Miss Liv took a great little edgy dress and turned it into office clothes. Tsk.

Granted, the dress went through some major changes as it traveled from runway to red carpet, but still. She could’ve edged this up with a killer belt. She could’ve done something a bit more showy with that great head of hair she’s got. She could’ve worn some jewelry and picked a bag that doesn’t look like a file folder. She could’ve burned those hiddy shoes as an offering of penance to the shoe gods and picked a pair with a little more oomph. She could’ve opened up the skirt a little and maybe put on some tights or colored hose.

You have offended us, Liv Tyler; offended us with your poor styling choices. Feel shame.

To be fair, the runway version is pretty ugly itself. It could have been much better. Those shoes are hideous and the biggest offenders of the look.

Holy crap. That pattern is so busy and repetitive that it makes her look like a huge block of blue and black. Think and stumpy, which is not something I’d ever associate with Liv Tyler. I can’t tell where her waist ends and her arms begin. It’s hideously unflattering.

As are the shoes, the bag and the hair. Blech.

Wow, I love that dress. Truly dismal choices in styling: what was the thinking behind that ponytail? I feel like someone (me) could yank her behind that hedge, take down the hair and muss it up a bit, unbutton a few buttons, loan her a belt, and send her back out looking a hundred times better than she does now.

I’m so confused about the changes separating the runway and the RC versions — they don’t really preserve the original idea behind the dress to me. Something hipster & nerd-rock-n-roll turned into something very dowdy that I don’t think would have been saved by better styling choices.

Not that I particularly like the runway version, either. Proenza Schouler almost always goes over my head.

I like how tights have gone from “verboten, evil, ugly, a sign of utter schlumpiness” to “something you’ll get critiqued for not doing”. It’s such a classic fashion-industry thing. To be clear, not critiquing TLo here: they’re totally right that tights would have been nice here, and part of fashion is in fact about knowing what’s in style and will resonate with viewers. But I’ve always preferred tights because I have legs that are decently shaped but don’t have great skin, and over the past five years or so that’s gone from hopelessly passe to totally on-trend, without the actually effect on how I looked changing at all.

What’s with the centered black button placket? Makes no sense with the buttons on the skirt. The original swirl of the dress is destroyed. Don’t love the print but the constellation of shiny buttons and longer hem and flash of leg on the model helped make it something…smething that looked interesting in motion. I don’t think this is a stand-and-pose dress.

Now this is the kind of dress that Mayim Bialik could wear and be a little less frumpy than usual. Assuming, of course, that she made better accessory choices than poor Liv here. Mayim is pretty short, so it would probably come down below her knees. It is possible to be covered up and still fashionable.

The cool design elements of the dress as shown on the RC model make it interesting, and they’ve all been removed! Why? And she’s got the legs to show off, and there’s no glimpse of thigh here. Boo!

  I don’t think she ever looks “sloppy”, but it’s true that she picks some silhouettes that I, as a similarly figured gal, would steer clear of. She tends to go for a slightly edgy aesthetic, which doesn’t always gel with her gorgeous face, if that makes sense.
  
  She’s also an actual size, not a 0-4, so she probably never gets free clothes. Which must suck, but doesn’t explain why she doesn’t have better accessories. And her hair is the best accessory of all, so I really don’t understand why she doesn’t let it down more.
  
  I’d love to see her opt for a more traditionally feminine style once in a while, just to mix it up. Something that defines her waist, yet flares over her hips. You don’t have to be a rock-star’s daughter all the time, Liv!

    Absolutely! And when I say sloppy it is no way related to her figure, I hope it didn’t sound that way. I think of her as head to toe gorgeous but unable to let go of her hipster-mom vibe which she carries from the streets to the red carpet. It’s a little juvenile.

While I’m all for raising the dropped waistband and removing the lace inserts, it would help if the dress defined her actual waist a bit more. Or if a belt were deployed. The black button placket and collar pull focus and the asymmetry that made this dress so fun is completely lost. The sandals might have worked better if she was flashing a little thigh, but I would have gone for metallic or oxblood shoes and bag.

Great face, though.

I whimpered a little when I got down to her shoes. Why? They’re so butt ugly. That and carrying a zippered portfolio are shame worthy. The runway style is great, the reworked look is not.

I’m going to put this one on whoever alters things from runway to rack. They took away every bit of edge it had and gave it a lot of frump. For shame, because I really like the print.

It’s demure, which might be a bad word in some circles. Can’t say I care for either the runway shoes or Liv’s choice of shoe, but I do like the black and blue print very much. It’s a useful dress that can work for day and go out to dinner. Is that damning with faint praise? Even celebrities deserve useful dresses.

I prefer what she’s doing to the way it looks on the runway. Her look has subtle edge. The runway is screaming “I’m EDGY! Seriously I am edgy! Look, slits!” I prefer subtle.
