I gasped initially when I saw the top but then was really disappointed to see what happens below the waist. I think the dress would have been better as a cocktail dress. I think the shape gets wonky the further it goes down.

      I actually like the length on her in general. What I’m not as thrilled about is the way Marisa’s seems to have more gathering/pleating at the waist. On the model, it’s like a long, clean column. Of course Marisa has a real body and those models are 14 and weigh 60 pounds, so perhaps the shape doesn’t translate well. Otherwise, I love the look.

  I actually don’t agree. I think if it were cocktail length it would be more of a “daytime” look.
  What makes it unusual is that it takes a traditional daytime shape and pattern and upgrades it to red carpet by making it long and applying the appropriate accessories. It’s also important that this was the right kind of red carpet, a late summer movie premiere (it would be too casual for an awards show or a holiday season event.)

Generically, you’re right about the length. But I like this in part simply because it’s not cocktail length and yet, she’s pulling it off. (I give major credit to her hair.) Almost ANYbody can pull off cocktail length.

I kinda love it, too, and she looks so comfortable in it. But am I alone in wishing that it were a shorter length? I feel like it would be better just above the knee rather than as a full-length gown. You could still have the stiffness of the skirt, but somehow the length feels wrong to me.

I agree about the seaming at the bust, which strikes me as awkward. I don’t really see the point of it structurally, but it does alter the design of the fabric, so that might be the point. Otherwise, I think Marisa looks so lovely in this very 60s looking dress.

See, this is why I don’t understand fashion. To me this looks frumpy and lumpy and vaguely like a 1970s hotel room bedspread (although her hair and face look beautiful). I can see disliking BOTH this and the Amy Adams one before it (they both have serious flaws), but I don’t get liking this and disliking the Amy Adams (which seems to be the consensus based on comments).

My opinions are way on the “personal opinion” side of personal the opinion vs. fashion expertise divide.

This appeals to me because I like the color, I find it awesome that (IMO) she’s making a very 70s suburban upscale summer party look work (I think in large part because her hair is somehow balancing the skirt), and I find I’m starting to give extra points to dresses that feature neither tits, ass, nor far upper thigh. Given all that, I just don’t mind that the skirt is awkwardly shaped.

Amy Adams’ whole look (including hair and make up) was, for me, just washed out in color, I found the dress dull and it compounded the dullness by simultaneously imparting zero sex appeal while showing more breast than I could feel comfortable showing without boob tape for security if one actually had to lean forward/down with one’s arms also forward. Somehow, that seems extra-wrong to me!

Maybe someone with a real fashion vocabulary will offer a more general analysis!

Practical me would say it will cut off nicely for a work dress. The skirt would ride better if it were completely interfaced.
Those horizontal darts at front and center could only work for the non-Christine Hendricks chests out there. They work with this fabric.

Very dignified and suitable for a FLOTUS or a diplomat. In fact, our own first lady would probably look splendid in this. I tend to agree with the sentiment that this would look even better as a just-above-the-knee length dress. Thank you for accessorizing, Mz. T. There seems to be a general aversion to jewelry of late, so I’m glad to see some. The hair’s a bit heavy and needs managing. What is that very black mark on her right knuckle? I strongly dislike the skirt, I have to say: a high-waisted and gathered effect, done in a heavy fabric, makes her hips look wider and higher than they are. The effect would’ve been mitigated by a knee-length skirt and/or a contrasting, focus-pulling belt (say, metallic gold?). I love the fabric, too, and want it for an armchair someday. Otherwise, Marisa would be the one to make this work, but it ain’t workin’ here.

This makes a great day dress. This, with a knee-length skirt? Totally awesome. The long skirt weighs it down and turns from “fun pattern” into “upholstery fabric”. The fabric looks stiff and like wants to be a more bell-skirt, but was forced into this length. Also, her makeup looks a little clown-y here, although it could be the lighting. She never ages, does she?

Unlike the runway model’s dress, this one has the print matched in the bodice. Kudos! The colors are nice, but not particularly for her. She can wear vibrant colors and this is a little pale. The style is new (old?) and is a nice relief from the stripper costumes that have been passing as evening wear. However, this reminds me of the dowdy side of the 1960′s. Also, the fabric looks like upholstery fabric. That fabric should be on a sofa, not a dress. It is meh.

I think she looks 95% adorable. My only criticisms – I do agree with those who think this would be WAY cuter as a shorter dress. I think the bottom half of the dress is much to heavy for her, and she would rock this if it were just above the knees. The other criticism is that the overly bright pink blush and lipstick clash with the colors in the dress. I think she’d have done better with warmer tones than cool tones for her makeup.

I love this. It fits beautifully. The centre bust dart is clever and makes the bodice less boxy and the whole thing looks fresh, comfortable and modern.

I can forgive the shoes. They might actually be a gold colour that isn’t photographing well, but if they’re silver, I see what she’s trying to do with the silver and gold tone accessories. It works with the aesthetic (for me, anyway). The dress is unusual, flattering, and just casual enough to be completely appropriate for the event, and Marissa looks great. Hard to believe this is the same woman who once wore massive bell sleeved tops with maribou trim, just to flap her arms in them at award shows.
