Gwynnie takes a pretty great picture for the cover of InStyle.

Gwyneth Paltrow covers the October 2012 issue of InStyle magazine photographed by Giampaolo Sgura in a Diane von Furstenberg jumpsuit paired with Fred Leighton earrings and Vhernier bracelets.

And once she’s lured us inside with her winning smile and windswept hair, she proceeds to remind us all why we can’t stand her:

What she’s learned at 40: “I’m taking stock and really looking at everything. I’m trying to accept myself. There’s a Rumi poem, “The Guest House,” about welcoming in all aspects of yourself: The dark, the light, the jealous, the happy. Let them all in. But know that you’re not defined by any single one of them. I’ve become much more serious after experiencing all the ups and downs of life—heartbreak, the death of people I love…These days I feel pretty grounded.”

Why she keeps working so hard: “I’m hard on myself, so I’m working on shifting perspective toward self-acceptance, with all my flaws and weaknesses. The positive thing that drives me is a curiosity and momentum. The negative is a need to validate myself or feel special.”

On her kids: “When Apple was born, she had the hugest blue eyes. I looked into them, and she was looking at me, and I felt like, You are here to teach me everything. After [Moses] was born I had postpartum depression. It was a difficult time, and because of that I believe I have an extra empathy for him, and he for me.”

On her diet: “I was very strict for a while. I was macrobiotic for a couple of years, then I got pregnant and just ate ice cream. What I’ve learned is I want to enjoy my life, and food is a big part of it. I love to cook and feed people. I cook every day. I [indulge] but I don’t like sweets. My indulging is a fresh baguette with cheese and a glass of red wine or French fries and fried zucchini. Or a turkey burger.”

“My indulging is a fresh baguette with cheese and a glass of red wine.” Oh please. Not that there’s anything wrong with a baguette, some cheese and a glass of wine. In fact, it sounds lovely right now and that scares us because we’re not even close to lunchtime and we’re fantasizing about a glass of wine. Our point is, it’s such a studied thing to say. Maybe it really is her favorite indulgence, but we can’t help shaking the idea that she worked very hard to make it her favorite indulgence just so she could say so in an interview. Because she’d rather die than admit her favorite indulgence is a greasy pizza or going through the McDonald’s drivethru and stinking up her car for weeks afterward just because she had a hankering for a Quarter Pounder with a side of McNuggets.

    But I think she IS being honest. I totally believe that to maintain her figure she has to mostly eat lettuce and soy protein, or something, and that a baguette, cheese, and wine ARE her indulgence. If she told me she liked to rock out with a burrito the size of her head, I flat-out would not believe her.

      I was thinking the same thing. I hope I’m not being insufferable when I say that a baguette and cheese sounds really good. I just don’t go for the fast-food-fried stuff. Although I never say no to hot fudge sundaes.
      
      I don’t get all the hate for her. Seems to me there are far greater douches in Hollywood who’ve clawed their way to fame *cough Kardashian cough* and who don’t have an Oscar to their name. She does seem to actually work.

        I completely agree. She can be a bit pretentious, but she is a child of the industry who grew up fairly privileged, so it’s expected. If you watch her Spanish food tour with Mario Batali (it was on PBS a few years ago, highly recommend) you see that she really adores and knows GOOD food–and has a sense of humor.
        
        I’d rather hang out with her than a non-working famewhore any day. I don’t think she deserved the Oscar, but her time on Glee and Iron Man totally make up for it.

        Why, just the other night I read that she is going to be a spokesperson for Max Factor Cosmetics. That’s truly laughable. And I’ve just seen her in catalog spreads for J.Crew. And she’s repping Coach now, and she used to rep Tod’s, and then of course there was Estee Lauder, plus she does that clothing line for some Scandinavian company, plus she is the face for a line of wristwatches. It just goes on and on. The woman who complained about being so bothered by her fame that she had to move to London keeps selling herself to anyone who will use her. That’s our Gwynnie.

    Well, exactly. For the last few months I’ve been trying to follow an “anti-cancer diet,” a sort of modified version of a macrobiotic diet, and I can tell you that a baguette, cheese, and wine are a huge indulgence. One I would love to have right now!

    Yes, her indulgences sound fairly normal to me for a woman her age who is trying to maintain her weight/appearance close to where it was in her early 20s. In my teens I used to debate all morning whether my single *weekly* fast food indulgence would be small fries or a small milk shake for lunch. [as in, that would be the entire lunch, with maybe an unsweetened iced tea.]
    
    Fortunately, my disordered thinking never crossed the line into a full-fledged eating disorder and for that I will eternally be grateful.
    
    That mac and cheese sounds WONDERFUL. My favorite indulgence is red wine plus as many potatoes as I want – the potatoes in any one of a variety of forms, all of which include butter or cheese and most of which include onions.

      There was a time when I was thin enough that my hip bones jutted out, and i would look at myself in the mirror, and think, “a couple of pounds, and I’ll be fine” I didn’t realize till years later how desperately close to a real problem I came.         I actively tried to develop an eating disorder when I was in high school and told constantly that my size 10 was fat. But since I have no gag reflex and enough of a survival instinct not to be able to give up eating I never managed it. Then I got out of there and discovered that by most of the world’s standard I looked freaking amazing.

        I think for a lot of girls it becomes a question of, “Well, I can feel like I’m constantly struggling to lose weight and failing; or, if I had an eating disorder, I could feel like I’m constantly struggling not to lose TOO MUCH weight and failing. It’d be a struggle either way, but at least with the ED I’d be pretty and struggling.” Obviously a couple of huge questionable assumptions in there, but I think that’s what it boils down to. High school girls often don’t feel like there’s a “normal” they can “just be”. They’re always going to feel like there’s something wrong with them, but some problems are “prettier” than others.

