We don’t know, kittens. Sometimes a dress is just too much dress for its own good.

Allison Williams attends The Ninth Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards in New York City in Peter Som.

We like the shoes; her hair and makeup look great; and the color is beautiful on her. We even like the shape of the skirt. But that bodice … we just can’t get behind it. Especially since it’s so complicated it’s actually working against itself. The seams are way too prominent and the … what do you call them? Side straps? The side straps look wrinkled and crushed.

But maybe we’re just not getting it. We’re willing to hear a defense of this look. Remember to show your work.

  Exactly. Without the center cut out and that stupid little bow, it would have stood a chance. As it is, it’s out because the straps fight for focus with the cut out and that bow belongs on an entirely different, not architectural dress.

Ooohh, I don’t know… if it had the cross-straps over the shoulder OR the off the shoulder straps, it would be cute (maybe even with the cutout, which I just can’t get behind in many looks). The skirt is adorable and I love this color. I can’t help cringing a little when I look at this, so it’s gotta be OUT.

I give the designer credit for such an unusual design, but it’s really poorly executed, especially in the bust.

She is breathtaking, though, and as someone else said, she definitely outshines that wan, consumptive-looking model. Who may or may not have slept all night, and who clearly bypassed any hairdresser that may have been present.

By the way, does anyone else thing Ms. Williams looks like Amanda Peet? That’s who I thought it was.

Ugh. I hate it — the bodice is way over-complicated. The belly cut-out isn’t sexy, it’s just odd. Hardly anyone would be able to pull that off. The arm straps are unwearable: if she does anything other than stand with her arms at her side the straps look wonky. Even the hem is doing something strange. And the color and the twee little bow (actually the only things I might like about this if it were a different dress altogether) conflict with the efforts towards sexiness. Out out out.

I don’t LOVE this, but… I like it. IN. Can I defend that? Uh… given that it’s combining cues from two relatively “heavy” styles – corsetry/bondage and drapey satin dresses – it’s actually less heavy and complicated than it could have been, and the overall look is not quite like anything I’ve seen before. And it IS a good color on her.

It does need better tailoring, though.

It’s awfy badly made! The fabric is too bulky for the design. Had the off the shoulder portion been fitted to lie flat rather than have that pleat and the bust been tailored, darted, pressed then it might’ve worked. And I don’t like how the skirt hangs either.

I take your point, TLo, but I must say I’ve been fine with this sort of (otherwise wacky) thing on professional models when they attend charity dinners, FW parties, etc. as civilians. I expect it’s due to some sort of definition/classification bias in my brain — I actually see a different garment when one of those stylish giraffes wears it, vs. celebrities and society women.

Nevertheless, I think Miss Williams actually looks quite fetching. The only hiccup for me is the bow (a little too Easter Sunday on A.W.)

Out. On the model the bodice area looks pleated not seamed and the model is small-busted so all you see is pleating detail. Poor Allison actually has boobs that fill out the pleats and all you see are the seams and a little extra fabric that puts the fit off. My impression is that the top straps and all are supposed to look like a big, pink, stiff bow. Not so much bondage as gift-wrapping.

If you are going to wear a dress that is out of the box, then the fit better be PERFECT because you are going to garner a lot of attention. What is happening at the bust line is ridiculous. Moreover, it is no better on the model. Therefore it is a construction/design issue. OUT
