He’s definitely built for fashion editorials, and has the quirky good looks that take interesting pictures, but good lord, can this boy not model. These pics aren’t bad, exactly; in fact, they’re probably some of his best attempts at Blue Steel. But even so, the dorkiness can’t hep but rear its dorky head.

Okay, that last turn of phrase was questionable, so let’s get to the pics.

Eddie Redmayne is featured in the January 2013 issue of Esquire UK magazine photographed by Tom Craig and styled by Catherine Hayward.

All he needs is good lighting, fabulous clothes, and a photographer willing to say, “Don’t do that, Eddie. Don’t do that, either.”

Ugh.

I don’t get it. I guess acting and modeling are really different skill sets. But one would think there would be more overlap. He is a quite a good actor. He was downright smoldering in “Birdsong.”

  People who aren’t professional models need good direction. I think fashion photographers are spoiled by people who are used to posing. Unless you get your picture taken regularly, it’s really hard to figure out what you’re doing in front of the camera and vary your poses. (I do family portraiture, and it takes a lot of direction for some of my clients to not have just a frozen smile!)

I love dorks of this particular gangly stripe, so I hope he never finds the photog who can turn him into a Calvin Klein model. Love the styling and the vintage recording studio set. The composition of the shots is disappointingly obvious for having a model who can create some interesting shapes with his body.

  YES. I say this in a not-particularly-sexual way (although my feelings for him run in a quite FWOAR-ward direction), but his body is fantastic, all angles and sinews and lines, and it is such a waste to cover all that up and shoot him mostly in closeup.
  
  He just looks empty in fashion shoots. Not blank in that CK-model way, just poured-out empty, in stark contrast to his tremulous-with-emotion acting.

Dorky is as dorky does.
I want to like him, but he reminds me, too much, of a mean kid I knew in school who cried to the teacher when I fought back.

I think I like the texture/pattern in the fabric of the coat in shot #7…if it’s an overcoat and not a dress coat.

The featured photo struck me that he resembled the handsome Christopher Connelly from the old Peyton Place TV series, but then his hair is just too weird to make the comparison.

I hate his hair so much. I just hate it. I am completely distracted by it. I am sure he is a perfectly cute boy but all I see is that hair brushed forward and I’m thinking, ‘well, good evening to you Emperor Bonaparte.’

I think he’s a yawn, and his lips always look like they need chapstick. When I read about the casting for Lez Mis, I thought he was the weak link as Marius.

Like him in profile, less so face-on: his facial expression is a little dead or frozen looking. Black and white shot is interesting though. Also, bi-polar hair needs lithium.

Let’s blame Tom B and Catherine H for these awkward looking photos. It appears they were going for something that was not in his wheelhouse… which is fairly large, given his range on film and in Burberry ads. Too bad… he’s built to do justice to those clothes.

Ran smack dap into him this afternoon in Barneys mens shoe dept in Beverly Hills…was struck by how gaunt he looked. He’s very tall…6’1″ at least and VERY slim. His face is quite ashen . Regardless, he’s extremly handsome in his own unique way. We don’t need anymore of the body /face perfection on the screen! He’ll do!

  I sure hope his mom doesn’t read our comments. He’s certainly guilty of bad hair choices and limited modeling skills, but I’m pretty sure people who care about him would disagree that he’s inherently defective.

The jacket in the third picture is KILLER.

And I’ll stand up for his quirky hair… I like it generally in theory, anyway. And I really like how it looks in the next-to-last shot, even if I’m the only one!

I think the problem lies with the editorial team in charge of the shoot. No one had the guts to speak up and say ‘do this, don’t do that’. The clothes look great, but his face looks so empty, like he has the IQ of a tea cup…….shame really, ’cause this could’ve been amazing…**sigh**