        I did the same thing in high school. I genuinely was overweight (still am, though I’ve lost a bunch since getting to college and walking everywhere) but when you’re told, “You need to lose 50 pounds ASAP” then going the not eating route seems like the fastest, easiest way to do it. I never managed a full on disorder, though it fucked up my relationship with food completely, but I’m still holding a tiny bit of a grudge against my father for starting the whole thing. (And being told things like, “eating less is always good” really didn’t help matters.)

        As a size 10/12, 5’8″, leggy and busty lass in high school, I thought I was fat. Which maybe I was compared to my shorter and/or smaller and flat-chested friends. But I look back at those pictures of me in my teens and twenties and think, “Dammit! I should have dressed sluttier when I had the body for it!”

        It’s a problem that plagues most young girls, not just the curvier variety.
        
        In high school, I was a size 2. A friend of mine would constantly make fun of my small chest and overall thinness. If I ever got any attention, she would respond with “at least I have boobs” or something to that effect. I made myself eat more so I could put on a little weight, eventually going up to a size 4. My friend’s reaction? “Uh, you are starting to look a little chunky.”

      I know someone whose marriage really suffered for exactly that reason. She is a recovered (recovering?) anorexic and while she maintains a normal or slightly overweight body now, eating fatty food she does not enjoy puts her into a state somewhere between resentment and a panic attack. Her husband prided himself on his cooking, which was centered around greasy, overcooked meat and greasy starches. He was baffled and insulted that she didn’t want to eat what he cooked and never really “got” her explanations. Took them years to reach detente.

      My god, yes. I have a target weight (it’s healthily in the middle of my BMI, thanks) and to maintain that weight, I need to be careful about what I eat. That’s just the way it is; I don’t need to starve myself or anything, but if I’m not thoughtful about my intake, I gain weight. There’s a male coworker/superior I work with who loves to take people out to dinner and push appetizers, entrees, desserts on everyone in restaurant portion sizes. It comes from a very friendly place for him – food makes people happy! – and I appreciate that but damn is it hard to deal with. I’m like, “Dude! I had a meal plan for this week! A meal plan I liked!”

        As it happens, once I hit the wrong side of 40 I started to have trouble with dairy AND too much oil. That means no cheese, no milk, nothing fried. It’s not as bad as you think, but I wouldn’t call it a ton of fun, either. Like Gwyneth, my sophisticated indulgence is a baguette and wine (all those empty carbs, mmmmm…). Unlike Gwyneth, my unsophisticated indulgence is Mamba (first cousin to Starburst), or taffy, or candy corn. If I was trying to sound likable in an interview, you can bet I’d be extolling the virtues of candy, not baguettes!

      6 oz each of the cheeses, except for the Bleu, just 2 of that. Roughly shred them, and mix them together.
      2 large eggs and 2 1/2 cups of milk, add salt and pepper to taste, whisk it till its frothy. Alternate layers of macaroni, and cheese mixture, pouring some of the liquid over each layer as your progress, till your 13×9 pan is full. Bake at 325 covered for 30 minutes. uncover and bake another 15. Serves 2 (just kidding)

  That’s less “indulgence” and more “suicide attempt” lol. When I indulge, I go to my favorite Chinese restaurant with my sister and we order so much food they sometimes deliberately do not bring us everything we ordered. And then we eat leftovers for the next two days. I’m always surprised the amount of food we buy doesn’t last longer.
  
  If she was macrobiotic, then yeah, that totally is an indulgence. White bread? A dairy product? And alcohol? Eating that kinda stuff is not exactly conducive to maintaining a trim figure. You can make sinfully delicious brownies with more nutritional value than little meal.
  
  She is wildly aggravating because yes, everything she says is so rehearsed. She is utterly artificial. I do believe what she says is true but you know damn well she knew what the questions would be.

    I am — it’s a lot harder to fill an emotional void with health food, so you have to be awesome at it. I make the best red sauce you will ever taste and it is entirely sugar free (why does anyone do this?) and oil free. The key is to use herbs like basil if you need extra sweetness and puree some of the veggies to give it extra smoothness (baby food is awesome for that, btw.)

There’s a place in Philly with an outpost near where I live right outside the city that serves gravy fries…the entire menu consists of hot roast beef sandwich or hot pork sandwich, fries alone, w cheese or gravy. My impression of Gwyneth is that she is controlling and perfectionistic. I think the baguette and wine really is indulgent for her (and sounds yummy). I think you can’t be 40 and that thin without some serious food restriction. I had read she had post-partum depression with her son – not surprising since a perfectionist personality often has trouble adjusting to motherhood (which is quite imperfect). I’m actually quite sympathetic to her in that respect, being a mom is hard. But yeah, she doesn’t always come across well in interviews when she talks like this.

Pretty much sums her up! I’ve come to kind of like that about her, though. She is certainly selling a look and lifestyle that take hard work and discipline to maintain (and of course, also money) but at least she doesn’t seem to be one of those stars who feels compelled to pretend that she’s totally natural and it’s all just so easy (except when people are haters!) and she eats whatever she wants. Every line of that interview speaks to an attitude of constantly working on and adjusting herself. That lifestyle would suck for lots of people, but at least she’s not pretending it’s not work.

Nailed it. So well put. The rare sincerity you get in these articles always comes through and this is NOT it. And you don’t like sweets? I have met people who don’t like chocolate but they still like sweets. Come on Gwynie…you know you want a big gooey brownie made with real butter and dare I say, a few preservatives. It’s ok to say it!
