Just wanted to let you know that we totally dig your hipster t-shirt and were wondering how much time you spent this morning lovingly applying mud just so to your boots to give you that “sensitive ditch-digger who probably also writes poetry” look that the ladies just eat up with a spoon.

Also, can we have your sunglasses? And what’s in the bags?

I’ve always wondered how these stars get their shoes scuffed up. Presumably, the only time they get dirty is for a film, and I doubt they wear their own shoes.

Do they sell them pre-scuffed? Is there a shoe-unshiner service out there?

  You can get them pre-scuffed for sure. I was surprised once by boots that I bought via catalog that had that treatment. You couldn’t see that level of detail in the photo and I must have missed some sort of “distressed” descriptor in the copy.

    Not a lot of mud in L.A., no matter the time of year. It’s in a desert and they pipe all the water in from Northern California. Which is how perpetually rainy Humboldt County can have a drought scare, L.A. takes all the water. The more you know!

      Not quite. They take a huge chunk from the East, which is why the Colorado doesn’t flow to the sea the way it once did and it’s why there’s the Hoover dam.
      
      Meanwhile, we Bay Area types (some, not all), get our water from the Hetch-Hetchy–formerly a beautiful valley said to rival Yosemite.
      
      I’d say the main issue with mud in LA is not the lack of rain, but the lack of dirt. So maybe Ryan’s shoes were imported.

        Awww, thanks–I actually know the water stuff because I’m a native Californian. The water issue is one of the reasons northern California resents southern California, though southern California doesn’t seem to notice. The southern folk think we’re sort of quirky with picturesque scenery. Those to far north resent the Bay Area as well as parts farther south.
        
        Anyway, the water levels are all about snowfall–most of the state just doesn’t get much rain–the north coast (i.e. Humboldt, Del Norte) being an exception.
        
        Sorry, more than anyone wants to know.

        I was just in Palm Springs – wow, what a totally artificial environment. Rock and scrub – and green lawns and petunias. I am from the east coast but am interested in water rights so I don’t blame you for resenting southern California.

        Yeah, Palm Springs is just strange. Las Vegas, over the state line, even more so (it’s the city the Hoover Dam and hydropower made). Growth in the Southwest is unsustainable.
        
        That said, the big water hogs in the state are farms.

    Mud and grass don’t cause scuff marks. It takes daily wear of the same shoes to achieve that level of scuff, and I speak from lots of happy experience. It requires crawling/tromping around rough areas, not strolling around on pavement to grab lunch occasionally.

  Yesterday I went with a male friend to Neiman Marcus to make a point: clothes are way more expensive than he thinks, expensive clothes are even more expensive. We ended up in the men’s shoe department where we saw an entire display of leather Chuck Taylors with black scuff marks loving applied to the white toe-caps.

Predictably, I adored him in Drive.

Predictably, because I find romantic comedies miserably depressing, and he always looks like he just stepped out of one. It’s those All-American Hipster Vegan Poet good looks, you know? It’s the perfect hair and the sweet, slightly soulful smile.

Drive bundled all of those things up in its bloody-knuckled fist and hit me in the face with it for two straight hours. And I loved every moment of it.

…. this, though, is just a return to meh.
