Elijah Wood for Men’s Book Atlanta

We never feature Frodo here. Possibly because he’s had a stalled career since the heady days of Middle Earth. It seems his cable show has thrust him back into the spotlight and it’s a little shocking to realize how young he still is, even though it’s been almost a decade since he ran from Orcs. Granted, he’s in his 30s now, but that’s almost impossible to believe, looking at him. Most of the “kids” on Glee all look a decade older than him.

And speaking of looking at him, let’s do that.

He’s hardly had a stalled career. He’s been in at least half a dozen films since then, one of which was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and also Everything is Illuminated – both well-received. He’s also been filming the Hobbit and wanted to work on TV. Not every actor wants to work, work, work. He’s well-known enough that he can actually pick what projects he wants to work on.

Wilfred is OK, I watched it for him and it’s good, just not my thing.

      Sure, he’s been in things. We haven’t stated otherwise. But if you look at his IMDB profile, as we did, when we were writing this, you’ll see that he’s worked pretty much every year since Return of the King, but the last 6 or 7 years have seen a lot of videogame and voice-over work. Which, to us, says that he didn’t stop working “by choice,” but that he couldn’t get higher profile work than that for a good while. In other words, stalled.

        He did do Happy Feet 2 in 2011. VO, true, but a lot of actors really like doing VO work. It doesn’t require heavy duty training, stunts or similar. Also, I remember reading an interview after RotK came out where he said he was looking forward to taking time off after spending several years in New Zealand.
        
        Don’t we all wish we had a job where we could take a few years off and then come back as hot as ever?

        And, of course, VO is a blessing for actors like, well, Frodo, and Mark Hamill, and Katey Segal and dozens of other blockbuster/long-running sitcom actors whose faces are so tied to one iconic role that they have immense difficulty getting away from it once it’s over. Not to mention those whose flesh-and-blood casting choices are limited by having a very specific look, or being too short/tall/fat/etc. for casting directors to consider them for anything but a very narrow range of roles.
        
        And there’s really so much great writing and directing in animation and even games over the last decade or so, it’s hardly an act of desperation or stalled-outness–more one of pure riotous fun (hard work, but fun work) that you happen to get a paycheck for.

        This is one of those times where we’re completely befuddled as to why anyone is arguing a certain point we made. He went from headlining an Oscar-sweeping trilogy of blockbusters to doing mostly cartoon and videogame work. Regardless of how well that pays or how much actors love that kind of work, or well the writing and acting is, any industry insider would look at his resume over the past 8 years and consider his career “stalled.” It’s definitely on an upswing now, though. Which is why you’re seeing him back on the red carpet and on the covers of magazines.

        Ehn, I wasn’t arguing with you, just giving a “yes, and” to GorgeousThings, based on what I know from friends who’ve worked in VO. The only slight quibble is that I don’t know how many industry insiders would consider his career truly stalled — there are so many great talents working on the creative side of VO that it may be lower profile and less box-office-mojoey but it’s not really regarded as a stall-out. Less satisfactory to the insiders, for certain values of insiders, than TV and movies, but as long as you’re working steadily on interesting projects with quality people, that still counts. Just like with any other industry, it’s the outright gaps in your resume that kill you.
        
        (Caveat: all the above is purely second-hand and from a lowish-medium profile actor/writer/director’s perspective, a million miles away from the Big Honking Giant Names Who Set The Industry Standards; all standard grain of salt, limited perspective, ex cloaca warnings apply.)

        I think we’re mostly in violent agreement with a semantic quibble on the side — given the combined mojo and goodwill he built up over soldiering through both the filming grind and the subsequent yearslong-pole dance for LOTR, which he seems to have been able to bounce right back into as soon as it suited him to, instead of having to claw his way back up from near-zero again, I’d tend to call it “coasting” rather than “stalling,” but they’re definitely two shades of meaning describing the same lowish-profile/non-sparkly-glamourous track his career was on for quite a few years.
        
