We seem to have made a habit of dropping the ball on your daily dose of pretty, because the kittens were not happy with the last two entries.

We think we got this one right. It’s pretty, it’s springtastic, and most importantly of all, it’s not from an Italian fashion magazine, because they seem to be in a collective weird mood right now. Okay, Korea. You’re up. Make the Bitter Kittens happy and give them that shot of pretty we’ve been promising them all week.

Well done on the Moschino/Marc Jacobs match. LOVE IT! Still hate the Vuitton collection and the Miu Miu, but this IS a very pretty editorial. I am loving all the other looks here, especially the aforementioned one and the first two.

      I’m from the PNW, too. It’s not my uniform, but Birkenstocks, socks, and shorts abound.

    Well, it makes sense in context if they’re drawing from multiple Asian cultures for the shoot.
    
    Some of the shoes (especially the platforms with chunky heels) are reminiscent of Japanese geta sandals, which are worn with tabi socks.

      In the late ‘ 70′s bobby socks were a big trend in Korea. And in Korea, if one person wears something, EVERYONE wears something, so 99.99% of the women were wearing ankle-high white socks. It’s possible the trend is coming back. It is/was also a part of the school-girl uniform, and a lot of these outfits have a school-girl look to them, so it may be that. Responding to kirble because I feel a little clumped together with all Asians when she suggests that a Korean editorial would be referencing Japanese tabi socks because it’s an Asian shoot. Nope, different countries.

        Plus, frankly, if she wants to draw from *Japan* for a *Korean* shoot, she can just reference socks with heels — I live in Japan and girls wear those together all the damn time!

As I pondered how awesome the outfits were, I thought “what is it with Asian fashion mags and the socks?” (the last Korean photoshoot you featured had them too). Then it hit me (in an “ew” way). It seems there’s a strong disposition in Asian fashion to make women seem prepubescent. Exhibit A : harajuku girls. I wish they’d get over that.

Otherwise, cool clothes.

  I don’t think that’s the case. I’m not sure about Korea, but in Japan, they traditionally wear socks with kimonos and sandals, so maybe the socks-with-sandals look seems more natural to them, than to us.

  Harajuku girls are Japanese. This pictorial is Korean. I see your point about the fetish over pre-pubescent girls in Japan, but please don’t lump all Asian groups together.

  Korea and Japan are different countries with different cultures. Just because we all have black hair and dark eyes (well, are born with them, anyway) doesn’t mean we’re all interchangeable. Korea is generally much more modest and conservative with regard to female sexuality, so the weird Japanese fetish stuff does not apply.

    I wasn’t at all implying Asian women are interchangeable based on looks. I was just pointing to harajuku girls as an obvious (and most off-the-cuff) reference in Asian fashion to the point I was making. I don’t even think it’s “weird Japanse fetish stuff” as American and European fashion obviously shares the obsession. Regardless, I just am not personally a fan of making women look “girlish” as a ploy to appease agism in the industry.

      In defense of hughman, it didn’t seem to me that he was implying Asian women are interchangeable – just doing what he said he was doing – using an example to support a generalization. Koreans seem to like their women girlish, so they do have that in common with the Japanese.

        I disagree – one of the hallmarks of a young fashionable Korean woman in my experience is a kind of grown-up glam. Going shopping in Japan, you’re inundated with frills, lace, and loose-fitting silhouettes, with most tailored or close-fitting garments being firmly on the garish side. High-street shopping in Korea, however, has far more sheath dresses, nipped-waist blazers, and other generally ‘womanly’ styles. I can’t fit into the clothes of either country, damn my Scandinavian big bones, but mainstream Korean fashion is very much less infantalising than mainstream Japanese fashion. For a powerful illustration of the different feminine ideals, have a look at a music video by AKB48, a Japanese girl-group juggernaut, and compare it to one by Girls Generation, one of the most popular Korean girl groups.

