On why she never married:
“[Marriage] just wasn’t the thing I was drawn to. I certainly didn’t want it in my 20s. Or my 30s.”

On the possibility of having children:
“I don’t need to have the children in my life be a part of my literal flesh. And anyway, there’s still a possibility of that, I ain’t that old. I’m feeling very … capable.”

Sorry. We’re cranky. It’s just that no one ever asks male stars in their forties these questions. Unmarried, childless 40-somethings like George Clooney are charming rogues. Unmarried, childless 40-somethings like Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz are tragic cautionary tales.

      Yeah, he does actually get it relatively often, for a guy. At the presser for The Descendants, someone asked him about his love life and he said “What’s your name? Okay, So-and-so, we’re all a little disappointed in you.”
      
      Jon Hamm’s another one who seems to get the question from time to time, although those ones occasionally veer into “When are you gonna make an honest woman of Jennifer Westfeldt?” which is just the ickiest of all.

      Several years ago Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer both bet him something like 10K that he’d be married with children by the time he was forty. Since it was made public knowledge, the media feels compelled to check in now and again to see if he’s changed his mind. Jon Hamm’s also made it clear he and Jennifer are not in a rush to get married and have kids. My point is that they’re not being asked simply because they’re single and male but because it’s been made an “issue”.

THANK YOU. I dream of the day when the reproductive choices of women in general and ladystars in particular are no longer considered open topics for questioning or debate. Men almost never have to justify or defend their choice to not have children. Women? Almost always.

  I think it’s more likely that any societal evolution will mean that men & women in the “lighter” professions (entertainment, in this case) will BOTH be asked questions about their reproductive choices. Most people follow these folks in a gossipy way, wanting to know about their diets and what they eat for breakfast. It’s not like people who follow, say, Madeleine Albright or Condoleeza Rice – there certainly is some gossipy prurient interest, but anyone who really follows them is more interested, usually, in their thoughts on professional matters.a

    Anyway, I see your point that women in politics may have it different, but aren’t they also qualified as “masculine”? or something to the effect that you are either a feminine mother or a corporate/politics bitch. And there is always some judgement -starting with the assumption that you must be a tough one- if you are not married and have kids by a certain age.

These questions are not limited to 40 something stars. I have always been surprised by the number of people who felt free to question my reproductive choices when I was a young engineer. Then once I had children, the number of people who felt free to ask why I wasn’t a stay-at-home mom. I guess these are the people who read magazines like Elle

  People just like to judge women, it seems, much more so than men. If you’re not married, they are wondering why you’re not married. Once you’re married, they’re wondering when you’re going to have kids. If you have kids, they question everything from how you choose to feed your baby to your childcare options to your work schedule. All the while, making judgements about your appearance, because you must manage to look fuckable no matter what stage of life or career you’re navigating.
  
  I’m not saying men aren’t also judged in such ways, but I just don’t think it happens to the extent that women endure, whether you’re famous or just Jane Doe trying to get through your life.

You’re not being cranky. Unfortunately many of us non celeb females also face those questions far too often. In my earlier & more bitter post cancer years I used to point blank tell them I couldn’t bear children thanks to cancer just to see the look of horror on their faces. Now I’m a bit kinder, but it’s still a rude question to ask.

oh, for crap’s sake. Asking someone when they plan to have children is just tacky. I recommend a number of responses.

1. Stare blankly (suitable for any occasion)
2. Burst into tears (particularly effective when used on straight men)
3. ’Did the phone just ring?’ (suitable for any occastion)
4. ’Why are you asking about my sex life?’ (particularly effective when you know a person is shocked easily)

I wrote a long rant, and erased it. These kinds of interviews are worthless with their trite, repetitive, shallow, moronic, uninspired questions. The truth is that the mentality from centuries past, continues, that these women are old maids, although no one would dare to say it aloud. That in 2012, complete strangers (read between the lines here) think it is their business what a woman might or might not do with her uterus, is appalling, and galling.

Get off my lawn, and stay out of my uterus.

I wish high-profile women could figure out a way of saying something about privacy during the interview and make the interviewer move on. It’s hard to think of what they could say politely without the interviewer then making a judgement about them, like for example, saying she is bitter or something. I think the best answer is a question that leaves the interviewer no choice but to move on. Once I had someone come to my house to buy a carpet I was selling on CL, a complete stranger, and he asked me why I didn’t have any children.

Good call that the irritant is that they apparently don’t think to ask the elder boys these questions [or the boys feel no obligation to answer, and are not pressured to do so.]

Because, frankly, I think Elle readers would actually kind of like to hear George Clooney, et al.’s answers to the same questions. Why not get the full spectrum of canned answers to dopey questions if they (we) are reading the interview in the first place?
It’s the rare-to-nonexistent interview that isn’t more on the “gossipy lifestyle” end of the spectrum rather than the “introspective examination of your craft and what drives you” end.