        And I completely admit that I’m twitchy and biased and prone to both VO squeeing and VO defensiveness, having been friends with some awesome VO people who’ve been doing stunning work for years and wanting everyone on earth to laud their chosen line of work without end and also being one of those geeky “Hey, that creepy magician from that one episode of Teen Titans is also Spongebob! Did you know Ernest Borgnine worked on Spongebob? Did you see Spongebob’s Smashing Pumpkins video?” pop culture effluvia dorks, so you should feel free to totally ignore me.

    I’m guessing he is offered quirky cutesy young-guy roles (or modified Frodos), due to his still cutesy, young-guy appearance and he’s over that. He might heat up again when he’s close to 40 and less boyish. It’s a shame – I think he is a good actor & miss seeing him in a good amount of stuff.

  Most child actors are chosen for their size (need to be small so they can play younger than they are and be on the set longer) and quirky looks. Unfortunately, this usually doesn’t translate into a tall, good looking man. NPR and JGL are two exceptions.

I like the shoot, he’s giving a ton of personality in each picture. I’ve liked Elijah Wood ever since he was on Conan O’Brien’s show YEARS ago and told stories about getting mistaken for Tobey Maguire (“I loved you in Seabiscuit!”), as well as one guy who turned to him in an elevator and went “…Harry Potter!” He had a great sense of humor about it.

  I think you’ve hit on the problem he has. Toby Maguire, Daniel Radcliffe, and Elijah Wood are all the same “type”: cute, boyish, small of stature. They’re probably all up for the same parts.
  
  Doing a cable show is a good career move these days (it’s certainly working for a lot of great actresses!) And comedy is a good move too–you can imagine him getting some lead roles in comedies and there are a lot more of them these days. (It worked for Mathew Brodderick).

i love elijah. when he was a kid he did some modeling so i always feel like for an actor when he gets asked to do this kind of thing he actually knows what he’s doing other than blankly staring into the distance. also his career has hardly stalled, he’s just been choosing smaller projects since LOTR. i don’t think doing major blockbuster after major blockbuster was ever his style.

I met Elijah once when he was DJing at a Lollapalooza after party. He was very kind even after we bothered him for a picture (something I regretted asking for immediately after), and his DJ set was really fun. He’s a good egg! I can’t wait to see him (however briefly) in The Hobbit.

  Hush Puppies makes a style of womens’ shoe similar to the Bass pair, in black, brown and blue with a funky, but unfortunately red and white, plaid (too patriotic looking for me). I stumbled across them on Zappos a while ago and have been thinking about them ever since. I had a few pairs of Hush Puppies for work in the 90s and loved them. Wish I’d saved them.

  Exactly. I think Ted is a total rip on Wilfred and as much as I liked the original eps of Family Guy, I couldn’t really get into it when they brought it back. It’s too formulaic now. As for Wilfred, I watched the first few eps and it was well done and funny in a totally messed up way, but it was a little much for me. If I want fucked up funny, I’ll stick to Venture Bros. Now THAT is a brilliant show. Total genius.

Young Mr. Wood’s turn as the wordless psychopath in Sin City helped me get past the hobbitness… though, even when they were casting for Frodo I remember thinking “They should get that Elijah kid from ‘The Faculty’ (low budget 90′s shlock shocker with with young Josh Harkness…hell, a young EVERYBODY.)
Now, like Mr Radcliffe, he’s maturing nicely…like wine and responsible (fantasy) boyfriends.

In that second photo, with him sitting on the stool, he looks like Martin Freeman. So that was some interesting casting on Peter Jackson’s part: Bilbo looks like his nephew. (Am I the last one in the LoTR/Hobbit universe to realize this? I haven’t been following the Hobbit stuff very closely.)

I think Wilfred is like the Three Stooges. Guys think it’s hilarious, girls just don’t get it. At least that’s the way my friends & family feel about it. My husband & (grown) sons watch it faithfully. I leave the room when it comes on.

    Srsly, I LOVE Three Stooges. Moe Larry the cheese! And my whole household was excited about Wilfred yet one by one, we all dropped from the show. It was just… I dunno. Couldn’t hold my attention, but that first episode was genius.

Possibly he was shooting for “moody” or “brooding” but since his usual range of expressions seem to consist mostly of “worried”, “nervous”, and “anxious”, the end result was this.
