Ryan as is possible. The cinematography will blow you away. I’m not really a fan of war films, although I liked much of Saving Private Ryan, but The Thin Red Line and Apocalypse Now (very different of course from TTRL) stand to me as the best war films ever.

        My FIL was in some of the actual battles depicted in thin red line and he said that it had a very accurate depiction of some of the experience. I thought the cinemotography was brilliant but didn’t overall love the movie.

        I really didn’t think either movie deserved it. Saving Private Ryan deserved plenty of Oscars — for its cast, who were all brilliant. But Best Picture? I just didn’t find it that remarkable; I’ve seen better war movies.

        I’m with you, “Shakespeare in Love” was one of those magical films where everything works just right – casting, script, costumes, score – and so the whole was much greater than the sum of its parts. Every time I watch it, I’m transported. Meanwhile I’m glad that I saw “Saving Private Ryan,” but I never need to see it again.

        Disagree, actually. Avatar was a huge blockbuster with state-of-the-art visuals… and a story that could have been written by a 12-year-old. IIRC it didn’t get a single non-technical nom besides Picture & Director. Hurt Locker was the first movie about the current war(s) that got people talking, because it approached it in a sideways direction, and was anchored by a great performance. Plus I think the opportunity to tell James “I’m the King of the World!” Cameron to stuff it by giving the awards to his ex-wife was too sweet to pass up for some folks. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Avatar had won, but I had Hurt Locker on my ballot.

        Well, Avatar had its problems, but the combined power of it having the most nominations and being the highest grossing movie of all time made it seem like a near sure thing. When those two things happen simultaneously, it’s hard to beat.

Pleasantly surprised at the Beasts of the Southern Wild love. It was a magical film.

Don’t get the Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty hype. They’re both average-to-good films bolstered by subject matter and (in Lincoln’s case especially) the performances.

I’m starting my third attempt at the “Oscars Death Race”: seeing every film nominated in every category. Looks like there are 53 nominees this year.

I am very surprised at the snub for Ben Affleck. That movie was very well made.

  I’m reading this just after seeing Les Mis. I haven’t seen all the other nominees for best supporting actress, but if Hathaway wins it’s a travesty. (I’m not sure it’s 100% her fault, as a whole that movie couldn’t decide whether to be cinematic or operatic in tone). She just wasn’t that great an actress – you could see her working hard at it, if that makes sense.

Or maybe it was my growing frustration that Crowe started out all appropriately broody but never (for me, anyway) conveyed anywhere near the depth of tortured emotion that was supposed to be driving his character.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m kind of miffed that Moonrise Kingdom got passed over for Production Design. Say what you will about Anderson’s choices as a director or screenwriter, but his movies are always so visually rich this felt kind of like a snub. I also thought Moonrise deserved one for Costume Design for the Bird masks alone, but in a year with so many costume epics, that was unlikely to happen, I guess. I’m just going to be happy that Wreck-It-Ralph and Argo got nominations, and Skyfall got one for Cinematography, which it so richly deserved.

I haven’t even seen most of the Visual Effects noms and as a certified nerd girl, that is almost unheard of. Looper didn’t get ANY nominations and that was probably my favorite movie of the last year.

        I don’t think her performance at the Oscars affected her all that much. People talk about it but most have forgiven her because it was clear she was trying. It’s Franco that people can’t stand. Plus this is her second Oscar nomination. The academy won’t have forgotten that. I think the reason the media’s been all over her is because she also got raves for the Batman movie last summer. However you look at it 2012 was a really good year for her. I don’t blame her for taking advantage of it. To me it’s no worse than seeing Emma Stone all the time (especially on this site). I really grew tired of her (even though I do like her as an actress) and she wasn’t even up for anything.

It might just be me, but I’m reaaaaallly hoping for a Hathaway snub. Mostly because a) I hate it when the winners are pretty much a lock weeks before the actual ceremony and b) Amy Adams was superb in The Master. I really liked DDL’s performance and want him to win all the things ever (still not over Last of the Mohicans) but Joaquin Phoenix was transformative in The Master.

