      Desk Set was cute, and one of my mom’s favorites too — though it doesn’t quite crack my top list:) Hepburn and Tracy movies were a major hallmark of my childhood, to the point my only daughter is named after her. Personally, I think Adam’s Rib was probably my favorite of their movies together, with The Philadelphia Story (anti-feminist currents and all) being my favorite movie of all time.

Happy Holidays, Kittens. I think I’ll start with a glass of dry sherry; it will go nicely with the color scheme in the bar.

I’m a few weeks into radiation and it seems to be going fine. Eyelashes and eyebrows are starting to grow back in, as is my hair. I have fuzz all around except on top; I look like I have male pattern baldness. However, I’m damn happy to see any hair.

Hugs to all my fellow Kittens going through this; I hope you are all doing well and wish you strength and fortitude. Onward!

You sound strong, girlfriend, and I’m pulling for you. Hope your skin is holding up; radiation can be so devastating – blisters, all that bad stuff. My hair seems to be growing on my head, but I’m thinking I may be losing my eyelashes again, and the brows are no-shows. I’m determined that they’ll come back eventually.

Good for you on the aerobic exercise; I was at a Gold’s Gym Sunday morning, and the endorphins that come from exercise are really picker-uppers. All that strengthening helps in the battle, m’dear. Keep it up!

  Apparently minimal brows are all the rage (see Jessica Chastain). How is your neuropathy doing? Going away I hope. I wish I had some real BK’s for gym support. It gets lonely out there. But if I ever have to fight the big C, it is heartening to know there is a built-in community of support right here.

    Oh, Qitkat, having a gym buddy absolutely is the way to get your reluctant self into the spandex and sneaks. I wish I had one for the powerwalking that I do when time and conditions permit. You’re both not wanting to work out, but you think of the other, and… you go to the gym and all feel so much better for it.
    
    The neuropathy, which begins to diminish starting at about 2 weeks after the infusion but never has disappeared, is returning and spreading a wee bit. I couldn’t discern hot from cold touches on some spots on the top of my left foot at the doctor’s this morning, but he felt it was close on to my response a month ago. More testing tomorrow afternoon. What was rough was the pain in my knee, ankle and foot joints for 60 hours last week. Unrelenting and akin to being battered with a lead pipe. This sure ain’t for sissies. But yes, heavens forfend you join our ranks, but you’ll have a caring crew to support you if it (or any other health calamity – we are non-judgmental!) occurs.

      Neuropathy is such a bitch. And that kind of prolonged pain, wow, I really sympathize. All the BK’s seem so strong who are dealing with affects of chemo. It can’t be easy to hang tough, but I know you cherish your friends and family who help you cope. It’s remarkable how the body and brain interprets pain. There’s a lot of amazing research going on about it. Saw a recent Charlie Rose episode about pain which featured a Nobel winning brain doctor. Fascinating, and such an important field with much to learn.

      Oh, NDC, sorry to hear that you’re suffering for the anti-recurrence insurance your Taxol may provide. Hoping things do not get Worse. (And that the hair re-growth continues!) Feeling good enough to go to the gym is a good sign, I hope.

    I’ve found exercise buddies in the oddest of people, sometimes, so hope you get lucky.
    
    But the best way I found to get regular about exercise is to keep trying and failing until it “takes” – meaning you can actually remember, in a dim, intellectual way, what you *like* about it well enough to have that tip you over into actually going, which, sometimes, helps you to remember to go again.
    
    In my case, it has major anti-depressant and anti-anxiety effects that I really, really like – though it took me 20 years of re-discovering this property over and over again – mostly during crisis points in my emotional life – before my dim brain and indolent nature allowed me to put things together and establish a regular & self-reinforcing habit. Though like a former drinker, I’m all too aware that I’m subject to relapse.

    Have you tried swimming instead of a gym? I don’t know why, but every time I go to our local pool, every regular around me turns into my personal cheerleader, wholeheartedly advocating for my success in good health

      I ought to. It’s been suggested to me by physical therapists and others. I’m a little ashamed to admit I feel very self-conscious in a swim suit. But I ought to get over it, I know.

      I was when I first started, too! There are some women there who wear wet suits, which is probably for warmth rather than coverage, but after a while I just got used to looking wobbly and nobbly like everyone else, and no one there really stares unless they’re 4. Took about a month of being around a bunch of old women and moms to go “Screw it. I’m not hiding behind a towel anymore!”
      
      I’ve seen some gals use the olympic type swimsuits that cover the legs, which is probably something I would want as I lose more weight, but you almost always have to buy them online. Just a thought!

      You also learn when your pool is quiet pretty quickly which minimizes your exposure to other eyes.
      
