Fan Bingbing for Vogue China

Darlings, here’s your gorgeous for the day. Since the Precious Unborn Fawns of our readers can’t get enough of Miss Fan, what better way to close out the week than to feature her giving face in the latest issue of Vogue China? Granted, we’d enjoy seeing a bit more fashion, but there are worse ways to start your weekend than by watching a diva give face.

  I agree; I think she’s fantastic. Gotta say though, I love her eyebrows! They are so soft and have a great natural shape. But then, I’m a fan of eyebrows looking like eyebrows, not drawings of eyebrows.

      Not especially, but I’ve got to give Ms. Palmer some respect because 1) her eyebrow drawings are interesting, and 2) in the Dresden Dolls FAQ regarding her eyebrows’ falseness (which I would link to, but it’s not letting me), she has an excellent response:
      
      “I was born this way. I am a specially bred member of the Illuminati and they function sort of like alien bar codes. Every time I travel to the center of the earth I have to press my face up against a large glass cog with laser beams scanning my face to gain admittance. For those of you who want the look, though, I suggest a Mach 3 and Maybelline Liquid Eyeliner in Black or Dark Gray.”
      
      So I think if you’re going to draw eyebrows, you may as well be awesome about it à la Palmer.
      
      But on the whole, I do prefer Ms. Fan’s.

  my eyebrows are smilar, and I let them do their thing also. Eyebrow shaping goes in and out of style, I’m convinced your natural growth is probably how they should be…there are extreme cases tho

  The last couple of Cannes red carpet pics I was thinking she needed to clean up her eyebrows, but here they look much better here. She, like me,has two completely different eye brows it is probably the better part of discretion to leave them be.

When I was younger and watching My Fair Princess, her first TV show and one of the biggest c-dramas ever, my parents and I thought she was the best looking girl in the cast. Years later and she is the most successful so you go, Ms Fan!

  Really?! It seems like Jin Suo had plastic surgery since then. Her eyes used to look so very sleepy. She looks so plain, just the kind of look which will get you cast as a lowly servant – which she was.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if she did, but she was still pretty then. YMMV obvs and I don’t really mind sleepy Asian eyes, I have them myself. She was about 16 then. It was her first role so of course she wouldn’t get first or second lead so easily. Not that she did much in that role. Vicky Zhao was the best actor in that series though.

i think i’d rather look like this than almost anyone. if i had more time to think i’m sure i could come up w/ a few more people who are just as unusual, but not that many. i guess thats why when people look at someone like heidi or diane kruger or on & on–tallthinblonde–i dont ever quite get it. i havent gotten it since i was a child & poor farrah fawcett was golden. i hope it changes someday. anyway.

I gotta say, I CAN (and have), gotten enough of Fan BingBing. She’s very pretty, but frankly, she’s also kind of a cliche, albeit a divatastic one.

    Oh, man. Feel free not to read this; I’m about to get all critique-y. The short answer, I guess, would be “orientalist” – that is, exoticized stereotypes about East Asian women. And I’m honestly having trouble picking apart exactly what it is that screams that stereotype to me. It’s that whole woman-as-doll thing you see in the Vogue China shoot in particular, but also in the styling in the Chris Bu Kewen gown pic and elsewhere. The way a lot of her styling and makeup is reminiscent of geisha images or the Shanghai equivalent (that is, the Shanghai version of woman-adorned-for-male-gaze). The use of jade green as a theme (and to be fair, maybe that’s just a coincidence. I dunno. I suspect if you see it, you see it, and if you don’t, you don’t, and that’s fine. And of course, I should stick a huge bunch of caveats here: the woman has a right to dress however she damn well pleases, of course. And I have no idea what audience she’s trying to dress for or how these styles would read, to, say, the Chinese fashion community, so what I’m getting off her may have nothing to do with what she’s intending to convey. But I do think there’s a strong theme to the looks she’s worn (at least as featured by T Lo) and to me, at least, it reads as a stereotype and not one I’m super comfortable with.

      Hmmm, not seeing it I have to say.
      For one thing it’s Vogue China, if it was another Vogue, well maybe. But surely Vogue China has no different an agenda in it’s presentation of it’s own country’s models and actresses than say US Vogue with a leggy blonde. Does Vogue China have much circulation outwith China and Chinese communities?Secondly, she has a very delicate, doll-like face. It would be hard to make her anything different. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see anything intentionally doll-like in these shots. Rather I see fantasy elements which may appear slightly doll-like because of her features. I do think context is everything. And how a culture presents itself to itself, as well as to outside eyes, has to be seen very differently to how an outside culture portrays it.
