Marion Cotillard for Dior Magazine

If there’s a woman alive today who can embody and pay the proper respect to the classic Dior New Look, it’s Marion Cotillard. Which makes her the perfect model for Dior Magazine No. 1, where she expertly channels the playful posing styles of early Mid-Century fashion models. With a little color filtering, these could easily pass for 60+-year-old fashion photos. Enjoy the pretty, kittens.

  I hadn’t thought of that until you called attention to it. However I also had the idea that if the photographer took a multitude of photos, it’s the editor’s call about which one to use. She very well might have had her mouth closed a lot, but they didn’t choose to show those shots. She can’t be blamed for that.

    There is one closed mouth shot, but the rest do seem very much like “hey, look at me, I’m posing!” JLo said somewhere that an open mouth is supposed to translate as “movement.” The problem, of course, is that when you have a half a dozen pictures in a row of the same person with their mouth hanging wide open it just looks kind of silly.

      JLo is probably right. By “movement” I assume she means the model was talking while posing. Which would be strange. I agree it looks silly, but again, I think it was an editorial decision. I don’t like the cover picture, or the bustier picture, but I like the rest and her mouth, whether it’s open or not, is not what I noticed first.

She is an incredibly striking woman, but I’ve begun to notice that she is always a bit dead around the eyes. Even in her films, like she isn’t mentally present in the moment. The clothes look lovely, and they look lovely on her.

  Post-WWII. They would never have used that much fabric during the war years. It was even kind of scandalous immediately after, since rationing was still in effect in a lot of countries.

Not even close. Sorry, but Jean Patchett and Dovima would not pose with their mouth agape like that. And her hands are all wrong. And she has dead eyes. I usually like Marion Cotillard, but there is just no comparison to the models in the 50s. Never has been, never will be.

    If you look at Dovima’s pictures, her mouth isn’t hanging open like these pictures. There is a purpose, as in a smile, or the hint of a smile. In these pictures, sadly, like so many photos taken today, the model’s mouth is hanging open for no real reason. I half expect her tongue to be hanging out. No disrespect intended, and I really do love Marion Cotillard — she’s a genius. But these photos make me sad.

    The open mouth isn’t the problem. It’s the blank stare and the way models now are asked to pose with this vacant look. I expect the photo to be captioned “Whaaaaa?” sometimes, and it’s very unflattering. It just looks really goofy to me. The 50s models posed with every inch of their bodies held in the most elegant poses. I doubt we’ll ever see that style ever duplicated. It’s just too elegant for the majority of girls out there now (myself included).

    Mostly down to it being anchored at the waist I think, so it doesn’t move with her when she raises her arm. Dior from that era had serious structure. But hell, it’s the Bar jacket – who needs to lift your arms!

Y’know looking at these again, it’s just so wonderful seeing these classic styles looking so good. Especially something as iconic as the bar suit. The amazing structure and deceptive simplicity of that jacket has always fascinated me. How I’d love a proper look at it’s insides.

The Bar! My aunt, who was one of those Italian women who could look at an article of clothing and make a pattern, knocked off that suit in 1948 for my mother. I have the photos; it was a incredible job.
