Also, the dress is shorter on the model and the front split is more pronounced (maybe that’s just the lighting), so it’s a little bit closer to blouse territory. Whereas, the one Emma is wearing could very easily be worn as just a dress.

I’m not a fan of dresses over pants, but that is how the designer did it and it’s Emma Watson. I can forgive her just about anything. I’m not really liking the look all that much, the more I look at it, but her face and hair look so great that I can’t give her an out. It’s a very, very tiny in, but only just and only if she promises never to wear that outfit again.

I’m with you boys on this one. Out. The top looks like its too low on her, the pants don’t quite fit her, (I think), because the way they are cropped on the model takes them above the ankle. But overall, I’m in agreement about the pants and skirts combo notion. I have only seen it work well, in certain ethnic dress. But perhaps in those cases I accept it since it is traditional for that group of people.

OUT. It might have hit acceptable–in a fancy-smock over pants way–if they were in contrasting colors. This looks like, “Here are my shoulders, floating in space.” Being the same color reinforces the idea that these are two garments that aren’t related to each other, like the house was on fire and she grabbed the nearest bottom cover and top cover she could get her hands on. On the model this is so very 1960s Dior and I love it. (Late to the party, but I just hopped on the “Mad Men” bus and I’m enthralled.) This is also the era in which I grew up, so I have great nostalgia for styles of the early 1960s. Unfortunately this is a fail on Emma because the pants are just pants. They absolutely need to be cigarette pants, ie ankle-length for the reference to be successful. It’s really only a matter of a few inches, but those inches are everything with a look like this. I really want to give this a thumbs up but may have talked myself out of it. I actually surprised myself by liking this on the model, though I think it would be fiercer if the skirt was less flared. But on Em, first of all: maybe it’s the lighting but the blacks don’t look the same color, which is an OCD trigger! I was going to say that I am not a fan of dresses over pants, but I distinctly remember wearing some short peasant dresses over jeans in my college days. So I guess I’d be a liar. Out. She needs a stylist really badly. The hair is mousy and limp. The jewelry should be bold for that get-up, and she is wearing a pendant that is almost invisible. Her makeup is daytime, and this outfit is supposd to be ultimate sophistication. Her tan lines are showing on her chest. She looks like a mousy teenager trying on her mom’s cocktail outfit.

Now, to the outfit: It might be passable as a Holly Go Lightly knock off if the skirt was about 6 inches shorter, you know, just clearing the crotch area. Then it would be fun in that whimsical Audry Hepburn way. But, she would need to step up her game, as described above, to pull it off.

She is not little Hermione anymore. She needs to be up to the standard of the Red Carpet when she is there. As I said before, she has the money, the power and the access to topnotch fashions and styling. She is not a poor starlet, or singer who just weaseled her way up to this point and really cannot afford the help to do it right. She should do better.

The dresslum is too long; I like it on the model. Little people should not borrow clothes that belong on big people, or since ther are so many smaller stars the houses should make petite versions. The same issue happened yesterday with Natalie Portman; the dress was magnif, but too long on her teensy frame.

IN—yes the “dress” should be shorter and I would tend to lean toward TLo’s usual “no” on dress with pants, but I think this is sharp as well—classic yet fashion forward, sophisticated, elegant. I must depart from you on this one, Favorite Gay Uncles. It DOES get off the pot, in that you can plainly see that the pants are a major part of the look. What scratches my chalkboard are outfits where the pants are coyly hidden away under a dust ruffle until the wearer does some dramatic hand move to get the fabric out of the way. I love this. Getting the dress over pants thing right is all about balancing proportions, which is what has gone wrong here. Pants are too long (and baggy) and the skirt needed to be shorter. Even if that was all taken care of, we’d then have to deal with the rather lame Tiffany’s necklace, which in my mind is this outfit’s worst offender. She’s still adorable, but OUT all the same.
