Poor Scarlett. It seems very few of the Bitter Kittens liked your Versace dress. Those bitches.

Scarlett Johansson featured in the May 2012 issue of Vogue magazine photographed by Mario Testino.

Maybe this will make them love you, girl. We certainly loved it.

Sure, the fashion and styling is a bit obvious (with the notable exception of the shoe on her head), but damn if those ’30s Hollywood styles suit her. Ruffalo looks good in tails, but it would have been nice if they’d switched up his looks a little. Then again, as many charms as Mark Ruffalo has, it’s pretty clear who the star of this editorial is.

And now we feel like watching Bringing Up Baby tonight.

  Thin Man was great (rather than just nice) for precisely one reason. Remaking it without the chemistry that Myrna Loy and William Powell had makes about as much sense as remaking Fred & Ginger movies without the dancing.

  Trying to be positive: A remake of The Thin Man is going to be a completely different animal, Loy and Powell were a symbiotic presence in that movie. Not to mention that I doubt any modern movie would try to re-create such a light-hearted glorification of functioning alcoholism. As long as they re-invent, and don’t try to replicate, it might be o.k.

I find the post-production to be super distracting in this editorial. Her, Ruffalo, the jaguar, all look like Colorforms or paper dolls just stuck in wherever. It all reads really flat and VERY fake. Maybe I’m just being harsh because I deal with digital images and do graphic design work in my day to day, but the compositing looks like it was done by a drunk orangutan.

Nice dress, though, ScarJo. Oh, wait, that’s three dresses you have to squint at to see the differences. My bad.

Can I just insert into the conversation: Stephen Jones designed that hat, it’s not just a shoe on the head. He is definitely referencing Elsa Schaiparelli’s famous shoe hat from the 30′s. Schaiparelli was influenced by surrealist artists like Dali. She created some truly interesting shapes and motifs in her clothing because of it. It’s a great nod to her just as an exhibit based on her work is about to to open. And Stephen Jones is a pretty talented and adventurous designer as well.

T-Lo, I think it’s time you started educating (some of) your readership on fashion history and/or the meaning/reason behind high fashion editorials. Many of the commentariat seem to not understand fashion shoots aren’t meant to illustrate the clothing as the average person would wear it on the street. It’s tedious and tiresome trudging through all the “who would wear that!” and “what were they thinking!?!” comments. Let’s elevate the discourse.
