Looking at the position of the heel on the sculptural ones, I don’t think they’d be any more difficult to walk in than a pair of wedges or stilettos. We’re used to seeing the heel go straight down to the point. The point is in the same location on these shoes…they’re just shaped differently.

YAY to “yawn, um, yay,” depending on the shoe. And with the caveat that since I can’t afford ‘em, and don’t wear heels that high any more anyway, I am entirely ignoring all practical issues like stability, pain, and twisted ankles.

I think the red and the black with ankle ribbons and abalone shell (?) on the heels are the best. The chain ankle strap the least interesting.

The most striking ones are the one’s with the inverted wedge, which I believe was invented by Ferragamo in the 1930′s. I think they would be more comfortable than stiletto’s of the same height.

And I bet they’re actually not hard to walk in, once you get past feeling like your heel should have vertigo — the sole under your heel is built up enough to provide support, and the shoe heel is positioned right under your arch (in fact, if you’re like me and your arches hate you after straining all day in heels, this might actually be more comfortable)

If I recall correctly, Joanna Coles was shown wearing similar contraptions in the PRAS finale (when the final three visited her in her office) and I remember cringing as I watched her awkwardly walk down the hall in these things. The idea is cool and they may photograph very well, but these are not wearable shoes. So NAY.

My feeling re: heels is that if they’re going to be ridiculously high, they may as well be sexy and ridiculously high.

I’ve never felt like wedges were sexy, and I can’t say I feel like most of these are, either. The stilettos, yes. The others…well, they’re nice to look at, but the word that comes to mind is “funky” rather than “hot”. And if I’m wearing heels that high, I want people to be thinking “HOT” in gigantic flashing neon letters as I walk past, you know?

The problem with shoes that are really wearable art is that they are frequently destructive to the body. These are great to look at, and if someone wanted to carry me around on a litter from place to place, I’d be all over these. Sadly, lacking muscle-bound eye candy to haul my carcass around, I value my long term ability to walk without a walker in 30 years more than I value the aesthetic awesomeness of these shoes. Nay for this girl.

There are a ga-zillion shoes out there that I would love to call my own. None of these are on my list.
Too bad because I love the medium he used on some, (the faux tortoise shell, abalone shell, croc).
The shapes are a turn-off for me. And the ones that are straight up spikey heels are meh to me.
And I think for the rest of my life; I will never buy another pair of heels that doesn’t have at least a little bit
of lift, or platform under the toes. I’m hooked. They’re just more comfortable and they look better.

I don’t know why everyone thinks these would be impossible to walk in. The heel is still located at the center of balance for your foot. Just the normal location of where a typical looking heel would be is carved out. It’s FAR easier to walk in heels where the center of balance is in the middle of your foot (and lower down) rather than at the very back up high where your heel is. Basic science at work Try drawing an invisible line from the back of the shoe down to where the heel is on these. Do they look normal now?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I haven’t walked in these, but I’m thinking the placement of the heel would make them easier to walk in as compared to normal heels. The only thing that may kill some of them for me is the ankle wrap ribbon thingy. I actually have a pair of killer looking heels that tie around my ankle and they are almost impossible to walk in. I can’t ever seem to get the ribbons tied right…of course, it may be a failing of my particular shoe and old Tom here might’ve figured out how to do a tie shoe properly.

I think we need to define “walking.” Going from a cab to the restaurant to the cab to your home? If that’s what we’re talking about, then maybe one could wear these without agonizing pain. I have a couple of pairs of heels that I will occasionally break out for those types of occasions. But if we’re talking about standing in these for any length of time or walking anymore than 20 feet with ample rest periods? That’s gonna be agony. There’s a reason why those heels that I wear for the former pretty much never make it out of my closet.

And if Joanna Coles can’t walk in shoes like these, no way am I going to be able to.

Absolute YEA. They are so fun. Who cares if they’re not meant for long distances? Even if they’re just for the walk from the house car to the restaurant/theatre/club entrance, they’re worth it. Heels like these, and much better, have been made by United Nude for some years now.
Seems to me like the brilliant, innovative designs of this expensive-but-still-affordable shoe company have been copied.
United Nude shoes are truly structural art, beautifully engineered, and actually wearable.
I have a couple of pairs. They’ve always turned heads, but maybe not so much anymore since the designs have been co-opted by couturiers and will eventually be filtered through the system all the way to Payless.

Nay but not so much because of the heel placement, because that in itself is walkable (as another poster wrote, Dutch brand United Nudes has used that heel for years) but the sheer height of the shoe will make them very painful if not completely impossilble to walk on.

I’ve actually read that a centered heel makes the most sense for balance, physics-wise. Not sure I believe that, but these have a cool vibe and the delicate shape that has been missing for years now. I’d try them on, at least. Yea!

even the wedges are gonna be hell to walk in. otoh, every piece is stunning. tom ford is a great designer. one of the very few top tier we still have, now that john galliano is out at dior. there are designers that i, personally, like just as much but tom ford does something they dont: he appeals to all spaces & faces across the spectrum, from the wild to the conservative, much in the way of YSL. for absolute clarity of vision & the startling way he gets that vision interpreted in three dimensions, almost nobody comes close.
