Marc Jacobs Spring 2013 Collection

The very best thing about Marc Jacobs is that you never know what he’s going to do from one season to the next; where and when he’s going to pull inspiration from and then reinterpret in his own Marc Jacobs-y kind of way. For this collection it was Op Art madness as pseudo- Edie Sedgwicks and Peggy Moffitts stomped down the runway in eye-popping bold graphic prints and stripes, sporting Cleopatra eyes and scalloped hems with high, ruffled collars. It was, as it always is with Marc, a treat for the eyes.

There are certainly several cool, beautiful and interesting pieces and I love the collection as a whole, but those uber – dropped waists are hideous.

All I can picture from that dress at the very top is Ursula from The Little Mermaid. I am also wondering if he got permission to use Mickey Mouse – Disney gets cray cray about that kind of stuff…

  Trademark law is one of my things, so yes, he certainly got a license from Disney to use Mickey. He’s also likely paying a pretty hefty percentage of his sales receipts from that top to Disney. They’re barracudas when it comes to licensing, almost as bad as the Olympics police.

The low lying skirts have me rolling on the floor, holding my sides laughing. The models look like they were pantsed (skirted?) just before they walked out. Pretty funny stuff.

Uh, no. I don’t want to see anyone’s pubic bones unless I’m bumpin’ uglies with them. That first dress, in the large photo, looks as though it’s made from old lawn chair webbing. And the rest is just too silly for words.

I am loving all of the stripes. However, the way the skirts are fitting is giving me flashbacks to that time 6 years ago when I lost weight and couldn’t afford to update my wardrobe right away to reflect that.

Oh WOW. Whatever you may have to say about whether or not you like his work, one thing remains clear. He is massively creative. Some of this is utterly unwearable, even for the models, but it is undeniably arresting to look at. Some of it is technically jaw dropping, as well. The skirts with the sheer interiors to their pleats, would require masterclass handling to render as they do.

The closest things I can see are the dresses on the bottom row, which I don’t think are actually pleated, but maybe I missed something.

    Not rude at all, Edward. The very first dress, and the left, and right hand dresses in the final row, are all using that technique. It is true that the sheer interior has not been pressed or stiffened in any way, so it IS tough to tell.

      After looking at it up close, I guess I can see some of the pleating of the sheer material. In all honestly, it’s so subtle that it looks like just a sheer underskirt with the skirt panels attached to it.

    I agree! I love strong graphic statements, and these are all appealing if for no other reason. For me, the only real fail, is the dropped waited skirt idea. From an intellectual standpoint, I get what he’s doing, but it is probably un-sellable, even at the highest level.

    And that is one of the reasons I have been such a fan of Marc Jacobs from the start. I had the great good fortune to see the huge retrospective exhibit of his work for Louis Vuitton at the Musee’ Des Artes Decoratif, in Paris, this Spring, and I was utterly gobsmacked by the relentless creativity on display.

I think some of these looks would be well suited for the people who wear vintage as part of their public persona *Lana Del Rey*, but for the average person, I really don’t see much that would work.

I liked this collection, but it seems like there’s a little too much unnecessary skin (the midriffs). I liked the piece at the very top, as well as middle, second-to-last row, with the striped shirt and houndstooth skirt.

wow, I am not usually liking Marc Jacobs but I love these stripes. Obv the torso skirts and v short skirts are editorial fodder and the dress with the bodice frill is reminding me of that PR designer, Raul? Vindication, heh.

A handful of these are intriguing, but seriously … you’d HAVE to have the dimensions of a runway model to wear 95% of this collection. These designs don’t work at all unless you’re: very slender, but of course; at least 5’9″; and have long, long legs. You miss one of those elements and Marc Jacobs is not for you.

I like a lot of this. Especially the stripe-y stuff & the giant ruffled collars. I’ve been watching Julia in reruns and those ruffly collars remind me of stuff she would wear for a date since they were always trying to marry her off on that show. The only thing I’m not real crazy about is how low some some of those skirts sit on the models hips. Hopefully that’s a look that will be left on the runway.

As is often the case with Marc, I enjoy looking at this in the context of the runway, but see precious few items I can imagine liking in a different atmosphere. Also: I pray to god that having skirts hang off your hips doesn’t become fashionable. It looks completely ridiculous.

Overall I REALLY like this (a sucker for black and white, me)…but count me out on super-low-rise skirts and baby-doll pajamas as daywear.

I love pretty much everything in the last four rows, and I love that gradated plaid coat near the top.

As a spectacle goes I am sure it was very exciting. As a collection that will actually make it to a retail floor…it’s not going to happen! The bare midriffs and low slung skirts…slipping off the models hip bones…have a white trash element to them. The wide stripes will be passable on maybe .01 percent of the female population world wide, if that. Then there is the dumpy middle group with the stiff rufles and bibs…ouch!
But not to worry…the flock of designer fashion victim sheep will gobble up all the accessorie tonnage being shipped to stores…therefore allowing Marc jacobs to continue his trip down Fugly Lane next season.

I saw some other pictures of this collection and was intrigued, and I believe you that it was “a treat” live, but in these photos it seems intellectual and kind of repellent. In particular the exploration of the limits of the pubic region (how public the pubic?) is pretty cold. The solid- color sateen (?) clothes look to me wrinkly and clumsy, home-ec class rather than couture.

As an old ladyboy my opinion is hardly weighty…
From season to season, era to era Chanel to McQueen, Karan to Jacobs it’s more apparent in fashion who’s dressing women and who’s merely fantasizing stick figures. From one you buy the clothes and wear them from time to time…with the other you look at the editorials and get an idea about a neckline, a fabric, or the use of accessories. Each has their interest but, for me, the questions is: ”Where could I wear that?” not “Who would wear that?”

This may be my favorite jacobs collection. He may be an attention whoring celebu-shit but he knows what the hell he’s doing and he does not give a shit about trends. He IS a designer. Nor some reductive half-assed tweak someone else’s or last years looks – he is an authentic real deal fashion designer.