        True, the fashions may not be childlike. I was referring more to cultural expectations of women. I don’t follow K=pop a lot, but from what I see on dramas and videos and in real life, they’re still pretty feminine and girlish. look at the faces on Girls Generaion – fresh and innocent.

  Some Harajuku girls dress like little prepubescent dolls. Maybe these particular styles seem prevalent because they’re held up more often for westerners to gawk at, but there are also plenty of otona/adult fashion in Japan. Check out Streetpeeper for street fashion in Tokyo, Seoul, and Jakarta. Also, like Ingrid said, the doll-look isn’t really seen much outside Japan.
  
  Could still be cultural differences (like tabi socks with kimonos, beoseon with hanboks), but I think the socks + heels are just a throwback to the 50′s, which is what this and the other Korean editorial that TLo covered (the only other Asian fashion editorial I can remember on this site with socks + heels) seem to be influenced by.

  Also! I do get what you mean about the ickiness of Japan and infantalism in
  general. Check out “Little Boy,” a Japanese art exhibit about it.
  It’s named after one of the bombs that hit Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The gist is that Japan, a superpower at the time, felt weak, humiliated, and so like a child after the bombings and the American occupation, so they turned to cute things (to comfort them) and violent things (to feel a little more badass again). Then it just stuck and flourished in their culture.
  
  Maybe they do just need to “get over it” but I kinda doubt that’ll happen with kawaii culture spreading more and more.

Much better. I like the Miu Miu capelets, but the Moschino/Jacobs combo is genius. I like how the flipped the skirt thing in. I love how models can wear socks and high heels, and make it look SO cool. The reality is not so bueno.

This is awfully similar to the ‘Spring Breeze’ editorial, trading in 50′s-ish styling for 40′s-ish styling, and a water garden in for a bonsai garden. Same blooming cherry trees, same red lips, same lens filter… they’re almost featuring the same designers (Marc Jacobs, Dior, Miu Miu, Vuitton…). It’s very pretty, but when they’re promoting two consecutive editorials in very similar veins, does that continuity help them establish their message, or do they seem redundant instead?

She did the Princess Leia hair wrong. It is supposed to look like to pastries on the side of her head and over her ears, not like two lumps on top of her head. The socks with the adult shoes are ridiculous. And the LV dress looks like a nurse’s uniform, and the shoe/sock combo don’t help. Most of this is an uninspired look to the 1960′s, before the hippies and the Beatles unwound the fashion world. This is what I call classic Tricia Nixon. Suitable for older women, except for the shoe/sock thing. In fact, most of this looks like it would have gone down the runway in the early 60′s. Some of those dresses make the runway models’ hips look big, like Dior pieces, and the LV nurse’s uniform. This is boring. Yawn.

By the way, I think the hair and the shoe/sock combo relate to the Asian schoolgirl look that was popular for a few years. Here, we would liken it to the look for the pedophile crowd. Yuck.

This is how it’s done — the clothes look great (often better than they looked on the runway), the styling and photography are interesting, the settings evoke a mode that enhances the clothes, and you can see what the clothes look like. I’m even willing to overlook tube socks with high-heeled sandals.

I love the way they’ve mixed designers, and every single thing is styled way better in this spread than on the runway. Particularly that Louis Vuitton. What a difference a belt makes! The model’s hairstyle is great; love those exaggerated victory rolls!

as with most editorials from an Asian Vogue, the styling is fantastic. The socks with sandals thing has really grown on me, but I still love it best with the sparkly socks from Dior Spring 2011. These thick white socks are a little much.

What I love – always – about Vogue Korea is the amazingly eclectic and often startlingly gorgeous styling. I love the mash-up of designers with seemingly different aesthetics whose work, when combined, is just incredible. Love the daily pretty when it has the Vogue Kprea signature originality. Honestly, I think Asian and darker skinned models are a lot more visually striking than most Caucasian models are. I think it’s partly because we are always slammed in the face with white models, that seeing an editorial with models who are not white is always a breath of fresh air. But anyways, Love this.
