Vogue Germany: Glory Days

Before we dive headfirst into the screaming insanity of another season of Project Runway, let’s take a deep breath and center ourselves with a dash of fabulously chic B&W NYC glam in the old-school manner. With just a splash of cute sailors. What’s not to love? Light some Chanel No. 5 incense, do some chanting, and let the pretty wash away the cares of your day.

  I agree, most of them do look better shot like that, which doesn’t really speak well for the clothing. That Marchesa dress is ridiculous, which is par for the course. I covet that Jill Sander coat and the Pucci dress (glad the model didn’t wear those boots – they look insane with the dress). I also covet a couple of sailor boys to follow me around, looking smitten.

The photography is cool, but in every case except the first shot the clothes are completely lost in the sepia washout. The model could be wearing anything. That’s acceptable in an artsy coffee table book, but not in a fashion editorial.

I’ve worked really hard to be ok with the body I live in; but how the hell am I supposed to reconcile that delicious coat in the first shot with my five-foot tall frame? No styling in the world would keep me from looking like I stole my mother’s bathrobe.

  To be fair, the coat looks kinda bathrobe-like to me even on the model in the color photo runway version, though it looks absolutely stunning on the model in the editorial. Methinks ’twas meant to be worn only by a 7 foot tall twig in a sepia world with photoshop. If that makes you feel any better.

  I’m just grateful that I eventually (eventually = well into my 30s) figured out that no matter HOW skinny I got, there were just some beautiful clothes I was too short to wear. Some of the photographic evidence from my 20s & early 30s is just tragic.

      Thank you to everyone trying to figure out this shoot, which has left me very confused. Maybe it’s my age, which is considerably more than that of the art directors on this shoot, but American sailors in the streets of NYC mean V-Day (Victory in Europe) to me, as in the sailor kissing the nurse. This is the uniform my uncle wore while trying to kill Germans. Which leads me to asking why would the conquered be glorifying the conqueror? And a Japanese American sailor when most of the Japanese living in America during WWII were put into detention camps? WTF?

        I think it’s safe to assume that this shoot is celebrating iconic images which have lost most of their historical meaning, because the originators don’t know or don’t feel strongly about the original context. As we get older, we can expect more and more of these WTF moments in popular culture.

        You said exactly what I was thinking. I kept having to scroll up to make sure it was really Vogue Germany. If Vogue Germany wants to do an NYC spread, then there’s nothing wierd with that – but this whole thing is completely all-American… and I am definitely seeing WWII here. Sailors and women out on the streets of NYC definitely evokes the feel of the end of the war when everyone was out and celebrating – that would be America’s glory days, NOT Germany’s! That being said, the looks in this editorial are very beautiful, but the reason for this theme is confusing enough to be distracting.

Good looking young men in uniform can pretty much sell anything. The clothes are fine, but the styling, scenery and mood certainly sell them. Good job Vogue.

They are calling this Glory Days, but the sailor’s uniforms appear to be American. That should not call up fond memories of the past to many Germans. Whose glory days are they talking about? The US’s? Is anybody in Germany going to buy this magazine?

  Very few Germans, (or Americans or anyone), under, say, 30, even has *parents* who have clear memories of WW II. You’ve got to be at least 73 to have been 6 when the war ended.

Beautiful shots. But Like the others have said I cant really see the clothes. I also would love for the model to close her mouth. She is striking on her own without that fish mouth action.

I don’t totally love the lacy corset-y thing bisecting it, but the rest of the Pucci dress is beyond divine. I love me a high neck, a long sleeve, and a fabulous print. Yes, please.

This is sublime. The photos, lighting, styling, model, all combine to make these clothes look better than they do on the runway. Even the Stella and the marchesa manage to look great.

Count me in as another who thinks the photography is getting in the way of the clothes–it just changes the entire “feel” of the piece shown. That Jill Sander dress and coat takes on a very different aspect on the model than it does in the B&W photo, where it suffers by looking flat and stiff. As for the other pieces, the Chanel, the Stella, and the Marchesa (which is an identical copy of a dress one of my Barbies wore, way back in the 60′s, I kid you not) do not improve when they’re shown on the pidgeon- toed model in the editorial, but maybe that’s because they’re pretty sad no matter who wears them.
