Jonathan Saunders Menswear Spring 2013 Collection

Inspired by the work of Hungarian-French Op-Art pioneer Victor Vasarely, Jonathan Saunders took his love of color, print and texture in a decidedly geometric direction. For the shapes, he looked to David Bowie. The combination is crisp and colorful, with an uber-modern feel to it, which is ironic considering the very 20th Century inspirations. We love a menswear collection that doesn’t skimp on texture and pattern. There’s so little to play with in traditional menswear that it’s a delight to see it when a designer gets it right. It’s a really fabulous set of looks.

  I don’t know… when I was in HS, I specifically work black dress socks and Vans with my Dickies shorts. I thought I looked pretty styling, but I was probably wrong, haha.

  LOL! I thought the same thing, this reminds me more of Kraftwerk and maybe a little bit of Ian Curtis than it does Bowie. Either would be good things though.
  
  On a general note, love the collection, and I especially love how, perhaps because it’s not that common to (successfully) play with color and pattern in men’s fashion, it is so much more striking when it happens. Like that green suit, I don’t think I have ever seen a suit that color, and I know why, it’s probably not easy to pull off, but it sure is awesome! And the texture of that first suit is amazing, it manages to be different that without going to “only works in a model posing just so” lengths.

you are right about this too. i love a lot of these myself. theyre the kind of outfits that, once again, make me wish i could wear menswear as womenswear. never gonna happen no way. chance in hell. etc & ect. otoh, i hope that one or another of the women we see on the red carpet goes for something like the green suit, left, third from the bottom, or the blue suit, right, from the following row. & maybe maybe even i could wear the twinset or its semi-matching sweater to the left, four rows from the bottom.

The yellow sweater – is it really short, or is it tucked in? I can’t tell. I also am not sure if the black band is part of the sweater or if it’s a belt (like what’s going on in the 2nd row, heather green sweater).

This is really well done. Not a fan of the tucked in sweater with the yellow stripe, or the trench with the odd bathroom tile pattern ombre, but everything else is fab.

Why is the look book so damned dark??? I think I like most of these, though the ombre-inspired pieces are just as bad as the ombre hair trend. Just, no.

Oh my GOD I love this. I can see the Bowie influence very clearly. These are now the costumes for the Bowie biopic, starring SWINTON, that exists in my head.

I hope some of the suits will make it to the red carpet–Jude Law? Gosling? Andrew Garfield?

I really like that shoe, even in silver. I also like the first row. Although I like the the color palette through out;
and the fabrics; the designs and/or the styling feel very strained, stiff and uncomfortable.

my husband’s 66 and i’d love to see him in some of these. i think some alterations would be involved, though. since he’s retired, he’s really into cooking and…..

my favorites are the kelly green pieces and and the first look. lovely to enjoy a menswear collection, usually they are either boring or way too cray-cray. (as a side note, my spellcheck doesn’t oppose the word cray-cray. have the minions infiltrated the spellcheck dictionary?)
