Cover Girl: Jessica Chastain for W Magazine

Jessica Chastain graces the several covers of the January 2013 issue of W magazine and she apparently provided a perfect blank canvas in order for the stylists to have a little fun.

She makes a good choice for an “Art Meets Fashion” theme, since she tends to do better in pictures the weirder the styling and themes get. We love that first cover and the third one makes us laugh. We hope that was the intent, because she looks a little ridic.

Her talent and willingness to take chances – coupled with her look – could mean she stands a very good chance of sustained success remaining relevant in an industry known for discarding people just because they grow older.

She shows here a range for classic “model” beauty out to unconventionally lovely and including a bit of absurdity in the 3rd cover.

  I think coming into the limelight when she is over 30 also gives her a bit more of a shot at longevity. Is that firt picture homage to that Bette Midler album cover, do you think?

Check out the amazing work of photographer Rineke Dijkstra (second photo)! She’s made a really nice series of teenagers in swimwear on the beach – capturing the awkwardness of puberty. Type in her name in google images and you’ll find them!

I love them all. The painted ones are clever and different, the coppery one is bold and funky, and… while I think her face looks beautiful in the 2nd one, that slouchy dress makes her look like she just hopped out of the shower.

All of these covers are awesome! I love both the Dijkstra and Thomas ones (2 & 3) especially. I am fascinated that W had 3/4 of the covers done by female artists that don’t have a name outside the art world. I am interested why people like the first one the best… I really don’t see much of Condo in that piece. It’s almost like he had something else planned, W rejected it, and they had some stylists help him. I could tell almost immediately who the other artists were just by looking at their images (granted I also know who these artists are and their work).

That first cover is so good I just can’t stop looking at it. It’s everything. It definitely opened my eyes to how boring 98 % of the magazine covers are – and how little it takes to make them more interesting. They can still keep the whole pretty woman in pretty dress with pretty hair and makeup thing, just add a little touch of art and originality please!

The first one is fan-damn-tastic. The others are a little head scratching, but still it’s something different. I am actually coming around to number two – I love the simplicity an plainness of her face. Very Sissy Spacek in Three Women, but with a PVC dress.

She looks the best that she has ever looked in a photo with the purple eyeshadow in the third photo. You can really see how angular and lovely she is in that photo. I’m beginning to think that my opinion is always the *exact opposite* of TLo’s opinion.

I can’t help but think the second one looks like a mug shot. Like she got really drunk on her wedding day and had to be arrested after attacking the photographer.
