Ruffian Spring 2013 Collection

The world of fashion can be awfully repetitive at times, so it’s notable when someone comes up with a concept off the beaten path. “Williamsburg hipsters go Baroque” fits the bill nicely. The juxtaposition of Chuck Taylors with toile prints, ruffles, and seersucker made for a fun, wearable, unique set of looks. Sometimes, creative efforts need to ask a question no one else would think to ask and “What if Marie Antoinette moved to Brooklyn?” is tantalizing enough to make us ponder for days on the matter.

I’m such a sucker for toile. Some of the items seem a bit widening, especially that searsucker skirt and blue top in the 2nd from the bottom row, but I could see these pieces being mixed with other things and really being versatile and fun and stylish. It’s a great collection. Although the hair pouf on all the models is making me twitch.

At first I didn’t like, but once I started putting my thumb over the models’ heads (that hair and makeup is ridick), my attitude about the clothes did a 180. Cute and stylish. Love. If I were a woman I’d wear just about every piece.

It’s disconcerting to see my draperies (mostly toile) in different and very shiny fabrics being used in sports clothes. It looks as strange as the big chintz prints did for other designers recently.

Now, would MK says “She looks like curtains walking” as a variation on “That looks like her Grandmother’s sofa” or do curtains get a pass?

I love toile, but I am not sure I love THIS toile. May those pink flowered shorts and skirt on either end of the last row … but they look like something I would buy from Lands’ End. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE Lands’ End, but it ain’t exactly “designer.”

It’s just too much shit for me. The Chucks, the toile, the layering, the baby shower colors. I think that’s what it is, this actually looks like baby shower decorations. This is probably my least favorite of the week.

Marie Antoinette from the Sofia Coppola movie moves to Brooklyn, you mean. There were even Chuck Taylors in the movie, nestled between all those especially-designed Blahniks. But it certainly fits the bill.

Ew. Rumpled, shiny pajamas in blah fabrics. I am not a fan of that train-conductor stripe on anyone over the age of four (who isn’t actually a conductor). Reads 80′s suburbia to me, and the shoes are nothing special. The drop-waist white tank dress and toile corset top first-row center are the only things I can see wearing.

Didn’t Sofia Coppola already make this movie?

  Wow, I’m impressed by the Sofia Coppola reference — it’s so on the money. (Does her line, Milk, still exist??) Anyway, I think a lot of these pieces are cute, though some definitely are not, but almost all could work well as separates, i.e. the striped skirt, but not the striped skirt + bralet + jacket.

    That’s true, there are some wearable separates here. The covering-the-models-heads trick suggested above really does make a world of difference. Painfully bad styling.

Are the blue stripes seersucker? WIth all the other ‘upholstery’ images, I saw them as ticking (as in olde fashioned matress covers.)

There’s a video ad (for Glad; it has animals in it) with sound that’s impossible to mute that’s been cropping up. Is it at all possible to remove it from the ad rotation? I wear headphones and it’s jarring and a little painful to have a loud ad suddenly blaring in my ears.

    If they’re using Google AdSense, there should be an option that basically allows you to blocks certain advertisers. Or at least there used to be. It’s been a while since I fussed with it, to be honest.

Oh my gosh, that styling is hideous. They all look like Joe Dirt – mullet, brows, & cheap trucker vibe from the neck up. I had to struggle to look away from their heads to get to the clothes, which are actually pretty interesting.
