Charlize Theron & Michael Fassbender for W Magazine

Hotter-than-Georgia-asphalt stars Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron grace the cover of W, darlings. Excellent news for people who worship the genetically gifted, yes?

Charlize is wearing a Dior Archive lambskin dress, LaCrasia Gloves gloves, and an Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. sterling silver necklace. Michael is wearing a DSquared2 lambskin vest, Viktor & Rolf Monsieur leather pants, and a Bess belt.

And while it’s true they still look hot, they also look poreless and plastic, which is kind of a shame. If aesthetically perfect creatures like Fassie and Theron need Photoshop, what does that say about the rest of us? Let the beautiful be as naturally beautiful as possible, editors. These two didn’t need the leg up.

  ETA: My bet it’s a story about a trustng gentle woman who has been hurt before, currently on the run from the husband who betrayed her to the mob. Starring Fassie as the jaded ex-cop who initially doesn’t trust her, thinking she’s a spoiled mafia princess, but eventually gives her his battered heart. Featuring a happily ever after where the comically evil ex-husband is, sadly, killed before he can stand a long drawn-out trial.

  Absolutely. The lighting, the colours, the heavy photoshopping; even the pose. It’s distinctly 90s sci-fi paperback – back when they were still painting the covers. If it inched back towards the seventies, there’d be a front blurb including something like: Forbidden Love – Beyond The Stars!

Yeah, it’s a sci-fi vibe they’re going for, which is fine in the context of the film. Didn’t recognize Charlize; for such a distinctively beautiful woman she’s quite the chameleon, isn’t she?

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the photoshopping kind of works for me here, because it heightens the “cover of a cheap pulp novel” effect (which is obviously what they were going for intentionally, with the posing and all). I like how they actually bother to list what Michael Fassbender is wearing, given that mostly what he’s wearing is Charlize Theron.

They may not have had to do as much retouching as you think–blue light is amazing like that (although they probably had to soften all the shadows. Multiple light sources can make some ugly shadows when they’re differing colors). Remember that for your next romantic dinner-at-home.

I really like the composition of this shot, and love that he’s looking into the lens. Gorgeous.

This cover is the embodiment of the gender body language issues in popular media. He’s looking strong, facing the camera, holding her up. She’s falling down, with her neck exposed, not looking at the camera, i.e. looking helpless. Yuck.

  There’s a great little film about that very topic….dangit! The name fails me and my Google search isn’t working. But it’s really good, it puts men in ‘traditional’ female poses and asks you to ‘monitor your reaction’ to them, it talks about the infantilazation (sp?) of women…..it really is fascinating. I wish I could remember the name! It’s a documentary, about how gender is portrayed in the media and how these ideals are pretty much SHOVED down our throats, constantly. Google it!

    This isn’t your film, PinkLemon, but Alice Walker said transposing cultural expectations for each sex was one of the themes of The Color Purple. I saw the film when it was first released, but there were so many characters (and I was such a semi-comatose first-time mother) that I missed huge chunks of the story. I recently read the book for the first time and really appreciated the gender bending.

It’s funny, I always thought he was hot, but he reminded me of someone though I couldn’t put my finger on who. Then, halfway through watching Shame in the theatre (where Fassie’s penis was about 6′ high on the screen), I realized who it was: a super-creepy, probably crazy coworker of mine. After that I just kept seeing my creepy coworker on the screen, but nekkid and doing the deed over and over again. Ew. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
