Darlings, for today’s lunchtime guyditorial, we decided to go in a pouty-lipped direction.

Prometheus star Logan Marshall-Green is featured in the latest issue of Bullett magazine photographed by Eliot Lee Hazel.

Okay, not the most stylish or interesting editorial in the world, but he’s got a big movie out and he’s cute to look at, which is enough to justify it. And speaking of that new movie…

We grabbed a moment to catch Prometheus this weekend and since we can’t seem to go more than twenty minutes without expressing an opinion about something, here’s what we think: A visually stunning film; in fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s one of the most visually stunning science fiction films of all time. Fassbender gave an amazing performance; so much so that we’d cheer him on if he became the first actor to win an Oscar playing a robot. Other than that, there’s little to recommend. The rest of the cast is tragically wasted (especially Idris Elba and Charlize Theron), the dialogue is often as tin as it gets, and both the plot and the actions of the characters almost never make the slightest bit of sense. Don’t let the pre-press fool you. It’s every inch an Alien prequel; there’s absolutely nothing subtle about that part of it. Despite our issues with how the characters acted, the actual “alien” parts of the story didn’t bother us at all, even if they cast the original films in a decidedly different light. But there are times the plotting gets so bad or characters wind up acting wildly different from scene to scene that we actually wondered how the film made it to print in its current form. THAT’S how poorly put together it all is. A shame, really. Go see it for the visuals and for Fassbender’s Peter O’Toole impersonation, but don’t expect major scares or even a story that makes much sense.

  I just knew Idris’ talent was going to be wasted once again uggh talk about driving Ms. Prometheus. On the bright side though, he has the lead role in an upcoming Guillermo del toro sci fi project. I believe it is called Pacific rim or something. Now that is a movie I am looking forward to.

Color me disappointed as well, for most of the same reasons. Funny to see a feature with this guy, because his character in the film was a HUGE douchebag, unconvincing as any type of serious scientist and completely unlikable. We were supposed to root for these people? I has a sad.

Absolutely agree with the Prometheus breakdown. I’d add that Noomi Rapace was quite good in the latter half of the film, once she didn’t have to share scenes with Marshall-Green who really kind of sucked–his character and his acting.

As pretty as this guy is, I sincerely doubt his career is going anywhere. He really does look too much like Tom Hardy, with much less talent.

  Yeah I agree on Noomi. Very intense second half. If the setup had delivered on the premise, she would have knocked it out of the park.

Oh, I actually would have appreciated a little TLO commentary on the costuming in the film. The Vickers suits, David 8′s clothes, and the spacesuits were interesting.

The script was so dumb that no amount of visual stunningness (which may not be a word, but let’s just let it go) could save it for me. Somewhere a “Scientist’s Anti-Defamation League” should be mounting massive demonstrations against this movie.

  I can’t even figure out why they cast Guy Pearce. I kept expecting some sort of de-aging thing, but no…nothing. Why not just hire an OLD actor and age him further. Seems like that would have led to a better performance, and perhaps been more believable. I think it’d be hard for any actor to shine under all that paint.

Thanks for the breakdown on the movie. I may have to see it simply for the visuals and Fassbender, of course. Several people have told me his performance was crazy good.

As far as this editorial goes, meh. The shot of him on the railroad tracks is just odd.

Clearly, I am in the minority on this here, but I liked it. It was a sci-fi movie that delivered some science and some fiction and I liked the idea about the feelings that the entity that created us might not be quite up to our own perceptions (I hope that doesn’t spoil anything). Fassbender was great, the movie was intense in a lot of places — it was a fun summer movie. Sure, people say don’t touch that and someone touches it and the dialog is stiff (at best) in places, but overall I wasn’t mad about my 11 bucks going towards it.

In a reasonable world, Damon Lindelof will be banned from writing anything after the shit pie that is Lost. The story is such a very loose mess of bits and pieces. What’s with David poisoning this Logan guy anyway? How does it help anything? Huh?

I thought Logan Marshall-Green’s acting, in particular, was disappointing. Oh, and how stupid most the the crew was – that was the definitely most disappointing (and unbelievable) part for me.
But yes, Fassbender was amazing, and visually it was pretty impressive.

Hmm…I kind of disagree. I thought there was a lot left unanswered, but I didn’t think the story was poorly told. It was just told from a limited perspective. I fully admit, there were a couple of things that were telegraphed so clearly I knew were going to happen from the moment the characters stepped into frame, but I really liked it. AND I thought it was plenty scary for most people. Obviously, Elizabeth Shaw is the main character, so she’s the most developed, but I didn’t think Idris and Charlize were underutilized, so much as subtly used.
My biggest problem is that it was shot in 3D. I watched the movie in 2D, because 3D gives me horrible headaches, but there were NUMEROUS times that I felt the movie was wasting time on a 3D visual stunt. If they’d spent less time with exploding star maps and flailing limbs, there might have been more time to understand Charlize and David’s tenuous relationship, or find out who hired Scottish woman, or why the foreign Tupperware was so leaky.
But even with those tiny things, it IS a gorgeous movie, well worth seeing.

Thank you! All the nerds on my facebook feed won’t listen to me when I say I was very underwhelmed. Visually stunning movie but when all my husband and I can talk about for an hour after the movie is all the various ways the plot didn’t make sense, well, that just doesn’t cut it for me.
