  No kidding. I remember when she was young and imperfectly beautiful–and that’s what made her so appealing. Now it’s Botox, bad fake boobs and this increasingly harsh trampy look. It hurts to see it. I know she was never the sharpest of actresses, but she had this really nice likeable quality. Despite the legs, it was never about being a bombshell.
  
  I feel like she doesn’t get the reason for her earlier huge appeal–i.e. that she’d be fun. And, unless she suddenly marries–adopt-o-baby in the next four years if not sooner. Babies want you and don’t care if you gain five pounds and have creases around the eyes.
  
  This kind of spread–trying that hard to look young and hot makes you seem old.

I’m guessing a lot of guys will see this spread (literally and figuratively) and think it’s fantastic, better than playboy. And that’s what she’s going for–and she knows that’s what she’s going to get with Richardson. GQ/Esquire know their demographic–you don’t think Lea Michele’s GQ high school spread wasn’t a big hit with dudes? It’s just sad that Diaz buys into needing to do this to keep her career going.

  She approved, but a large part of me suspects it’s a continued effort to remain in lead roles instead of being shoved into minor friend/mother roles (or getting pushed out of roles completely). So it really doesn’t feel like much of a choice- if a pretty, well-established actress like Diaz still has to submit to quite horrible photoshoots like some unknown b-movie starlet in order to remain relevant, what does it say about women and the power they wield in Hollywood? So yeah, it was her call, but a lot of famous women have to do the same pole dance to maintain their career when men of similar status don’t. And that’s depressing. It’s not sexy, it’s disturbing.

    I disagree. Cameron Diaz has been working in this industry for 20+ years. She makes huge amounts of money per movie, and she’s made a lot of movies. Assuming she’s invested wisely, she is set for life. There are plenty of actresses who do NOT resort to this type of crap to “maintain their career”. While she may do this to continue to get ingenue roles (for which she is too old), she does not need to do this to keep getting jobs.

I suspect she’s saying that she’d be fine adopting and/or that she can have children in her life without being their mother (being an aunt or whatever). I applaud her for that. Everyone has to make their own decision about kids and a woman isn’t broken or a failure if she doesn’t have them, but the gross photos really do undermine the message.

Why does anyone still agree to do shoots with Richardson? There just aren’t that many people whose careers can be enhanced by an air of low rest sleeze, which is all he has to offer.

Which is why I struggle with the philosophical position that being sexually provocative in a manner traditionally held to be demeaning is actually empowering for women. Because while I’m sure that’s true for some women, I think for others it makes them think they are proving something (which they really don’t need to prove) by being sexually provocative in those ways & then leads to the idea that they aren’t truly empowered unless they do so.

Where Ms. Diaz falls in that tortured paragraph, I don’t know.

IMO: She doesn’t have enough booty for some of those poses and overall this strikes me as a rather mechanical, un-sexy exercise.

I think I get what you’re saying, and I completely agree. I’m also really getting sick of this idea that overt sexuality or being sexually provocative is empowering for women, maybe that’s because all my Classics and Ancient History classes have taught me that misogyny is rooted in the idea that a woman’s intrinsic value is in her body as opposed to her mind (like men). From my understanding women have traditionally been considered as more ‘bodily’ (that includes more sexual) whereas men have always had control of the higher faculties, which is an idea that I don’t see being challenged enough. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with sexual empowerment I just wish it would stop being the focus, I want to see women celebrated for their creativity, their intelligence, their talent, in short their minds, not just their fabulous bodies.
