This just in: Doctor Who star Matt Smith continues to have great hair:

‘Dr. Who’ stars Matt Smith greets fans while arriving together to the BBC Radio 1 Studios in London.

He also continues to be a nerdily adorable hipster.

Love the outfit, Matt. Insanely jealous of the hair.

NERDSPEAK: So… Doctor Who Christmas Special, yes?

New companion, yes? Discuss. Will the Pond-o-philes be able to move on and accept the change? We will, of course, have thoughts after it airs.

Please, never stop featuring Matt Smith on this blog. That coat and scarf are a KILLER combination. He’s one of the few people who can really pull off the hipster look without seeming like a douche.

Whoever plays the Twelfth Doctor is going to need to have hair beyond belief to follow up on DT and Matt.

        You get a couple of growls here and there. I actually liked that they didn’t show us a complete picture of Smaug; it kept him mysterious and more frightening, like a force of nature instead of an animal or personality.

  Matt Smith could not be less my type (I have had crushes on way more than my share of skinny white boys, but I generally pick nerds over hipsters), but I love him, love his style, love the whole thing. I have tried to figure how much of that is him, and how much is the fact that he is the Doctor. The results thus far are inconclusive…

I wonder if they’re going to make her a different character or find some way to explain how she’s there (i.e. Doctor Who goes back in time to save her, etc.).

  It’s a completely different character, named Clara. And what I find to be most interesting (I read this somewhere else on the tubes) – while we all know that Clara and Oswin are the same actress but not the same character, the Doctor never saw Oswin, so he doesn’t know. NO idea how that will tie in, but just a fun fact.

    I think it’s going to undo what Oswald did in the opening episode of the season. Which needs to be undone anyways – the Daleks not having a giant fear of something frightens me.

        Oh, I know. So was Freema, and Karen had a bit part in an RTD ep before getting cast in Moffat’s era. Freema’s was explained as Martha having a cousin who’d worked at Torchwood Canary Wharf, Eve’s was similar I think in terms of being a long distant ancestor. Suspect Clara/Oswin connection could be more complex, or non-existent.

        No way it’s coincidence. In all those cases, the actors were brought back a while later, after having made a good impression. (I suppose the closest would be Freema Agyeman? But the tiny bit of retconning ["oh, I had a cousin"] they did doesn’t speak to any planning, just a quick fix.) She was announced as the new companion before that first episode even aired. It would be only a few months between her first appearance and her first appearance as a companion. This was definitely planned.

So. . . I have a question. Why is it that Matt Smith comes down so clearly in the “nerdily adorable hipster” territory, and not in the “douchily aggravating hipster” province? I agree with y’all whole-heartedly that he’s a citizen of the former territory, but I’m damned if I know what the difference between him and all the annoying Williamsburg hipsters is.

    Eh, I’m not so sure about the accent. There are plenty of British douche bag hipsters, plenty.
    I do agree about his grooming – clearly superior, and I think he just knows who he is and instinctively knows how to dress himself. I don’t get a douche vibe from him at all.

    Exactly. I get the same vibe from Daniel Day-Lewis. If DDL were, say, an accountant instead of an actor, I get the distinct impression that he would still be wearing the scarves and the wide collars and the loafers. He just really, really likes dressing that way, and it suits him perfectly. Same deal with Matt Smith.

  A) He’s kempt and obviously putting in effort, as opposed to looking like he’s pretending he’s not trying.
  B) It’s sincere. There’s no urge to fit in with the other hipsters — when they’ve all moved on to some other style, Matt Smith will still be dressing like Matt Smith.

  He’s just so wonderfully, adorably childlike. Not child-ish. But he’s got this sense of innocence to him (I guess that comes with him playing a children’s show lead) that makes it work for me.

  He appears to have a sense of humor. The WORST thing about hipsters is how overly seriously they take themselves (and how hard they work at their hipsterdom- as if they’re the first people to ever discover a counter-culture). He makes it seem effortless, always appears to be really gracious, and is hilarious as the Doctor in a way that often pokes fun at his own dignity or lack thereof. he is like the anti-hipster outside of his wardrobe.

    Not taking himself too seriously and there is an authenticity about it. Clearly it takes some effort to get dressed like that (it takes effort to put on any combination of clothes) but he makes it look effortless.

I’m going to miss Rory but I never really liked Amy so I’m giddy for a new Companion.

As for the Christmas special, who doesn’t love the idea of dangerous snowmen? (I can’t see the trailer without thinking of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons.) Richard Grant will make a most excellent villain!

Good riddance to the Ponds, I say! I’m really very fond of Rory’s character, but Amy is borderline abusive to him and their relationship always made me uncomfortable. Bring back Donna!

    I love how there was no romance with Doctor Donna. Just a really cute and genuine friendship. That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy Rose and Ten 2.0 getting together finally, but I just really liked how romance wasn’t the basis for their relationship. Plus, Donna was funny as all get out.

  Blasphemy! How could anyone not like Amy?!? She had great hair and was awesome. The scene where she left Madame Kovarian to die? Amazingly great. And she wasn’t abusive to Rory — that was their relationship dynamic, one they were BOTH clearly comfortable with, and it was obvious how devoted they BOTH were. HE was the one she trusted to save her and her baby, she left him so he could have the life he wanted, and then she gave up her entire life to go back in time with him. And at the last, after decades away from her, Rory on his deathbed wasn’t going “thank God, they’re going to save me,” but “thank God, I can see her one last time.”

  I used to haaaaaate her because she was so unfinished. Outside of having a ladyboner for the Doctor and treating Rory like crap there didn’t seem to be much to her (other than lots of miniskirts). In the wake of fantastic female characters like Donna, the weakness and lack of dimension pissed me off- a lot. This last season was a bit better- her sorrow over River, her focus on her own life, the discovery that she had an actual career- all made her more interesting and three-dimensional.
  
  It was just too little too late.

The Ponds were fine (Rory especially), but my favorite–and the most underrated–companion was Martha Jones. I like Matt Smith–and the boy does have some fabulous hair–but in re-watching the reboot, I really miss David Tennant.

  I adored Ten & David but Matt’s my favorite Doctor. I have a “Love the Doc You’re With” history with the series (with exceptions) but something about Matt’s Doctor and the less overall angst-fest that is his tenure really works for me.
  
  Love all the companions, though Rose the least (her fandom is nauseating and unfortunately that’s rubbed off on my feelings about her).

What bugged me is how she also had the most horrific storylines, i.e. what happened to her family, how many times she was kidnapped, hurt, etc… O_o Kinda bummed she just got one season and hope she comes back for a bit, maybe on Torchwood at least?

    I have a love/hate relationship with Amy. Her tendency to snark often came across as abrasive and ungrateful, but she had moments when I really did like her. And most of those moments revolved around Rory. I honestly think the best thing about Amy being the Doctor’s companion was that we all got Rory.

I’ll miss Rory more than Amy. Amy was very “real” because she had unlikeable (to me) moments when she was too verbally rude – childish almost – to others and/or too oblivious of Rory – which is how real people act, so it was great for the character. Donna was sometimes loud and annoying but was waay more likeable, and so far my favorite companion.

I’m open to the new, however.
