Vogue: The Cast of ‘Les Misérables’

And now for your Pretty of the Day, kittens. We hated the shots of Anne Hathaway yesterday, but that’s at least partially because we think Annie Leibovitz makes a terrible fashion photographer. She’s much, much better at these sorts of staged tableaux. And the costumes are gorgeous.

We’ll say one thing about the filmed Les Miz: they nailed it on the casting of the Thénardiers. HBC and SBC are perfect for the roles. Whatever else happens with the movie, you can bet that “Master of the House” is going to be hilarious.

  YouTube is your friend. May I recommend rummaging there for every Eddie Redmayne clip/interview about the play RED. And he was young, but also beautiful as Julianne Moore’s son in the film Savage Grace; you can find clips from that as well. (Unfortunately, in both of those he’s doing an American accent, so you don’t quite get the full E.R. experience…) Happy hunting!

  Anne Hathaway actually did musicals prior to her film career (and was the original choice for Christine in the Phantom of the Opera movie). I know HBC, SBC, and Amanda have all been in at least one film musical and Russell Crowe has performed as a singer with his band.

    I don’t think Mama Mia! counts in terms of Amanda, but I *did* read somewhere that she was opera trained at some point, so that helps. Honestly, Cosette is such an unimportant (and kinda annoying) character that I wouldn’t be that upset if she wasn’t up to par. Eponine, however, would have been a deal-breaker (And I’m glad they stuck with certified broadway talent in Samantha Barks)

        It’s more pop-style singing, which I consider almost a different genre from traditional Broadway theater. I mean, Meryl Streep can fake her way through Mama Mia, but she couldn’t through something more operetta-like such as Les Miz or Phantom

    I know for HBC and SBC they are both rather “character” singers. They can carry a tune, but it is more a speak-y singing if that makes any sense, which I think is perfect for the roles they have because the roles, from my understanding, are “characters.”

        I beg to differ on HBC’s “singing” as Mrs. Lovett. She did a great job, but that wasn’t singing. It was barely singing with much help from auto-tune, amplifiers and a great sound engineer.

      And they’re going to use that style mostly in the film, I think. I saw “Skyfall” last weekend and there was a longish trailer for Les Mis with Jackman talking about how they did the singing, since they generally have to do so many takes and the actors need to be able to preserve their voices. He demonstrated a bit of singing and it sounded to me like he had a little trouble on the high notes. I’m really not interested in paying theater prices to see them butcher a musical – especially Russell Crowe, since ‘Stars’ is my favorite song from the show and I just can’t see him doing it justice.

    Having heard Russell Crowe’s band I’d call that “singer” rather than actual singer. And If Madonna has taught me anything (other than the value of aging gracefully) it is that singing and musical theatre are very different things.

      He’s not *that* bad. I guiltily admit to having seen him in concert with Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, and he holds his own. I’m not saying he’s got Broadway skills, but I’m hoping he delivers something along the lines of what Gerard Butler accomplished in Phantom of the Opera. Not the Broadway musical experience, but good enough for film, a medium where being able to convey emotion with a twitch of an eyebrow is more important than reaching the back row. I’ve heard Anne Hathaway’s singing in the trailer criticized as weak and reedy, but she’s not delivering a power ballad like a stage Fantine — she’s singing to someone who might as well be sitting next to her, and it’s a lovely and quite different performance. So I hold out hope for Russell, because he sure as hell does look the part.

  I don’t know their histories, but based on the previews that I’ve seen on YouTube… Seyfried and Crowe are not good and Hathaway and Jackman are amazing and ought to make up for it. I might have to stick my fingers in my ears through “Stars” if Crowe’s singing on that is as bad as in the other stuff I’ve seen. And Hathaway had me crying just in the preview.

I think Anne Hathaway was miscast. I hope I’m wrong. Being a life long Les Miserables junkie, I just can’t envision Fantine in Anne Hathaway or visa versa. I hope her performance shatters my heart into a million pieces. I really do.

        Anne Hathaway surprisingly was not as bad as I thought she would be, but I think Nolan “underwrote” her character so it wudn’t look like Anne was really “trying” to be MickyPheif.

  I have mixed feelings about Anne (although they lean toward positive), but I think she’s going to do phenomenally in this role. They showed the featurette before “Skyfall,” and my mom, who had made a comment similar to yours before she came on screen, saw her and reacted quite viscerally. Said she got chills.

  I feel the same way: I’ve grown up knowing this musical by heart and that’s the ONE casting I’ll struggling with, and I like Anne Hathaway. I think it might be the trailer: I think she sings “I dreamed a dream” a bit too hysterical, when I always saw it as kind of hopeless and depressed. By the time Fantine is selling her hair and prostituting herself, she’s kinda dead inside, not sobbing hysterically like I see in the shot of them cutting her hair off.

        It was a work thing, and we actually spent a couple hours talking together. I had a work-related technical glitch, which was embarrassing, and he could have gotten all pissy about it, but he didnt; he was a total sweetheart.

    The husband and I saw Les Miz at the Kennedy Center a zillion years ago, and it was a striking production, with a wonderful Javert. I’m still not sure if I”m going to check out the movie adaptation, but then again, it does have Mr. Jackman….

  It’s a little weird how Samantha Barks has been almost entirely absent from this movie’s marketing. It’s a hugely famous role with one of the show’s iconic songs. Sure, she’s probably the least-known person in the cast, but Jennifer Hudson got plenty of face time for “Dreamgirls” in magazines and the like.
  
