Allison Williams at Target + Neiman Marcus Event

Allison Williams attends the Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection launch event in New York City. Allison wore a Vince blouse, Rag & Bone jeans, Marc Jacobs for Target scarf, Casadei shoes, and Jennifer Meyer earrings.

Which is a relief, because her last few public appearance looks have been questionable, at best; a veritable cornucopia of trying too hard. It’s too simple a look to spend much time breaking down but we just wanted to feature her wearing something simple after those too-complicated dresses. She’s wearing essentially the same kind of outfit Katharine McPhee wore the other day, but it’s styled better and the pieces look more … we won’t say “expensive,” (although they do), so we’ll go with “impeccable.”

The only thing that kind of bugs is the half-assed way the scarf is draped on her. We can’t help but think – since it appears to be the only piece from a Target collection – that some publicist pretty much threw it on her just before she walked out on the step-and-repeat.

She looks perfect for the type of event, and location. Though I confess a certain sadness that Marc Jacobs is designing for Target. (sigh) Those sorts of collaborations rarely work out well for teh designer involved in the long run.

  I understand your perspective, but I’ll say as a woman who’s back in college in her late twenties & therefore on a STRICTLY tight budget (AKA: there’s no money to budget), it’s nice to have the option to walk into a Target and own something that says Marc Jacobs on it. Even if that sounds silly.

    And on that point I agree. In fact I’ve always wanted more real good design to end up in mass marlket environments, so people like thee and me, can actually contemplate getting to it. What ends up happening for the designer all too often, is a diminishment of cachet ,and ultimately, style impact. The willingness to allow their name to be used can be an awfully slippery slope. Care must be taken at all times not to over promote. I’m thinking of the name Pierre Cardin, in particular.

        I guess my biggest beef is that the industry seems to believe that they must dumb down a design in order to make it sellable. Sure, construction techniques, and fabric quality must be altered to bring something in at the right production price point, but the essential design quality should not have to suffer in the bargain. In the 40s and 50s a remarkable woman named Claire McCardell working in ready to wear, was able to design and produce a huge array of innovative, fun, and practical clothes that were entirely affordable for the average woman. It is possible to do.

I have always felt that excellent design, whether fashion, industrial, technological, architectural, interior, or any other type, enhances a person’s life, for convenience and comfort, aesthetics and usability. As we interact with design choices made by someone else, over and over, every day, it becomes far more than how something looks or feels or works, it may indeed, consciously and subconsciously, impact how we feel about our lives and our friends, coworkers and families, and our happiness too. High quality ought not to be a slave to high price.

        Sadly, we Americans have become to a very real extent, addicted to the notion of far larger wardrobes than are really needful, or affordable. So, we rely on cheaply made goods in order to have more options. Sure, there are millions for whom businesses like Target are the only real options, because of the price issue. I don’t mean to diss anyone for whom that is true.

  The thing that bothers me about the Target/designer collaborations is that the quality is usually so low. The designs are often cute, but the fabric, while nice to look at, has a horrible, synthetic cheap feel. The fit is bad. The quality of construction is low. And then the price is higher than normal because of the name. It just seems like they’re messing with us.

    And you’ve just nailed another reason why these partnerships end up badly for the designer. Suddenly, a couture deaigner’s name is being associated with shoddy, cheaply made goods. Not a good idea.

I’ve never noticed her ears before, which makes me think a ponytail might not be her best friend. Everything else looks really good though.

  True story, me, seventh grade, sensitive. Someone makes fun of my ears. Forever after I am self-conscious about my perfectly normal ears and forego wearing pony tails. Thank goodness this young lady is most likely mature enough to overlook such silly remarks. Especially with her normal ears.

It’s a shame, b/c that’s a cute scarf, and I’m all about scarf styling. However, I love a good navy and black, which is deployed oh so well here. I’m glad she ditched the godawful Walnut Grove Formal look that was her last. Still wearing the same nail polish, though.

      I am trying to talk about the color black, which is not a big seller in winter in large parts of the country. Brighter colors go better with dreary days, but not, apparently in New York and equally stylish places.
      
      If you’ve ever been to cities in western Canada where the days are even shorter in winter, you’d notice that lighter colors are welcome. My BIL in Switzerland plans ski vacations to get up where it’s bright, and there aren’t folks cloaked in black there.
      
      Nothing to do with dandruff. More to do with outlook in winter.
      
      I’ve tried to explain to you both why colors (not neutrals) do matter to some potential customers.

    I live in San Francisco and black is the color for pretty much everything all year round! We’re dark and moody that way. Although, I wouldn’t be too sad if I could get it in a nice shade of gray/lavender.

I think she looks very lovely. Clean, love the ease of the ponytail, etc. Will definitely agree with TLo that the scarf could’ve used SOME attention…feels like she was running from event to event with a bag full of accessories in the car. “Where are we?? Target event? Black scarf! GO GO GO!!!”

My only problem with this outfit is the ordinary-ness of it. My co-workers and I wear similar stuff (of the less “impeccable” variety) all the time, and we’re plump gals in our 50s and 60s.

Doesn’t anyone else think it is totally BIZARRE that NM is working in a joint project with Target? What in the world are they doing together????? I assume the Target shoppers are pretty happy with this unholy alliance, and the NM shoppers are looking for somewhere else to shop. Yikes.

By the way, I couldn’t care less about what she is wearing. It is perfect for a funeral. Impeccable, chic and depressing. Happy holidays.

  Given the bang up response to the designer collections (in Atlanta there were near riots for the Missoni), it’s a smart move to do something for the holidays. By having the collections in both stores (so nobody needs to shop away from their comfort zone if they don’t want to), it guarantees high foot traffic for both retailers and the likelihood (as with the Black Friday effect) that folks will walk out with more than they planned.
  
  Target has done generally very well with its designer partnerships and Neiman Marcus needs something fresh. I think that the alliance may actually mean more to NM than Target.

Replying to Kiltdntiltd down the way since my replies don’t ever seem to work—While I don’t disagree with you in theory, I think Target and its focused limited editions of designer ware may limit that traditionally bad idea such as Cardin and Halston. I still have some great Isaac Mizrahi pieces from their first efforts and I scored a few Jason Wu pieces last year. I would never ever own Wu otherwise.

It’s a cute and simple look; I just wish there was another pic without her legs in a twist.
I like the designers contributing some designs for mass market and affordable venues like Target. (although a scarf, – really?)
Having read some other responses; I would like to add that the quality of women’s clothing in general, except at the very top of
the fashion retail business, – is much inferior to the quality of men’s wear. The construction and the fabric are much flimsier for
just about anything made for women; item for item. There are exceptions in the market; here and there.
Also keep in mind that women are expected to wear a larger variety of looks for the workplace or school, or for everyday even;
and that if they don’t change up their wardrobe enough, it doesn’t reflect well for the woman. Men are not expected to have an
expansive closet, they can get by wearing the same stuff routinely. And yet most women are earning less than her male peers;
but still have to fill that expectation somehow – and then wind up with inferior, shorter-lived garments to boot. And add to that;
women’s clothes are MORE expensive than guy’s. It’s a frustrating norm that most women discover when they start purchasing
their own things; usually before leaving high school.
