Michael Kors Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

Taking his inspiration from “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’s” Maggie, Michael Kors went off on a sexy, sugar-and-spice ’50s tangent for his pre-fall 2013 collection, offering up pretty, retro-inspired prints and silhouettes with a cool, edgy vibe to them, in a range of materials from lace to leather. Southern belle, bobby-soxer, rock-and-roll chick, and Hitchcock femme are all here, full of attitude and color, with a modern twist that takes everything away from looking like a costume.

I would have pinned this collection on Marc Jacobs, not the dutchess! I don’t think I would wear any of it other than the black gown on the bottom-most left… the rest strikes me as a little dowdy.

Are we sure this isn’t Marc Jacobs? Can’t stand the hair, really distracting. Noting really “wow” but it’s mostly nice. The industrial zipper on the front of that leather pencil skirt is killing me though… Eyes right to the crotch!

Well that’s certainly a mixed bag. Surprisingly I love the pink suit, the black dress and wrap, and especially the black dress with the asymmetrical collar; but the floral patterns hurt my feelings.

Being of a certain age I wonder if they’re not too costume-y for me?

Some pretty things, and some that look very Barbie doll. The model’s plastic poses with look alike hair, glasses and stance help
create the ‘doll’ on the shelf look. I dislike most of the prints; but I especially like the pink fur stole outfit, 3rd row. The first
model with the peplum in the 7th row. And I like the idea of elegant cropped pants, although thats not really a new idea.

Some of these are nice (e.g. 1st row, 2nd look; 3rd row, 1st look; and 3rd-to-last row, 3rd look), but the color palette is killing me.

I don’t mind most of the clothes, but the styling really leaves something to be desired! That one lank strand of hair, the atrocious fake (?) fur stole … plus, nearly everything in the black and red flowered fabric is so boxy, and that baby poo green is a color very few women can wear (and perhaps even fewer WANT to wear it!)

Love the way the tweed and leather are deployed in this collection. And the bottom row 1st look is gorgeous — are those separates, or is it a gown? Either way, it reminds me of Lena Headey’s Emmy dress last year. God, I loved that look.

  Or wrap a belt around two layers of faux fur at that. According to my late ex-MIL, the proper way to wear a stole was to gracefully shrug it off at the first opportunity and drape it over the back of one’s chair so that the furrier’s label could be seen. Fumbling to unbuckle a belt would have screwed up the gracefully shrugging it off part.

    I don’t hate the whole 60s: I am uncomfortably fond of Mod fashions (though I wholly and completely understand why many people aren’t, since they are flattering only on a very narrow part of the population – and that both is and is not a pun).
    
    I do, however, hate the late-50s-though-early-60s era in fashion. For a variety of reasons.
    
    Partly, my dislike is personal association: the whole retro-, “vintage” trend, of which (with the 40s) that era is a major focus, is popular with a particular segment of the hipster population who make me particularly sad. Quirky vintage girl is quirky vintage girl because she doesn’t know who she is – and adopting that persona is an easy shortcut, at least for a while. So, on that level, it has negative associations for me.
    
    Partly, my dislike is political – which is probably a sad-to-horrifying admission for many who would prefer to appreciate fashion in itself (which it can be, on a personal level, with varying degrees of burying your head in the sand). Fashions are products of the cultures which made them – and appropriating design ideals as vintage trends does not, and cannot, neatly divorce them from the context which gave birth to them. It might seem like a harmless little thing, but there are no big things, only aggregates of little things. Intentionally or not, “ironically” or not, as a social act, vintage clothing and inspirations contain within them the ideal of womanhood and society that created them (I note several people have commented on the Barbie-ness of much of this collection). And given that a significant percentage of the population thinks society was genuinely better then, and likewise given that people’s actions and choices can be used in ways they never intended – this does not comfort me. Especially as I already fear for the future. For those reasons, any pre-Civil Rights Era cultural nostalgia makes me extremely uneasy.
    
    Mostly, though, I just think clothes of that era are ugly. I think the cuts are unattractive, that the colors are frequently garish or at least unappealing, and that they tend to be stiff, heavy, and uncomfortable looking.