  It really doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m starting to wonder if something went very wrong with her performance and the studio is trying to direct attention elsewhere. I hope not.

      They have surprisingly similar resumes, so it just struck me as strange that their first major roles are being handled so differently, marketing-wise.

      How interesting! It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case, although I think it would be a little silly. The last two years, the Supporting Actress Oscar has gone to a woman who was nominated alongside another woman from the same film (Octavia Spencer from The Help and Melissa Leo from The Fighter). It’s a fairly common occurence in that category, so there’s not much need to ignore one person and throw money and effort behind the other.
      
      (Disclaimer: I haven’t seen this movie, so at this point, I have zero rooting interest in whether Anne Hathaway or Samantha Barks gets an Oscar nomination.)

God bless Bellatrix. She’ll be PERFECT for Mme. Thenardier. I bet Sacha will rock M. Thenardier as well, but I have to admit my vision of the master of the house has been significantly colored for years…our high school did a production of Les Mis, and M. Thenardier was played by perhaps the biggest non-football playing guy in school, made up to look slovenly. He was a perfect fit, IMHO, despite having virtually no musical experience. Sacha just seems too kempt and toned. Still, I would LOVE to see this rendition all the same.

With the others, I look at the photos and see the characters, but with her I still just see AH. Dear lord, the promotions for this movie need to STOP ignoring Samantha Barks. You know if they’d given TSwift the role, she would have been plastered all over the advertisements. Samantha is gorgeous and sings beautifully, and Eponine is pretty much the most well known female role in the show, with its most famous song. This is getting ridiculous.

  It’s really silly if you think about it, because they need to get people into the seats who don’t already know the musical, and Eponine is the character (besides Val Jean) that most people relate to.

I cannot wait for this film. I saw a short film about it in the trailers for Wreck-It Ralph yesterday and it looks gorgeous. Casting is superb. Poor baby Cosette is a girl with no name, though . And she sings the most beautiful song. I may have to haul my kids out on Christmas day to see the film (interesting opening).

I was at a movie (Pitch Perfect) last week, and the girls in the row behind me sang along with every song they knew. Off key. Loudly. Just ruined the movie for me. I can’t wait to see how Russell Crowe handles Javert’s big aria. I know he does rock and roll, but this is more operatic.
I hate to admit it, but I’m looking forward to seeing this. I hate hate HATE Les Miz. Really. It’s bombastic and overproduced, and I’ve never liked any stage version I’ve seen of it (I’ve seen three, one against my better judgement and two against my will), but I think it could work as a movie.

  I almost think Les Miz would work better in a movie format than a stage. Some songs really demand an intimacy that the stage just can’t give. My husband is NOT looking forward to seeing this movie, but I saw all the Marvel movies with him, including sequels, so he’s now stuck holding the kleenex for me.

Eddie Redmayne annoys the CRAP out of me, and I can’t pinpoint why. Every role he’s ever in I’ve just hated. I think it was when I was forced to watch My Week with Marilyn on an 11 hour flight. Oh my God I hated that piece of shit. Then he was in some horrible show I was forced to watch at my job with that French actress who I ALSO irrationally cannot stand (the one who plays Fleur in Harry Potter). Okay, okay, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but I almost don’t think I can watch this movie now. It’s totally irrational I know.

  The play isn’t set in the Victorian era. It begins at the Bourbon Restoration 1814/1815-1830 and ends just after the Second French Revolution Trois Glorieuse (1830) . I think these events feature quite importantly in the story line. Victoria didn’t take the English throne until 1837. The romantic hairstyle is fairly accurate for a young man of the 1820-30′s.

    Because it leans a leetle starboard to fauxhawk for my tastes–maybe it will be better in the movie itself.

      No, his hair looks about right for a young man of the period. That brushed forward style was very popular in the first half of the 19th century.

I didn’t realize Eddie Redmayne is in this — he’s really not a very good actor. However, I’ll still see it because everyone else is so good. The photo of Amanda Seyfried is great — love the brown backdrop with the purple and pink.

These photos are wonderful, it almost makes me want to see the film. I saw the musical and hated it but…maybe I could watch it one more time, it feels like it would be rude not to. Russell Crowe looks incredible.

The pictures are lovely, and I agree with the bitter kittens who are upset that Eponine isn’t shown here at all. What gives with that? Also, the only thing that bothered me in all the previews I have seen: All we here is “Dreamed a Dream”. That is fine, but if you’re going to sing the song, and use it as your only promotion, at least get the words right. At the end, Anne sings, “Now life has killed A dream I dreamed.” Fine. Except that the line is “Now life has killed THE dream I dreamed.” That annoys me every time, and I cannot get past it. Of course, I’m still going to be there Christmas Day to see how it all works out on the big screen.

If the photos are catching just a glimpse of how the movie is staged, we’ll be in for a treat Christmas Day. I’m going in blind, just as I did for Chicago. Had not seen a stage production of it, so my thoughts weren’t colored by previous performances. Same with this.

I’ve been tired after two terrifying film adaptations of lesmis-the novel, but these pics manage to get me excited again. I mean, Hugh! Helena! Sasha! Russell! But where’s Eponine? My favourite character.

I’m so upset that Eponine never gets any love. Even though she’s not a well-known movie star, she does have the most recognizable solo in the whole film.
