Is it true your first professional on-camera work was a Fruit of the Loom commercial?
I remember something to do with Fruit of the Loom, but I don’t think I got that. I did a Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks. And I did a Burger King with Jeff Daniels. Or was it Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks with Jeff Daniels? That was ’77.

What is the first movie that you recall?
King Kong. The Wizard of Oz was a big one. I remember Caged, these women in prison. I liked that one. But I wasn’t a movie buff. Never thought about the movies. When I was in my teens, it was movies like Shaft or Superfly. I wanted to be like those guys. But I never thought about being an actor, ever. I wanted to be Jim Brown or Gale Sayers, not Sidney Poitier. When I started acting, there weren’t any big black movie stars. There was a little Billy Dee Williams and some Richard Pryor. That was it.

If you had one thing to say to African-American readers of GQ, what would you say?
Take responsibility. One of the things that saddens me the most about my people is fathers that don’t take care of their sons and daughters. And you can’t blame that on The Man or getting frisked. Take responsibility. Look in the mirror and say, “What can I do better?” There is opportunity; you can make it. Whatever it is that you choose, be the best at it. You have an African-American president. You can do it. But take responsibility. Put your slippers way under your bed so when you get up in the morning, you have to get on your knees to find them. And while you’re down there, start your day with prayer. Ask for wisdom. Ask for understanding. I’m not telling you what religion to be, but work on your spirit. You know, mind, body, and spirit. Imagine—work the brain muscle. Keep the body in tune—it’s your temple. All things in moderation. Continue to search. That’s the best part of life for me—continue to try to be the best man.

    Personally, I think “take responsibility” and “try to be the best you can” sounds like some pretty solid words of wisdom.

      Wisdom, maybe; actual actionable advice, no. His statement sounds to me more like the continuing tendency in America to see poverty as immoral. Poverty is the cause of the dysfunction, not the end result. Giving people advice that amounts to ‘try harder’ is not helpful, it’s condescending bs.

    He doesn’t say that to be a good parent you need to feed your kids organic food, send them to private school, or keep them safe in a Volvo. His advice–whether you agree with it or not–seems to me to be fairly disassociated with wealth and privilege.
    
    So what struck you the wrong way? I’m truly curious–not trying to be confrontational.

      I agree – his advice had nothing to do with wealth or privledge. And I liked that he didn’t specify a religion – not Christian, not scientology, Muslim etc.

        Looking to religion to make you a better person- ok fine maybe that can work for some people. Personally, I haven’t seen it work, since a lot of the religious people I know are judgmental slobs trying to make ends meet just like everybody else. This observation holds whether they worship Jesus, Allah Yahweh or Buddha.
        
        Worship might make you feel better about yourself, but it won’t make you rich, and it won’t help you get a job.

      I’ll post the same as I said above- this is not actual actionable advice. It’s not ‘tap into your network of friends to look for new opportunities for jobs’. It’s not ‘ask people who are doing the things you want to do with your life how they got to where they are and ask them to mentor you’. It’s essentially ‘just try really really hard and click your heels together and wish upon a star that the big white Jesus in the sky will make you a better person and then maybe you will magically become virtuous enough that you too can be rich’.
      
      Poverty is not a moral condition, it’s economics. Jesus will not help. The poorest people I know spend more time on their knees than anybody else I’ve ever met. It does not help them get a job.

      I know this is two days ago but I’m catching up on one of my favorite blogs after moving. I also read the comments like lovelyivy, which is that it’s a rich guy being a little condescending. There’s plenty of information linking poor parenting and low socioeconomic status, and that raising your socioeconomic status is getting harder. A few years ago the NYT had a great article about how when a factory shuts down and the neighborhood unemployment rate rises dramatically, you can see the neighborhoods and families just fall apart. I tried to find it but my google-fu is failing me. Also, in this election season, “responsibility” has certain connotations and ideas that maybe it wouldn’t ordinarily have.

    i am super late to this conversation but i will say this – that quote reminded me a lot of what will smith said on oprah after pres. obama first got elected. he said now black communities cant blame anyone else (by extension any institutions or socioeconomic issues) for their troubles, because a black man made it to the white house.
    
    it can come across as a super out of touch way of thinking and really condescending to many different people, including different races and different classes. im not saying thats what denzel meant, but it stinks of that mentality.

There are very few celebrities I would have any interest in meeting…really meeting, as in having a few minutes to actually chat and not just faint at their feet while they’re signing their name to some part of my anatomy… because celebrity status by itself just doesn’t do it for me. But for those rare celebrities who come across as not only as hot as all get out, which Denzel definitely qualifies, but who also appear to be intelligently, genuinely thoughtful about life, those are the famous folks I’d stand in line for a chance to meet them in person. Of course, given Denzel’s exquisite hotness, I’d probably only manage to faint at his feet anyway…

I remember catching his movie Deja Vu on television a few years ago, and really marveling at how beautifully Denzel played some of the quiet scenes where his character was looking back into the past. While it wasn’t high art, I think that movie was underrated. It also had one of the cleverest car chases I’ve seen in a long time.

No, you were referring to the people who think his advice is B.S. while in conversation with the one person who said his advice is B.S. A passive-aggressive insult along the lines of a passive-aggressive apology like “I apologize if you read it that way.”