      And just picture me at the pool and you’ll feel better. I wear a swim cap (to protect my already dry long hair from any more chemicals than necessary), goggles, and a nose plug — I look ridiculous. (Though I do now have a good plug that just clamps instead of my first couple that used a strap, which ran along with the strap for my goggles over the side of my rubberized alien shaped head… yeah, it’s a hot look)

I’ve been doing well, so far, through the first weeks of the Halloween -Thanksgiving – Christmas/Festivus/Your Solstice Holiday of Choice – New Year’s excuse-to-indulge season, but it’s only been possible because I know & dread the perils yet ahead. (I’ve lost considerable weight before, and while I’ll always fluctuate, I am never, never, never going to let myself get that far behind the 8 ball again. Imagine Scarlett & Tara & “as God is my witness.” That’s how I mean that.)

  Been there, honey! I went from 145 to 220 (see the love I have for you all, I’m willing to give real numbers! and with a very LONG time — about 2 years of work but interrupt and set back partially through pregnancies — I got down to 135. I’m up a bit from that now and lacking the motivation to get down immediately but I will NEVER go back to that weight.

    Oh, I know the feeling! I lost half of mine (no, I am superstitious about naming numbers – but the grand total was about 70 lbs) “easily” through emotional distress that left me too wrought up to eat and which motivated fanatical recourse to exercise for its anti-anxiety effects. The rest was a long, erratic, two steps forward, one step back process that I never want to pursue again. I deeply resent all the emotional energy I’ve put into my weight over the years – especially since when I was young and thin, thinking that I was not thin enough tainted a lot of time – and I am not going to have to physically fight it again. Especially now since I’m middle aged and facing the reality that more and more of my time is spent with the actual *real* health issues of myself and others. (So far, mostly others. Knock wood for as long as it lasts.)

      Still playing on the drug merry-go-round, trying to find something that will work and have manageable side effects. The most recent makes me feel like my skin is crawling every time I lay down, so I can sleep — but it has given me time to do the most awesome nails ever: the Death Star blowing up Aldaaran on my thumbs and the Battle of Yavin on my fingers. It took 4 nights total and many thanks for ambidexterity:) It’s also why I’m not worrying about being 10 up from my best — I’m monitoring to stay under 160 (for me, that’s a 12 which is only a bit heavier than I like) but I’m more concerned with getting the health under control first.
      
      Mostly, though, I’ve just been working like crazy which is why I’m so late!

I’ve had to correct nurses upon occasion in This Medical Year, too. Glad you pulled your caregivers/meal deliverers up short.

      Why, oh, why do so many hospitals serve such wretched vegetarian food? I was in the hospital for a two weeks earlier this year after a (thankfully) mild stroke. I was served chicken in the acute care hospital although my chart should have said I was vegetarian. The food in the rehab hospital was mostly canned crap. The care from the nurses, doctors and therapists was wonderful, but the food was just terrible!
      
      For a vegetarian, I roast a really good turkey for the carnivores in the family. I’ve always used the recipe from James Beard’s book Theory and Practice of Good Cooking. It works every time.

      Eggplant parmesgiana (sp?), ratatouille, quiche florentine, my amazing portobella pasta salad, any number of pasta dishes, macaroni and cheese, red beans and rice, mushroom risotto… is it really that freaking hard?!? I love meat, and I have not a single ethical issue with my top of the food chain status, but there are a lot of great vegetarian dishes.
      
      (I also am boggled by recipes for spaghetti sauce. YOU DO NOT NEED SUGAR OR OIL TO OVERPOWER YOUR SAUCE, PEOPLE!!! I had one at my in-laws with 14 grams of fat per serving for a vegetarian sauce — you can add sweetness with herbs if your tomatoes don’t have enough and flavor with spices and vegetable choices. End food rant of a long time dieter.)

      I remember when my late Great Aunt Prunella (yes, really) was in the hospital and the orderly brought her dinner which was a plate of different colored mashed up goo and she looked at me and said “…and when did HAL start cooking the swill in this place?” It took me a moment to realize she was referring to the goo the astronauts were eating on 2001: A Space Odyssey.
      
      Being the well brought up Great Nephew, I immediately went out and got her a take out of NC style pulled pork, hushpuppies, greens and Brunswick stew from her favorite hole in the wall in downtown Raleigh which she relished.
      
      They don’t make ‘em like her anymore…

      Oh, you WERE well brought up! Decent food brought into the hospital is a blessing of grace and mercy. (As long as it doesn’t completely tip the patient over into crisis, since so often what we want is contra-indicated.)
      
      My ex- brought in hot, fresh, Thai take-out after the birth of our first – and hung out in an ergonomically impossible visitors’ chair and ate with me. One of those “ah, at least at one time we worked” memories.

