We think we understand now why Miss Solange wears the sometimes-crazy outfits and likes to sport a ‘fro.

Because when she’s dressed in a more conventional style and straightens her hair, she looks astonishingly like her sister. Seriously. Obviously, we always knew there was a resemblance but we don’t think we ever realized how much they look alike. Put her in a giant, honey-blonde wig, Bey-style, and they’d almost be hard to tell apart.

We like this look a lot, but not a hundred percent. The dress suits her, but either there’s some sort of fit issue in the bodice, or she needed a minute to straighten things out after she got out of the limo. The earrings are really pretty. And while we love those shoes, we think they’re a bit much for the dress. Pair them with something slinky and black and they’d kick all kinds of ass.

What an incredibly beautiful woman! The dress is pretty but there is a problem with the bodice. Perhaps all that is needed is to pull it down since it looks like its riding up. The shoes are too embellished for this dress. I agree with TLo. These beautiful shoes would look incredible with a simple, sleek dress.

She looks lovely and I kind of like the shoes with the dress. They’re both cranked up to the same level of intensity, if that makes sense, so that they kind of cancel each other out and let you look at her face.

    I love the shoes too but I have found that embellished shoes tear my stockings, socks and take down the hems on pants (and I’m only talking mini-embellishments). I just see these getting caught all over the place. But of course no one expects you to run errands in these shoes and I love the fabulousness that is Ms. Solange even when her hair is straightened.

There’s something going on with the whole top of that dress, which is a shame because it’s quite pretty.
I love her eye makeup and although I much prefer her hair natural, I think it looks nice here straightened (or wigged?).

I adore those shoes and agree they should be be worn with something black, restrained, and sexy to feature them.

I think most of the fit issues are temporary, just needing a tug down, and standing with her arms at her sides, rather than oddly forward, as they are, it would look great. And our marvelous hosts are right the shoes, faboo in themselves, are a mite too much with this dress.

Serious question: are black women shorter waisted than white women of the same general sizes?

Background: I compared general sloper sizes for oriental and european and there are some major differences; why wouldn’t there be similar differences for other races. I took a sewing course and there was an Indian lady in the course of my height. The distance from her neck to the top of her arm (where a sleve would go) was three inches. That made me feel like a broad shouldered football fullback (not good.)

Anyway, your thoughts?

    I don’t know where the poster is from…in the UK, conventional usage is “Asian” for South Asian peoples (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and “Oriental,” while offensive in the US, is customarily used to differentiate peoples from East Asia (China, Japan, Korea). This may have changed in the last few years…but it was the standard when I was last in the UK. The first time I heard it, my eyebrows flew up to my hairline, I will admit.

    Asian in my misguided impression would include the entire continent and attached subcontinents. The books that lead me to ask the question are the pattern magic series that have slopers for Japanese women.
    
    I think we may remember when Korto talked about the attribute that her tribe’s women had that distinguished them from other tribes.

  I don’t think you can make those kinds of assumptions any which way aside from the most basic statements (South Asians are on average more petite, etc.) and not sure what you mean by ‘oriental’ unless you sew for vases.

  Considering the diversity of shapes and sizes of women of African descent, I don’t think that can be determined. Similarly, I don’t think you could draw a conclusion about all Asian women because of one Indian woman. Sizes aren’t consistent across continents.

I don’t love the dress; I think the alterations have made it look wonky on her somehow. But it’s still cute, and those are some kickass shoes. I also love the hair, and I love the fact that she’s comfortable going back and forth from ‘fro to straight (which I admit that I’m not comfortable doing, and I’m not ashamed to say that I’m jealous).

  Before I loc’d I liked doing the occasional blow out. The only problem I had was getting my fro back afterwards. The ends always wanted to stay straight and took washing with claryfying shampoo to bounce back from straightening.

    Clarifying shampoo does the trick?! I have relaxed hair, but my sister doesn’t, and she’s always frustrated about her “natural” texture coming back. What shampoo did you use?

      I used suave clarifying shampoo then did an apple cider vinegar rinse. In case your sis doesn’t know 3 parts warm water, 1 part natural apple cider vinegar like Braggs. Then condition. I rarely used any of the expensive products like Miss Jessie’s or Carol’s Daughter. Suave, Aussie & Aveda worked for me. I bought no name shea butter from the health food store and if I wanted curls I used s-curl gel. I only got a blow out maybe 3 times a year.

I think the whole look works (if she tugged the bodice slightly that would be even better). One of the benefits to natural hair is the ability to wear it straight when we feel like it – though I’ve only straightened my hair once in the last year and a half in terror of heat damage!

Would a different foundation (bra) help the bodice area? Love the heels on the shoes- but the embellishments are a bit much for the dress. A stronger pair of earrings and less dynamic footwear would have gotten this closer to a WERQ.

Oh yeah, Solo is all about the differentiation from Bey. It used to be kind of tragic when she was younger and hadn’t found her sartorial voice yet, but she’s coming in to her own and clearly has a more interesting & complex style than her sister. I’m not sure what is going on with the bodice-either is was sewn incorrectly, or it’s on loan and was cut for a long-torso’ed model and Solo had to hike it up to fit her. Love those shoes, but not with this dress.

I think she would have looked awesome styled exactly like the model from the neck down (puff sleeves, knee-highs, et al) and from the neck up, her gorgeous ex-fro. Solange honey, what did you do to your hair? It was your crowning glory!
