    She essentially has to show that she’s INSURABLE — in Hollywood, no one cares how messed up you are, as long as the insurance company will still underwrite your project. Actors with too many issues, past or present, need a project that shows that they are reliable enough that the insurance companies will cover them. The only way to do it is to either find some low-budget project like this with much lower costs for them to cover if you OD halfway through, or be talented enough that someone will take a chance on you without insurance.

    What drives me crazy is when people say how talented she is… I thought she was talented as a child actress in Parent Trap, but to me she’s 2nd fiddle in every other movie. Rachel McAddams (and the other Mean Girls for that matter) totally outshone her, and I honestly can’t think of anything else she was in that stood out to me. The thing is, some other actress may play Liz even if she does not look like Liz so much, because they can evoke her. With Lindsay, it seems Lindsay herself is too “present” to play someone as iconic as Liz. She may bear *some* physical resemblance but I don’t think she can convey Liz’s air.

At least with Michelle Williams as Marilyn you had a person who attempted (and succeeded at some level) to evoke Ms. Monroe, and her coloring and facial features were workable. Even Katie Holmes did a passable Jacqueline Kennedy, again mostly because of coloring. As others have said (including the gods of opinion) Lindsay doesn’t even seem to resemble Liz Taylor, not even (really) in the set up shot.
And I’m sorta sorry–I’m not crazy about Lohan but pity her downward spiral and wish she would just get out of ‘the business’ and try her hand at computer programming or something.

True, but Angela Bassett brought a lot of Tina Turner to that role in how she moved her body, her facial expressions, and her speech patterns; plus she also captured her Turner’s strength, vulnerability, dignity and drive. I think lots of folks have serious reservations about whether Lindsay can capture any of the the poise, glamour and confidence that people associate with Elizabeth Taylor at that time. Absent that, one would at least hope for a physical resemblance.

I’m ashamed to say I know she’s definitely getting paid — I don’t know how much. I just remember having read tabloidish or gossipish reports that because so much of the budget for this thing was going to her, they had to go with a list of actors for Richard Burton that Lindsay complained was far, far below the quality she wanted in a costar. Something about wanting to fly to England to hand pick her Burton, which Lifetime didn’t let her do.

Off the top of my head I can think of 5 other actresses I’d rather see tackle this project (although most would probably turn this down):

1. Zooey Deschanel (she has the right coloring and could probably mimic her voice, but she would need to eat more hoagies to get that Liz softness).
2. Megan Fox (see above).
3. Christina Hendricks (she could don a bad wig a la Lohan, but has much more of the acting chops and figure, for sure. She would turn this part down, I bet).

No, and do you know why? Because Liz never let herself be photographed (by anyone other than Dick) with her mouth hanging open and slack-jawed, as thick-lipped (like the old medical text books describe it) “as a mouthbreather”.

She might have been able to pass for 40-year-old Liz some years back, before she had all that terrible plastic surgery. Now her froglike lips are absurdly pumped, and her cheekbones emphasize how different she looks. The faces of young girls change as they get older; they don’t really look like “themselves” until they’re well into their twenties. Lohan’s very superficial resemblance to Liz is gone now. Notice also how extreme the makeup (and photoshop) is in the closeup — nothing organic about those eyebrows or lips. Liz’s face glows with presence, awareness, intelligence; Lohan looks like a drawing. The other pictures are just tragic; she has absolutely zero of Liz’s carriage and bearing. And the hairstylist should be fired for that horrible thing on her head.

The difference is, Liz Taylor playing Liz Taylor was fascinating — endlessly so. Even in her worst movies — and she made some stinkers — you couldn’t take your eyes off her. Lohan’s biggest flaw, ultimately, is that she is profoundly boring. No personality, no life, not even particularly good-looking.

I agree completely with you, TLo. The resemblance is striking and as you’ve pointed out with all the work that goes into taking a pic like that if it doesn’t look like Liz then it’s a massive fail.

Just sad, really, Lindsay’s gone from being a Marilyn wannabe to a Liz copy-cat. Which is tragic as Liz copied no-one.

The pictures are Liz-ish, so that’s close enough. But does it really matter if she looks just like Liz? Carrie Mulligan or Chloe Sevigny would be great in the movie – as long as they do a great job of acting. And Lindsay could very well do a great job in the role, but she’s going to get ridiculed by everyone because it’s a) Lindsay Lohan playing b) an icon.
