It takes a special skill to turn a little black dress from Dolce & Gabbana into something so sickly-sweet it’ll give you a toothache.

Dianna Agron attends the 2012 Ripple Of Hope Gala in New York City in a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and Fred Leighton jewelry.

We realize that demure and ladylike is her thing, but … too much, Miss Dianna. Too damn much. Either the headband OR the shoes, but not both, dear.

Actually, you know what? Just ditch the headband. And change your lipstick color to something a little less “old lady.”

    This is true BUT every time I go into Alice’s Teacup (restaurant in NYC with some of the best scones and tea in the city) for brunch, I still have to argue myself out of buying a pair of their fairy wings, at $50 a pop. And I’m 33. Some looks are harder to let go of than others…

      I just don’t get the fairy princess fascination. Even if I liked that sort of thing, I would be more likely to decorate a room than prance about in them like a four year old. Even though I like wedding shows, I hate the brides who say they want to look like a princess on their wedding. I get different strokes and all, but this one almost offends for some reason.

        I’m not sure how to explain it, but this is my take: I am not particularly girly, but there is something in me that responds, quite directly, to beautiful things (one of the reasons I love this site- I think there are a lot of people like that here). Those wings and that whole pretty princess look are their own very specific form of beauty. I will agree with you that there is a whole passel of problematic social norms that CAN walk hand in hand with that particular look the obsession with purity- female sexual purity specifically, the obsession with blue-eyed blonde fragility, the insistence on a specific brand of femininity that is more about being rescued than being strong- basically everything that is Disney.
        
        Taylor Swift seems completely devoted to casting herself in line with all of those problematic pretty Princess connotations. It’s who she presents herself to be- and I really can’t stand her in large part because of that. It turns me right off. But for every Taylor Swift you can also have a Dita- fucking fabulous in every way, wearing beautiful things and 100% celebrating her femininity, but I never look at her and forget that she is also a smart woman and a force to be reckoned with. I think the key is to bring your brain with you- as long as you do that you can rock pretty much anything. Including wings (yep, totally buying them).

        That’s pretty close. As a matter off personal choice pretty fairy princess is never gonna be something I strive for, but as a fashion choice Taylor is a great example of a more successful interpretation of the look. Part of why Diana’s fails is because the headband is too literal and the dress misses demure and lands straight on geriatric. I like pretty, there are even days when I may like a more delicate styled dress, but primarily, I am primary colors. Wrap dresses and garments with a bit of structure. I can’t imagine ever looking at fairy wings and finding them anything but costume-y.

        I do not do pretty princess myself in normal life- in the battle between makeup and complicated hair vs. more sleep sleep will always win, and clothes-wise I tend to be pretty diverse- pastels, jewel tones, black and white w red accents- it all depends on how I feel.
        
        The wings are going to be on hand for Halloween, Comic-Con and Sundays where I am either babysitting or simply feel like wearing my damn wings. Possibly also at parties. ETA: I am going to have to think through a way to pull them into my outfit for Santa-con this year. The opportunity to do a Santa or elf variation with the wings is too good to pass up.

      Granted it is indeed fun to be absurd, I am fairly certain that is not what is happening here. Dianna is not Gaga or Nicki Minaj or Katy Perry who would actually try a princess fairy look on the RC. This as an attempt at fashion that failed.

I don’t mind the lipstick. It is bright but not the obvious red most women would go for (or that hideous fleshy nude color). Ditch the headband and hairstyle and wear some funkier shoes, and she might be in business. I think the little girl bangs + headband are really sending this into twee overload.

I dislike this whole D&G line, I think the clothing should have stayed in the ads where they were celebrating the so-called Italian life. I haven’t seen anyone wearing these “creations” who looks good while doing so. Therefore, I don’t care that the headband is wrong and the lipstick is tragic and the shoes are just too much–although they ARE getting quite a lot of exposure this season.

I realize all clothing is costume to a certain extent but this collection takes the cake. I just don’t think it’s flattering on anyone at all, not even the runway models or the folks in the print ads. Here’s the back story. Her beloved grannie is very craftsy and always participates in the annual church Christmas bazaar. This year her specialty is bejeweled headbands, so of course Dianna bought one and promised to wear it at an upcoming red carpet event. (She doesn’t like to disappoint her favorite relative.)

The shoes are wrong for the dress obviously, but I think this look could almost work (even with the shoes) if she did something else with her head entirely. It would look better with tousled wavy hair and a different lipstick. I don’t think this shade complements her peachy blush.