    I would tend to agree with you, but I saw it last weekend and was really impressed. I’ve seen the staged musical a couple of times and…I actually liked the movie better.
    
    There were some bits I was looking forward to that I thought might not make it in, but the movie pays homage to the “traditional” staging in so many ways, even relatively minor things like Enjolras with the flag (if you have seen the stage version, you know what I mean; I don’t want to spoil the effect for people who aren’t as familiar with it).
    
    The main reason I liked it better is that using film allows for much better continuity in the story. On stage the story definitely gets broken up by the scene changes, and certain bits of the plot have to be implied or imagined rather than shown (e.g. how characters get from one place to another). The luxury of film and editing is that the camera can pan over a scene during an 8-bar musical introduction to give a sense of what is happening before cutting to the musical number. I thought it very effective.

      I just think it’s sad that many in the industry can’t just appreciate a movie for its artistic merit without going on about how they are “hearing Oscar beeells!” This is particularly frustrating in a movie like this where there is so much to talk about with regards to acting and singing performances.
      
      There is nothing wrong with liking it; I like the Phantom of the Opera movie better than what I have gleaned of the stage performances. I can’t stand Sarah Brightman’s Christine.

      I think he should have been nominated as a director, but not as an actor. It seems like what often happens in Hollywood is that a studio won’t sign on (and money won’t be raised) unless there is a “name” actor in the/a lead, especially if it’s a small drama. Other than Arkin, Goodman, and possibly Garber (all of whom were supporting), most of that cast were unknowns or very-little-knowns, which I LOVED. I can easily see the powers-that-be saying, “We will only green-light this project if you agree to be in it.”
      
      Is this an excuse not to cast race- or size- or age-inappropriate actors? Absolutely not. But I think it’s a widespread Hollywood problem.

I haven’t found Anne Hathaway’s pimping for the Oscar annoying at all. She wants to win and it’s part of her job to campaign her ass off, and that’s what she’s done. I find her openness refreshing. What irritates me is the Michelle Williams-type response. “I was so busy with my daughter and running late as usual because I’m an ordinary hands-on mom, then I went to my best friend’s house blah blah blah. I forgot all about it”. Yeah, right.

Wilkinson sings the “bring it down” song to perfection, and it’s “interesting” to see how differently how the two sing falsetto. Jackman has a very, very limited range, from the few videos I have seen. He just seems to do the boring recitativo in all of them, which is exactly what makes me jaded towards musicals in general.

Jackson’s portrayal was so nuanced that he transcended that stereotype and made the character so insidious and sinister almost. He was Django’s real obstacle, not Candie (DiCaprio).

  I wonder if Jackson isn’t getting noms because he plays angry mofo in almost every role he’s been in (Except Star Wars, where he was just, well, nothing spectacular at all, really.) Being typecast to act a certain way doesn’t harm every actor, because when you see Morgan Freeman, you kinda expect a calm, introspective demeanor to his roles, and he’s won.

Les Mis was three hours of overwrought torture that I want back, damn you! But much as I hated it, Hugh Jackman never looked lovelier and Anne Hathaway earned her nod for Best Supporting Actress. Of course, this year’s Best Actor Oscar belongs to Daniel Day Lewis!

I don’t understand why L’Amour is not under the Best Foreign Film category. My guess is that anything Lincoln gets nominated for, it’ll win. Best Supporting may go to the ever present Anne Hathaway. The way the Academy seems to work, aside from the talent she brought to Fantine, the voters may well decide it’s a good way to say thank you for having hosted against Franco. And perhaps encourage her to settle down for a bit. I find her irritating beyond belief but she was terrific in Brokeback and Rachel Getting Married.

I would be delighted to see Naomi Watts take it for Best Actress but not holding my breath.

The exclusion of David Straithern is too bad. He was amazing in Lincoln.

Other than a Best Director winner also getting a trophy if his/her film wins Best Picture, nowhere else in Oscarville can something be nominated for the same thing twice. For instance, had Affleck been nominated twice, it would still have been for two different jobs/roles: actor and director.

      Not true; since the creation of the Best Animated Feature category, there have been two animated films nominated in both that category and the Best Picture category.
      
