Badgley Mischka Spring 2013 Collection

People toss around the phrase “old Hollywood glamour” a lot, and it’s certainly always applied to the Badgley Mischka aesthetic, but with this collection, they took the term to literal levels. The inspiration comes from the 1936 film version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and offers up a succession of glittering, floral, embroidered fantasy-based fairy looks dripping with, of course, glamour of the old Hollywood variety.

Oooo, am I first?

First two rows, the color screamed calamine lotion to me. It got better as it went along. I actually like most of the clothes, but not that particular pink.

    We’ve been deleting all Project Runway-related comments in non-PR-related comments section (especially the Fashion Week posts) because that kind of stuff tends to get out of hand at this time of year and we’ve worked very hard to make this site much more than a Project Runway fansite. It seemed impossible that people weren’t going to mention Ven once they saw the roses in this collection, so we knew we’d have to let it go for this one. But part of the reason we tend to put the kibosh on these convos is because inevitably, someone will erroneously float the idea that the designer being featured somehow ripped off a Project Runway contestant.
    
    Kittens, to be blunt, that’s nuts. And it’s a bit of a slap in the face to the designers being discussed. Ven did not invent fabric roses, just like Leanne didn’t invent petal pleats, and Christian didn’t invent puffy sleeves and Rami didn’t invent draping. Badgley and Mischka, whatever else one might think of them, are well-established designers with a long brand history behind them. Even if you wanted to put forth the idea that they’re stealing ideas from a cable TV reality competition in its tenth season, the timing just doesn’t work. All runway collections from this past Fashion Week have been in the planning and designing for months. There’s no way Badgley Mischka saw one of Ven’s fabric roses on TV less than two months ago and planned their collection around them.

I don’t love all of these, but that first gown and the gown on the left in the second row are made from stunning fabrics. Nothing groundbreaking in the shapes, but the fabrics—beauties.

Dress 1: someone mentioned Charles Rennie Mackitosh recently: that’s a frank theft from one of his tapestries. Dress 4 is a detail from a Morris and Company wallpaper, and no, I’m not complaining. I’m hoping there’s a general run to more Arts and Crafts designs (inspired-by or frank theft, I don’t care, I’m easy), so the textiles might be available without special ordering at a big price.

I literally sat up in my chair when I saw the print on that first gown. Lovely collection. I was trying to think of who might be able to wear that blue gown with the floral appliqué and drape at the neck without looking completely twee. Mia Wasikowska? Milla Jovovich would look stunning in the gown to the right of it. The whole thing makes me want to play dress-up with some Hollywood dollies.

Other than a few peek-a-boobs and a Ven rose or two, the word that comes to mind is: ladylike. Sadly, not a word you hear often anymore, or a concept you see in practice much any more, but lovely, nonetheless.

All very lovely, nothing I can picture myself in (other than the skirt in look 3 in row 3 and maybe the first dress in row 8), but I can see many many elements that can be called upon and simplified and put into a lower end line.