      I like that story. One of my favorite memories of my dad was when he was doing chemo before his death and I would sit with him through his treatments. I’d bring him food every 2 hours — a full meal, for some reason he was always starving during chemo, and never got sick — and we’d watch history specials and debate the significance of the subjects.

      Yet when I had a TINY sensitivity to egg whites — not even an allergy, so much as signs that I may develop one someday that occur when eating large amounts of egg by itself — I couldn’t get virtually ANYTHING to eat because it was all made with eggs and I was down as having an allergy.       Tofurky isn’t bad, but it really can’t compare to my roast turkey. It is rather dry and the baste they tell you to use doesn’t add much. I’d really like to have tried a Gardein faux turkey this year, but I couldn’t find one. Field Roast makes a faux turkey, but it’s pretty bad, IMHO.

I had a detached retina in my left eye and had to have surgery on it. Then I had to keep my head facing the floor for two weeks. to keep the gas bubble they put in in the right place to hold the retina in place.

You poor thing. I had a retinal tear two years ago and was in peril of developing a detachment. It didn’t happen, but ye gods, the operation (and that would have been the third for me to undergo in 2 months that late summer/early fall) sounded horrifying, and that positioning of the head would have made working and doing much of anything quite impossible. I hope you’re ok now. You’ll be seeing your retina doc for a couple of years on follow-up; I was just graduated by mine in October.

Hey, y’all *waving* How much hand-wringing will we have to endure from Josh/Miss Clinique in this episode? ‘Cause I think his tailoring abilities for the gents are probably pretty punk. Ivy for the auf? I wonder how Emilio will do; my money’s still on him.

As to TG, and the day and a half after, massive fatigue and tremendous joint pain from Big Dose o’ Chemo #3 administered on the 20th. That made giving thanks a bit strained, but it passed, and my fabulous fambly in the Commonwealth was most considerate and caring. Good vittles, and yes, when my appetite kicked in after the holiday I returned home with a couple of lbs that I’m determined to jettison, and some has disappeared already.

Hard to believe that December is two days away!

  Being somewhat west of Beantown last week was the furthest I’ve traveled in the past 10 1/2 months, so it was a Big Deal. Having a wunnerful brother and his extraordinary wife (my CA inspiration as she’s a 2x BCA survivor) and a loving niece and nephew made that trip a joy.
  
  My oncologist, who’d been rather pessimistic about me and this maintenance dose protocol, was quite optimistic about me when I saw him Tuesday – happy with my blood levels and lungs, referring me to a neurologist for a baseline test of function of my neuropathic tootsies. I seem to be on sched for Dose #4 on the 18th, which will have me manifesting all the pain and fatigue symptoms on the 20th when I fly out to the Mitten State for a week with my wonderful sister and her fambly. That will be the first air travel in a year, too. Cigar tube of germs, just what an immunocompromised gal needs. Yiii.

    Thrilled (no, really, I am) to hear your oncologist was optimistic! And I admire your grit. The visit will be worthwhile, but not everyone would gather up their will, make the plans, take the appropriate protective and palliative measures, and actually do it.

      formerlyAnon, it may be that he realizes I’m pretty determined to go through as much of the maintenance protocol as I can (am I a chemo junkie, I wonder?), but I will do what he says, if he decides the side effects become too dire. I have truly spectacular physicians – experienced, wise, caring and compassionate. I know they’re crafting the best treatment plan for me, with the goal being the longest remission/recovery possible. He even used the c-u-r-e word … wowie.
      
      As for being back in The Mitten State – I have family and very dear friends out there, so all will be fine, I’m sure. My sis, though younger than I, can be like a fierce mama bear looking after me, so I won’t get into exposure trouble. It’s just that airplanes are such pools of miasma – a self contained environment of recirculated air. Lots of sanitizer, scrupulous custody of the hands away from face, and hand-washing the minute I am jettisoned from the jet!

I kinda forgot about PR for a while. And I didn’t miss it! But I’d never miss seeing all the PUFBKs. Or, of course, Uncles Tom and Lorenzo.
Busy as a bee (ha!) getting ready for a local Arts/Crafts show this weekend. It’s actually to showcase The Hubs’ wood working–he’s been making tables with reclaimed wood and antique treadle sewing machine bases. We’ll try to sell a few (one, even…) at this show, then they will be on Etsy. I’m whipping up a few traditional quilted table toppers and runners, along with a pillow or two.
And–of course–I’ve left a bunch of work to the last minute…because that’s just What I Do. *sigh* But shoud be fun.

