Katharine McPhee is featured in the June 2012 issue of Glamour magazine photographed by Nicolas Moore.

Katharine McPhee has the personality of room-temperature oatmeal. We appreciate the attempt, Glamour, but there was no way she was ever going to do anything but limply stand there and wait for her picture to be taken. The girl’s no model. She’s barely an actress – and even then, we’re being kind.

Yes. This is us, “being kind.”

So … Smash. One or two people have asked if we’re going to write about it anymore. Probably not. Reason? It sucks. No, really. It’s like a slow motion car crash at this point. Every moment and in every scene, the suckitude quietly increases. We heard a rumor that the second season will be an almost-total reboot, that very little of what’s going on right now will continue over into the next season, and that the cast will be dramatically reduced. That sounds like a good idea to us. We’ve said all along that we thought a workplace drama set in the world of the theater had tremendous potential, and we like pretty much all of the major cast members (even if the writing isn’t serving them well), but there’s an awful lot of secondary characters that need to go (ELLISELLISELLIS) and others who need to never speak again (JULIA’S MOUTHBREATHING SON), before this show can ever find its footing.

I worked for years in a musical theatre, and yeah, it is a great concept, but this show is so godawful it is unwatchable.

I totally forgot I had Smash recorded on my DVR. So, there ya go…

I think Debra Messing has been great in her role on Smash. I do hope they salvage it because it could be so good.

And yes, Ms. McPhee is no model.

All the personality of room-temperature oatmeal. That just about sums it up. Still watching Smash, mostly because I’m holding out (increasingly desperate) hope that it really will get better next season.

To be fair to McPhee, she’s A LOT prettier than this editorial has made her look. Whenever I see an editorial shot this way, with that kind of hair, lighting, and airbrushing, I don’t blame the person being photographed. I blame the art director and the photographer. You have to really go out of your way to make someone as lovely as Katherine McPhee look this bad. Sure, she isn’t a model, but that’s why you shoot a person like her as a person, not as a mannequin or a robot (which is what they’ve done).

  the weirdest thing about that is that they arent quite mom jeans. despite the stonewash, theyve got a really unusual & almost interesting cut [i'm iffy around the crotch part, though, if you will]. but somehow this shoot is, indeed & opposite of most shoots, making them give off a mom vibe. very odd.

There’s hope. I heard a vague rumor that says Ellis finally gets his comeuppance. Not sure what that means, but any smack down of this character would be welcome. As for McPheee, I find her pretty and talented as a singer but the blandest of bland otherwise.

I hope Anjelica Huston is still around in Season 2 and that they actually use her to the best of her abilities. I love her; she’s the main reason I gave the show a try.

Anyway, yeah, McPhee kind of looks like Jaclyn Smith, but she needs acting classes to get to Smith’s level (I’m not saying Smith was a master thespian, but she was competent).

I physically cringed away from that second photo. She strikes me as the beribboned,barrel curled kindergartener in a cupcake dress and lacy socks for picture day. I’ve always been pretty, and that’s always been enough. Look at me! Serious bubble.

I started out watching Smash with high hopes, but ever since the episode where Debra Messing’s character is saying, “NO, PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE,” and the guys she had an affair with (can’t even remember names at this point) decides this means, “Yes, please unbutton my shirt,” I’ve been unable to watch. It’s so bad and I really can’t deal with the lack of focus on actual THEATER coupled with really bad personal life drama. I digress…

I have a question. What is the origin of “mouth breathing” as an insult? I’ve heard it for a long time, but never quite got what it was about. For me personally, with my sinuses being frequently stuffed up, I’d die without a mouth to breathe with. Just curious if anyone has some insight into this. Seriously.

  I’m no etymologist but I’d guess it’s an offshoot of “slack jawed”, indicating a perceived lack of intelligence, but it’d probably have to be combined with a blank expression (see jeans pic above as an excellent example) for it to really hit home.

Just last night I realized I’m on the verge of dumping Smash. There were two unwatched episodes on my DVR, and it almost felt like a burden to start the first one. Then I stopped halfway through. I haven’t outright deleted them — I so want to like it much more, for some odd reason — but that’s just SUCH a bad sign for a TV show.

Three-day-old oatmeal, at that. If they do a reboot, focus on Ivy (Megan Hilty), Tom (Christian Borle) and whatsername’s husband, the one played by Brian d’Arcy James. Let him remember he used to want to be a star, dump the wife, steal her composing partner, and the two of them can write musicals he stars in opposite Ivy. Cause Debra Messing, her stalker boyfriend, her slackjaw son, Anjelica Huston, her scruffy bartender boyfriend, Ellis, Uma and especially McPhee are SO not working. I kind of like Jack Davenport (at least he’s hot) but they’ve pretty much ruined his character, too. See ya, Theresa Rebeck! Let’s bring in Harvey Fierstein or Robert Lopez and get this party started!

That is one of the worst editorials I’ve seen. She’s a pretty girl and I think this does her no justice. I blame this less on her than the styling and general concept. Booo.

She’s probably a very nice girl, and she’s pretty and has a nice voice, but she is utterly lacking in charisma.

As far as the show, it lost me after the 2nd episode. It went downhill very quickly.

Smash lost me halfway through the first show. I think I saw it all coming.

Never liked her, she’s actually the reason I quit watching American Idol and the reason I never started this show. Hate her singing voice (hate!), and the blazing flashes of evil she’d get in her eyes when the judges gave her the rare criticism genuinely creeped me out. Remember when other contestants would sing and she’d sit there glaring at them, but as soon as she was aware the camera was on her, she’d smile and start clapping? Wow–been a long time since I let her fire me up. Sorry, rant over.

  LOL! You summed up my feelings for her perfectly. I hated her during American Idol – I felt like she was shoved down our throats. She’s not that talented at all, and she’s totally fake. She just has friends in high places who keep trying to make her “happen.” STOP!! I would never watch anything with her in it.

I simply can’t stop watching Smash. I just love Megan Hilty far too much. I’ll take what I can get! Sadly, I’m sure that she will be passed over for the lead for the milquetoast McPhee. Such is the difference between Hollywood and Broadway. Sad.
