We realize that Katie – even prior to her famous kidnapping – was never really all that flashy a dresser, but this is just plain old frumpy:

Geez, girl. It’s the opening night of your Broadway play. Couldn’t you have attempted something a little edgier or showier than “Head of the Bookkeeping Department at the company Christmas party?

We will now declare, through our red carpet tea leaf-reading ability, that she’s still in a post-divorce funk. Cheer up, honey! This is a good night for you! Go home and put on something red, then come back. Also: some makeup. Or at least, some makeup that makes you look good.

Wow, the proportions, and positioning of every element here are wrong. Sleeve length, hem length, belt position, embellishment size are all wrong for her. And that textile is flat out hiddy.

Aww! The make up is the only good bit! Not-quite Cathy Cambridge hair, horrible dress and shoes that are probably fierce but I can’t see them properly. Can’t believe Suri let her leave the house looking like this.

She did just get a good review for her work in the play in this morning’s Wall St. Journal, so maybe she’ll dress in a cheerier way next photo op. That “waiting for the reviews” time is always so nerve-wracking.

In other news, I love the “minaudiere”. What’s the difference between that and a clutch? (Other than language.)

Perfect dress for church or synagogue and we all need those some times. BTW, I once had a pair of bottega veneta shoes (a generous gift) that I thought were just plain black shoes but I always got compliments on them. It was the weirdest thing–strangers would say something. I mean, business men on elevators kind of strangers. There was something about those impeccably styled pretty plain black shoes that made strangers take notice. So I was wondering if in person this dress has that quality? But I don’t see it in the picture.

I think that is a dress where the wearer has to be very flat-chested, or the bib goes straight to frumpsville. On the model I think it looks kind of cool and goth-Victoriana, but on Katie it’s just…Victoriana.

Holy Hannah, this whole look speaks volumes of dead accounts. Dead accounts, dead people, just death! Makes me want to weep for sure. And don’t fool yourself if you think that minaudiere lightens that look any. It’s about as festive as a holiday bow on a tombstone.

The only good thing about this look is how the frumpiness of it clashes with the freshness of her face. During her totally and utterly not subdued years of marriage, I oftentimes forgot how young she is. So the face says “happy” but the clothes say “ugh get off my back, I still need to feed Suri after I’m back from this tub of shenanigans.”

She thinks it looks edgy and New York-y. That’s why she’s wearing it. She’s trying to be all about the ‘theater’ and not about the Hollywood. I think she did her own hair and make-up too. Come with us while Katie searches for her new identity – or her old one that she packed away so many years ago. That dress is hiddy though – in so many ways – and I am usually a huge BotVen fan.

    I know, right? I like an edgy dress, but this one is just so AGGRESSIVELY ugly that I wonder if the designer is just fucking with us. I mean the pattern is bad enough, but then you have the frayed trim, the glued-on doodads on what looks like a bib and then more black spangles glued to the skirt. The sleeve length looks terrible. Ay yi yi.

I rather like the dress on the model, but on Katie it does look frumpy. It’s funny because they both are wearing black hose and a black shoe with a strap. The hose on Katie are much more opaque…which probably adds to the frump factor, as well her hair is a disaster and competes with the collar. She doesn’t have a bad body, so it’s odd how slight differences, as well as the wearer, can really change the perception of a dress.

Gray opaque tights? They look like orthopedic hose. Sheers might have helped. But nothing is going to save that dress from just being hideous. I agree with the comment that she should cut her hair.

There is nothing attractive about this dress. The fabric looks like it is composed of asbestos. The neck embellishment is an atrocity and looks more like a checkerboard bib. The belt/waistband’s placement is questionable at best. It does not look any better on the model. Shred it and then burn it.

This really is like the stuffing from an old couch. The only interesting portion is the neckline which is obscured by her hair.

Well, I was about to happily pick apart how bloody awful this is, but then I remembered what I wore and what was going on in my head for about 18months post-breakup-of-major-controlling-relationship – so I’ve decided to send her good vibes instead.
To be clear, I’ve never been a fan – of her or the creature she was (is?) married to – but this is clearly an ‘I don’t CARE’/'cry for help’/'who AM I’ moment, yes?
