Here’s your prettyboy for the day. And while Andrew Garfield has a face made to be photographed, he suffers from that malady all boystars do when forced to wear expensive clothes and stare into a lens:

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield is featured in the Summer 2012 issue of VMAN magazine photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and styled by Nicola Formichetti.

His face has frozen into one facial expression. This may be the worst of the guyditorial thousand-yard-stares we’ve seen in some time. The clothes look great and he looks great, but when you scroll through them all at once, it’s hard not to get the impression that he’s wearing a mask or that they simply pasted the same face over and over again on some other model. Andrew, you’re an actor. Act like you’re a model. It’s not hard.

In other Andrew Garfield news, we saw the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man movie when we went to see The Avengers (which was 2+ hours of fun awesomeness, by the way) and we have to say, we’re completely underwhelmed by him. Tom’s as geeky as geeky gets, but he turned to Lo after the trailer and said, “That does nothing toward making me want to see it.” If you can’t get a geek excited about your Spider-Man movie, you might be in trouble. He just comes off so smarmy and full of himself.

But he does have some amazing hair, that can’t be denied.

I have no interest in watching another Spider-Man (out of ALL the franchises to reboot are they really just microwaving Tobey McGuire’s and serving it up again?) and the trailer inspires nothing. I’ll hold off until the movie actually comes out, but I may have a male on my Irrational Celebrity Hate List. He has a quality that makes me want to punch him in the face.

  For real. I had no opinion of him in Tron but now he’s starting to make me feel facepunchy in that “the hand wants what the hand wants” kind of way. And I love Spider-Man. But not this Spider-Man.

He does nothing for me, but he has to be an improvement over Tobey McGuire. In my opinion, Tobey and Kirsten were perhaps some of the worst miscasting in history.

What I gathered from the trailer is more of a return to the early Spiderman stuff where Peter comes across as way more of a social outcast nerd and occasional jerk, which I’m fine with. I didn’t really get bro, but that’s me.

    When he played Frank in Doctor Who five years ago, he had that fragility and humanity quality also. That was the first time I ever saw him. I was amazed when he showed up in The Social Network, and I kept thinking to myself, I know that guy, who is he? With you on how much fun The Avengers was and on how I can’t be arsed to see the Spiderman reboot.

I want to know what that sound is on the Prometheus trailer and who came up with it? It’s haunting and beautiful and scary and it REALLY makes me want to see the film despite the fact that I know I’m far too squeamish to deal with it!

Even though I heart-like-crazy geekyboys, I do not understand the appeal of this guy. He leaves me cold. Maybe it’s that he comes off as calculating, or too conventional?

[geek-ese] Also, the characterization of Spiderman in that trailer was ASS. The mugging clip makes PParker seem like a jock dudebro, which is the opposite of the point of the character (so I’ve always assumed). [/geek-ese]

The clothes are nice, as are the arms. I think when he is looking away from the camera (pictures 3, 6, & 7) he actually has a pretty effective model-like face on. But when he’s looking at the camera I’m not buying it.

I’m a middle aged fangurl(and even older than Tom, thankyouverymuch) and I totally agree on both counts. The Avengers movie was AWESOME and Spiderman totally underwhelms me. Batman might be one to watch though….

  I suspect Nolan/Bale’s third and last Batman outing will pulverize all the records that The Avengers just smashed.
  
  For my own part, much as I’ve enjoyed the Nolan Batman there’s something fabulous about what Marvel has pulled off with Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Hulk, Thor & Captain America all leading up to The Avengers.
  
  Joss Whedon is a bloody genius! It could so easily have gone wrong; eight lead characters (NINE if you count ‘the other guy’) plus Coulson and Hill in support – how are you supposed to manage everyone’s screen time let alone each individual story arc? But he did it and it’s not just ‘good’, it is GREAT!

Hey, why aren’t you guys doing movie reviews? I would LOVE to hear what you have to say about The Avengers, and a million other movies as well. I’m such a nug when it comes to appreciating nuance, but I love learning about it from your perspective and then going back and appreciating the show with that perspective.

I’ve seen and liked AG in the things he’s done. He is very pretty and a decent actor to boot, but these photos are really really boring. He’s partly to blame, but yeah, the editorial team needs to take some of it too. Still, act like a model is always good advice for these things haha.

About the Spider-man movie, your news makes me sad. I’m not very geeky, but I’ll admit I completely geeked out when the Spider-man movies with Maguire came out. So much fun! I was really looking forward to this new one.

Andrew Garfield won me over in The Social Network. And in Never let me go. And in the Imaginarium of doctor Parnassus. And in the series Red Riding even which was kind of confusing and ridiculous on so many levels.
And then i made a vow to stop watching his movies because they always make me cry. haha

But seriously, i love him and im stoked to see him as spiderman. Me and all my geeky friends have certainly gotten excited about the movie and about him as Peter, the trailer got me legit excited opposed to just being excited that he was going to be in it. I think it looks amazing.
