ELLE Sweden: Dreams and Reality

Darlings, as the days start to get a little shorter, are you feeling all autumnal and shit? Or are you doing everything you can to pretend that summer will last forever and you will always be exactly as young as you are right now?

There are two types of people: those who make simplistic classifications and those who don’t. Since we’re of the former persuasion, allow us to say that there are two types of people: those who greet the fall by noting the sanctity and brevity of life and respond by indulging in hearth and home; who greet the changing of seasons with a shudder of delight as they light another candle and wrap themselves in their favorite sweaters and plan their next hayride or pumpkin scone (even if they live in the tropics or the desert). Then there are those who see autumn as one big deathfest, announcing with every sight, sound, and smell that everything is dying or going to sleep and that a long, dark, bitter winter is ahead of them; a prelude of the grave to come. The former are good friends to hit up for Halloween costumes but the latter make better drinking buddies.

Anyway, no matter what your response is to the inevitable shortening of the days, we’re thinking this golden-tinged editorial of pretty might be just the way to end your day.

So which kind are you? The Yankee-Candle-and-pumpkins type or the “Life is horribly BRIEF and DARK. I need SEX and STIMULANTS right NOW.” type?

Some of these are really beautiful. I can’t wait to bust out my fall wardrobe. I’ll pass on the Yankee Candles AND the pumpkin scones, but give me a nice warm mug of spiced apple cider, and it’s ON.

I love the fall. Here in Northern California, the weather is very similar to spring, only without any frickin’ allergies. Plus, I don’t have to shave my legs so often and can wear more of my hats without looking out of season.

  I thought the same. John Millais, specifically. These have got a standing-up Ophelia thing going on. And I’m the latter, too. I like a crisp breeze now and then, but as an unfortunate sufferer of S.A.D., the whole season just gets lost in bitter anticipation of the dead months to come. I wish I could not think about it, but there it is. And I DO make a better drinking buddy, all year long.

Can we be both? I adore the cooler temperatures, the colours, and the chance to bust out the sweaters and pencil skirts, but I also rage at the dying of the light. This is why Spring rules all: it’s not insufferably hot, but the days are getting *longer*.

I love fall. It means I can wear bulky sweaters and jeans without feeling too self-conscious. It means I can drink with gay abandon in front of bonfires. It means I can iron pretty leaves between layers of waxed paper (I have small kids – I can still get away with doing that). I can pretend that I can wear woolen clothing without clawing my skin off. It’s not cold enough to piss me off, it’s not hot enough to piss me off, it’s pretty much perfect. But mostly? The drinking around bonfires.

I wish summer would never end, but I am quite fond of sweaters, Halloween, and Yankee Candle. Jack’o'lanterns are the shit. It’s winter that’s the morbid, endless season of death. This is a lovely editorial. I like how they’ve played with the light and colors to give it an ethereal feeling.

Season changing for me mostly means clothing and alcohol. As in short to long sleeved shirts, socks and jackets and from frozen margaritas, Corona and Hoogarden to deeper beers and whiskey drinks. Also from getting high by the fire pit outside to getting high by the fireplace inside. I hate all scented candles. I like pumpkins. And cooking of course. Grilling and salads and homemade sorbets turn into braised meats and apple pies and soups. Its been so damn hot this summer I longingly look forward to something a bit cooler. Although deep winter sucks. Older I get and the more arthritis I get, winter is harder and harder. I’m done.

  i’m a bit of both types, and like you, getting older. my thought was rather than wanting to “always stay as young as i am”
  but rather “wanting be no older than i already am. now that i live where it snows, the changing seasons are more intriguing. in fall, the winds come, the cottonwoods turn golden and ten bare, the birds leave except for my ravens, and in november, everything is still and silent. waiting for the snow. weirdly, the snow didn’t come until march last year (excepting a few flurries) and that was a bit unnerving. autumnus interruptus.

I am TOTALLY the second type. I think it’s partially my seasonal affect disorder that I get every year, and partially the associated emotions of going back to school, even though I don’t do that anymore, because I LOATHED elementary, middle and high school. (College a great deal less, but there was still that associated sadness.)

That said, I am looking forward to drinking hot tea and taking long evening baths again. Plus my cats get cuddlier with the cooler weather, which is super nice.

I choose both, together or by turns – possibly affected by the weather, as a bright, sunny autumn is a very different thing from a cold, rainy autumn.

As for the editorial… yes, it’s very pretty, but I kept wanting to tell the mode to close her mouth, and the fact that I noticed that more than the clothing says – well, probably that I’m not their target audience!

I think I’m the latter type and as such, I have to say it’s such a relief to hear that the days are getting shorter in the northern hemisphere. Being in Australia I’m pretty much fed up with the winter and really need to start shedding some of these layers of clothes!

I’m definitely the I need sex and stimulants right now type. But that has nothing to do with the weather.

I live in Texas, so ‘fall’ means it’ll be 80 in the day and 65 at night, and cozy sweaters are not in the picture. We do hayrides, but half the time we can wear shorts. These fall ads are really winter ads for around here.

Waah! The end of summer makes me want to cry, nash my teeth, moan and drink. (so I’m definitely in the second group) Fall is lovely, if too darn short and winter is usually the pits.
