Taylor Swift for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine

Tay looks like the photographer just told her she’s fat or something:

Taylor Swift covers the December 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine photographed by Paola Kudacki and styled by Beth Fenton.

Don’t cry, Tay! Write a song about how mean photographers are!

On what she wears: “I’m in a predicament where I can’t wear a dress twice or else it’s pointed out in magazines. So unfortunately I have to shop for dresses all the time. There’s just something so feminine about a dress. Whether it’s a summertime dress that makes me feel carefree, an evening cocktail dress that makes me feel fancy or a vintage dress that makes me feel like a ’50s housewife — which I enjoy feeling like, for some reason — I just really like dresses.”

On dating: “It needs to be equal. If I feel too much like I’m wearing the pants, I start to feel uncomfortable and then we break up. [Relationships are] the ultimate collaboration, [but sometimes] it’s wonderful to hand over the reins to your boyfriend when you control so much of these big, high-pressure decisions, you know? That is a huge defining factor in who you choose to be with.”

On relationships as a source of inspiration for her music: “Some combinations of people are toxic, you know? You have to find the right one that isn’t just going to explode into fiery ash and destruction. Despite all of that and how unpleasant it is, as a writer you get a lot from it. It’s a crazy justification system. You know that guy you really wish you could erase from your memory? But then the answer is track six, eight, 12, and 13.”

We have … thoughts … on the above quotes, but people tend to get all rage-y when we say not-nice things about her, so we’ll leave the discussion of them up to the Bitter Kittens.

  I think she’s great too. It can’t be easy. I mean, her odds of having a relationship where a guy just likes her and they can both be a little goofy and unsure about it are about zero. No matter how much money she makes, that must suck. And yeah, she sounds dopey complaining about having to buy dresses all the time. But even if she does repeat a shoe or an outfit here or there, developing an image is part of her job. She has to put together a daily look and have that look build a unique, well-defined persona, and if she slips up, it impacts her career. Of course, since she’s ultra-privileged, she’s not supposed to complain at all about the microscope she’s under. Having to handle this kind of thing at 22 just seems like such a nightmare …

And yes, people always complain about these soundbites from celebrities, but man, if someone had been around me when I was 22 with a tape recorder, I think I would die of embarrassment. We’re all stupid at 22, we just don’t get our stupidity published in magazines, thank god.

  Seriously, yikes. I usually defend her to an extent, but those quotes make me wince. How is a relationship “equal” if you concede that you prefer to “hand over the reins” to your boyfriend? That’s not an equal partnership- that’s losing yourself in a relationship because you put all of your energy into something else (in Taylor’s case, her career). Taylor is young so hopefully she will mature with time, but for now I just want to tell her to give up dating for awhile and enjoy her success. She doesn’t need a man to validate anything she has.

    Oh, come on, now. I can’t STAND Taylor, and I don’t think she means it that way. It’s not fun to have the entire burden for planning and decision-making in a relationship, no matter what gender you are. That gets boring, not to mention giving the decision-maker the feeling that s/he is the only one doing the hard work in a relationship. Yes, sometimes it IS nice to hand over the reins and be taken out on a date that was planned by someone else. I think most people who are decisive in their professional lives can relate to wanting the relaxation of someone else doing the heavy lifting on deciding how and when to have fun, now and then. Who wants to get home from a stressful day at work (even if “work” is posing for Harper’s Bazaar…) and hear “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Not me!

      Oh I agree, and I think you misunderstood me. Obviously there is give-and-take in a relationship, and if your career takes up a lot of your energy and effort, it’s nice to know that your partner can ease the burden of day-to-day minutia. What I wrote is more in regards to everything Taylor said- that she enjoys feeling like a 50s housewife, the part of giving the reins to her boyfriend, the fact that her relationships are so tumultuous (although I can sympathize with her on that one)- and her overall persona, plus what we already know of her public relationships. She DOES seem to get lost in her relationships, and she does seem to spend quite a bit of time discussing them. Again though, to her credit, a lot of 22 year olds do the same thing- and I roll my eyes at them, too.

        Eh, my interpretation of this was just that she’s one of those type-A types who finds the idea of handing over control sexy. The girl version of the CEO who wants a dominatrix in the bedroom. Not necessarily anything wrong with that. But granted that’s partly because I’ve always assumed a lot of her relationship tumult is carefully managed and strategic. *shrug* Who knows.

        I do think poor Tay-Tay is more than a little confused sometimes, though. She had such a sheltered and privileged upbringing, and now she’s supposed to be a role model when she hasn’t even really figured out what she wants, besides a constant stream of handsome celebrity boyfriends to write songs about. I won’t pity the poor little rich girl too much, but she does seem amusingly naive sometimes, in a way that would probably be cute for about six dates and infuriating thereafter.

        I agree with you that she does seem sheltered, and giving her a microphone only makes her lack of experience even more noticeable. Her interviews don’t normally set me off- they all sound pretty similar, for the most part- but something about this combination of quotes didn’t sit well with me. However, I’ve now commented on this thread four or five times, and I’m somewhat horrified that I’ve spent this much time discussing Taylor Swift’s love life. Let this be my last comment on the subject.

In this day and age, we tend to appreciate celebrities that deign to wear the same dress or clothing item more than once. It makes them human. And if it’s good enough for Cathey Cambridge or the FLOTUS, it’s good enough for you, Tay Tay.

Does anyone remember that episode of Boy Meets World where Eric starts dating this aspiring songwriter who is super sugary sweet and obnoxious so he dumps her? Then she writes an angry song about how shallow he is, it goes to #1, and she becomes famous. That’s what she reminds me of, especially that comment about using relationships as a source of inspiration.

  She is at least 6 feet tall. I happened to stand next to her once in Hendersonville, Tenn. right before the whole Kanye thing, when she was known in Nashville but not really anywhere else. She towered over me and I’m a tall woman. (I know the bios all say she’s 5’11 or less but that’s not true. I think those bios also tend to go the opposite way on men, saying short male celebrities are at lest 5’11 or taller.)

She looks amazing in the more ‘mod’ 60s-early 70s looks as well as the 50′s vintage that she likes. These are very pretty.
I could care less about whatever babble a young pop star has to babble about; it all sounds like Tiger Beat Magazine to me; and it’s
ALWAYS sounded that way to me, even when I was a teen. Somehow I knew none of it had anything to do with what I liked or disliked;
what I found important or what I disdained.
Taylor Swift’s music or tastes don’t hurt my feelings any more than any other pop star or actor at large. I don’t ascribe that kind of value
or importance to anyone, other than family and friends. I guess I never saw the value in the kind of fan-drama that is so prevalent today.
I just can’t find the meaningfulness that so many seem to have in her words or song lyrics. I don’t even think that the ‘youngsters’ that
make up her primary audience will even recall these light weight melodies in a year or so.
She’s very pretty and she seems kind of nice. That’s it for me. I don’t even like her music, but I could hate on alot of pop stars’ music.

she’s not a natural beauty, let’s face it, but she does love clothes and i do appreciate that about her. and i am always partial to a ’60s-’70s inspired shoot. long straight hair and bangs is a thing i love, probably because i have curly hair which stays straight only as long as the iron works and i don’t shower. sigh. anyway, there’s a cool jean shrimpton-esque vibe here. the photog did a great job with her assets (long hair, long legs).
