Let’s get some sausage up in this joint, ladies. Willem Dafoe gives his best face to Another Man magazine. It’s not much in the way of fashion, but that’s one hell of a face for pictures.

Willem Dafoe is featured in the Fall/Winter 2012 Issue of AnOther Man magazine photographed by Willy Vanderperre, styled by styled by creative director Alister Mackie, and shot at the Castello di Torcrescenza in Rome.

  So many actors work too hard to do something “interesting” with their hands, usually wiping their upper lip or scratching something. Dafoe’s hands are connected to whatever is going on in his head – they are part of the moment.

      I wouldn’t use the term “traditionally handsome,” either. Deep creases, the very wide philtrum (that is, the area where the mustache grows), asymmetrical features, and so on–they are not aspects one usually associates with traditional good looks. Yet he’s enthralling to look at and very attractive to me. There are plenty of actors I don’t think of as good looking in the way we usually use that term (Sean Penn, Jeremy Renner, Christopher Walken, Jack Nicholson) that I think nonetheless exude sexuality and masculinity in ways that make them very appealing.

        If you google “young william dafoe” you’ll see his features are traditionally handsome. Strong nose, jaw, cheekbones,eyebrows. Was he pretty? no, traditionally handsome, basically. He’s just old now, and he looks good for an old guy.

  I saw Sean Penn once in ‘real life’ in Malibu – was amazed how different he looks in person (also petite, grey hair), but very penetrating blue eyes. And Ethan Hawke, who I saw on the subway (!) once in NYC many years ago, is one of the best-looking people I’ve ever seen in person. It’s interesting how actors’ looks transform between film/print and reality.

Number 7, where he’s draped in Mrs. O’Hara’s portieres, his face recalls the scarysexy qualities of Charlton Heston in his prime.

I once saw him in a restaurant in Greenwich Village – he had on a watchcap and nothing clothes, out for a Dad Day … and the face he gave me was, “Ah, shit, please don’t fucking recognize me, I’m private here.” It was painful to avert my eyes, but I did. That face.

There was an article in the NYTimes several years ago about the concept of “joli(e)-laid(e).” It focused on women…I’m thinking that if the piece had been about men, Willem Dafoe would’ve been Exhibit A.

These look like photos from back in the day when dramatic poses of actors were in vogue. Back when they sold to people who could only see actors on stage, live, not served up 24-7 on screen & monitor.
And by dramatic, I mean DRAMATIC.

Not to turn this into an “issue” post, but I would LOVE to see an editorial like this one for some of the older famous ladystars, rather than the airbrushed-beyond-recognition spreads we get of Meryl Streep and the like.

He looks amazing, there’s so much character and depth to his face. It just struck me as sad how much a spread like this could not happen for a woman.

A number of years ago Dafoe did an experimental production of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘The Hairy Ape’. Now – labeling anything by O’Neil ‘experimental’ is kind of an oxymoron in itself – but Dafoe really took it outside the lines. I’ve never forgotten it. You know, there are productions and performances that just stay in your mind forever (Merel Streep and Raul Julia’s 1978 ‘Taming of the Shrew’ comes to mind). But Dafoe’s ‘Hairy Ape’? It just stopped me dead. And not just the performances. The whole thing was visually stunning. It truly engaged all the senses. The man’s fabulous. I’ll go see anything he does.