This PR challenge should prove interesting, since making men’s wear always seems to flummux the designers. And watching that never gets old. LOL…

I am wondering what the hell made me think that I could work full time (of course, I’m a grown person with a mortgage) and go to school full time (of course, I should have finished my degree when I was younger, but I had partying to do, and part time was taking too long) and “just sell a few things on Etsy” all at once. NOT fatter. I happen to be 20 lbs less fat than I was on September first, when I started trying to be less fat. I have to be 30 lbs less fat to be slim, but I am officially two sizes smaller, and I went out on Thanksgiving for karaoke with my fiance and every fella that didn’t know we were together hit on me, so I am pretty happy. The only complaint I have is that skinnying up seems to have made it impossible for me to get warm, so I am going to have to watch PR with frikkin’ legwarmers, a blanket, and a hat on, after spending all day at work with a wool scarf and kneesocks in my cube. Not fashion forward, man. Thankfully, champagne is still in my meal plan, so that and my burly manimal plus the return of my favorite show should help!

I cooked for eight, with four people in attendance, two of them light-eating senior citizens. Hmm. But I had my favorite cranberry dish, cranberry fool, which totally beats out cranberry sauce (whip up some fresh cream with a smidge of powdered sugar, then put some cranberries in the blender and fold it in; it’s like cranberry ice cream). Pumpkin pie, turkey, potatoes, beans with a little honey in them, cranberry stuffing… all the fixin’s. As to whether I’m heavier, well…

Leftovers did last a while, though.

Laura K’s was almost raggedy; it was a mess and it looked like she really didn’t have an idea of her own. I was sure she was auf’d.
Although I liked all the construction and the fit of Emilio’s; I have to say it appeared somehow Victor/Victoria to me, or perhaps
Victor/Victor; it was very costume-y to me, not really avant garde. There were other designs that I found more appealing, or
inventive. But since I have only the sketchy glimpse to recall from the effing editing; I’ll wait for the stills to confirm my thoughts.
I liked Uli’s punk rock looking duo. Casanova’s was disco-androgyny. Kayne’s had alot of work in it, and It was much better than
LK’s - it wasn’t a great look; but it felt like it was 3/4 of the way there. I can’t even remember Ivy’s. Althea’s may be the most

Poor Kaynebow, wish LK could go instead. I guess I will see when I watch, but according to your comments, the judges were downing the crack hard and fast tonight as usual.

Why is it ALWAYS the “beautiful” Georgina Chapman? I find it so very annoying. But then, I’m finding most of the season annoying. Glad Emilio won tonight as his entry was pretty much perfect in every way – even though Miss Isaac wondered – aloud – if it depended too much on “hat”. God, does he listen to the words coming out of his mouth? Sorry to see Kayne-bo go home. He’s such a happy spot in this show…loved the hounds tooth, hated the ruffles.

I hated the chopping editing during the runway show and the judging tonight. There was way too much chiffon for androgyny. I’m glad Emilio won, was very sorry to see Kayne go. I thought Laura Kathleen had the auf all sewed up.

Anthony Ryan was channeling Marc Jacobs. MJ wore a lace dress to the Met Gala last spring. It’s a good thing Nina Garcia and/or Michael Kors weren’t judging. They’d have mentioned it to AR just like they did to Kenley when she referenced Alexander McQueen and others. This seems to have gone over the judges heads or perhaps he’s one of the ‘darlings’. His exaggerated drawl is getting on my nerves. Glad Emilo won. His outfits were seriously fine.

I agree–AR is constantly derivative in his work, both in Allstars and during his season. Not that some of the major NYC designers aren’t, but still. Shiz is obvious. And with that said, it feels like Uli has been channeling Cavalli at times this season.

Thanks! I think tights are always in style, depending on how you wear them, but unfortunately I’m a redheaded pale sufferer-of-hives and often things like tights and shapewear and workout stuff that fits close to the skin and has lycra or other man-made materials in it will make me flare up. Aah, my Irish grandmother had none of these modern problems,I’m sure.

Now that I am a little less mediated, I think I’m going to write the head of dietary. I just pent 4 days intubated from an allergic reaction & that piece of fish as nearly half the plate. The poor person assigned to bring the plates around had no clue & never bothered to even glance at my ID bracelet Fish is not a vegetable!

Most hospitals have a patient ombudsperson and also someone in charge of what was at one time called “quality control,” or “compliance”, though I don’t know if those terms are still current, but aimed largely at ensuring that protocols and procedures are followed. You should include those – if you’re feeling really testy, also your insurance company. Driving you into a second allergic reaction is bound to be expensive for all parties (especially if you sue), and administrators/payers care about that more than anyone’s actual health, I sometimes think.

I went in the hospital early Sunday morning. They did the IV and my next conscious thought was Wednesday! I wasn’t hang over tired like you get with ambien. I have NO recollection of the time in the hospital. I just imagine having a 24hour life that some celebs have and having the power to command that sort of personalized treatment to be very, very frightening.
