Michelle Dockery for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine
Well, darlings, the press ramp-up to what is sure to become a media juggernaut has begun. Season three of Downton Abbey (now with added Shirley MacLaine flavor crystals) is heading the world’s way and all the prettier cast members are going to get lots and lots of pictures taken and dresses to wear as part of the poledance. You won’t hear us complaining.

On auditioning for the part of Lady Mary Crawley: “Until then I’d played much more vulnerable parts, but I remember coming out of the audition, and Dan Stevens was in the waiting room. I said, ‘Who are you up for?’ and he said, ‘Matthew.’ I walked out and thought, Oh, that could work.”

We got to see and talk briefly with Michelle last December, during a press event for season 2 of the show, and we have to tell you, the lady has presence. With a third of the cast up on stage along side her, it was impossible to take your eyes off her. She’s actually prettier in person. Part of the reason for that is her undeveloped skills as a model. She’s getting much better at it – and in fact, this editorial is probably her best yet – but you can tell such things didn’t come naturally to her, not earlier in her career, anyway. But she’s a charismatic actress with great bone structure, a long, thin body, and world-class face-giving skills. She’s better at this than 90% of her colleagues, but if she works at it, she could be “Face of Lancôme” good.