      But in any case, I can’t get all worked up “every time” about the double nomination, since this is only the fifth time it’s happened in the sixty-five-year history of the foreign-language award, and none of them have ever won the top prize. Foreign-language films are at such an unbelievable disadvantage when it comes to getting any recognition from the Academy in any category (after all, there’s a single category with five nominees that’s meant to represent the whole of world cinema every year, so it’s not like that’s exactly an easy nomination to get) that I’m frankly thrilled when one makes it into Best Picture. If a double nomination ends up happening once every fifteen years on average, that’s a small price to pay for the Academy finally thinking outside the boundaries of Hollywood productions.

        I want to say that I’ve heard the reason “Molly” isn’t on DVD has to do with the musical rights involved, but don’t hold me to that. I just *wish* they would resolve it, because honestly, I think it was one of the best (top ten) television shows of all time. Her mother was hands-down the best depiction of a mother I’ve ever seen, big or small screen.

I have a little catching up to do. I probably won’t see Zero Dark Thirty or Django Unchained. Life has been too stressful and I need more uplifting entertainment fare these days. No real shockers added or left off these lists, though, right?

  I wouldn’t write off Django Unchained, it isn’t exactly a bleak film. Or at least not in the same way that Zero Dark Thirty is. There are some really horrible bits dealing with the reality of slavery but I just shut my eyes during those parts. Other than that there are a lot of comedic and – dare I say, uplifting? – moments. Put it this way, the theater I was in burst into applause as soon as it was done. It’s a Tarantino flick, so if you have trouble with blood and language then skip it.
  
  It’s just now hitting me what a strange mix of genres it was. The tone shifted so rapidly and somehow it worked.

    Thanks. I actually like Tarantino, mostly. I’ll see it at some point, but probably on DVD. After seeing Lincoln, Argo, and Les Miserables, I’m kind of up for a little unfettered fun.

So far, everything I’ve heard or read about Django (including Tarantino’s interview with Terry Gross) has led me to believe that it’s too violent for me, without a leavening, or even partially leavening, resolution. I DO have trouble with not blood, but violence, threatened and implied as much as shown, and particularly sadistic violence. But your comments give me reason to think seeing it might be a net plus.

  You know what else was overpraised? Silver Linings Playbook. I actively hated that movie. It’s a nonsensical rom-com masquerading as serious by tacking on mental health problems for the main characters. Jennifer Lawrence is brilliant in it, but the other three actors didn’t deserve nominations. And screenplay and director? Puh-leaze.

Ben Affleck & Kathryn Bigelow got shafted…and not in a good way. Hopefully Lincoln won’t take everything. Zero Dark Thirty & Flight were two of the best pictures I’ve seen all year.

It’s a really good list of nominees. My only quibble: excessive nominations for Life of PI, for which the hype was bigger than the product. I looked forward to this movie, but was disappointed in a big way. It was boring, and pretentious. And 3-D didn’t fill the void.

I’m surprised that Beasts, a strange and captivating little movie, did as well as it did. It shows a shift among Academy members to recognize and include low-budget, independent, off-beat films in the mix.

I’m also surprised by the nominations of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, and others for SLP. Not displeased, just surprised.

I’m looking forward to the show this year. Anything would be better than James Franco and Anne Hathaway (I still shudder).

Agree about the performances in Lincoln- not sure if Tommy lee Jones actually deserves the nom though… did not really connect with his performance. Ben Affleck should have received a nom – he did an amazing job of keeping the tension throughout the film.

  I don’t think Hathaway’s on screen enough for lead. There are no real female leads in the film. It’s really about the moral dilemmas played out between Jackman and Crowe’s characters, pretty much every thing else is a series of engaging subplots.

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD has all my votes, like HUGO did last year.

Who else did NOT like Moonrise Kingdom? Over-the-top self indulgence on the director’s part, I thought. It was like watching a runway show of his favorite shots. Not a good or interesting or well told story. Only Frances McDormand’s part was interseting at all or well-played. There was nothing in that part for Ed Norton. Bill Murray is like just another flower on the repetitive wallpaper that is Wes Anderson’s films these days.
