This is hilarious to any of us who can remember those halcyon days of mooseknuckle and Tiger Beat hair.

You wouldn’t believe how many guyditorials we consider featuring and wind up rejecting. Easily three for every one that appears on the site. Guyditorials are just so damn boring; jeans, t-shirts, one button-down, one polo and maybe a sweater. Add a car, a desert backdrop and a brooding star who touches his face a lot and you’ve just copied about 98 percent of them.

And while, to our eyes, these looks are heinously ugly, we have to say the whole set of pictures brought smiles to our faces. Sometimes, you just have to let the gays put together a good guyditorial in order to make it fun. So feather your hair and break out your high-waisted bell bottoms, guys. According to Out, it’s time once again.

We’ll just sit on the sidelines and laugh, if you don’t mind. We can’t believe we ever wanted to grow up to look just like this (and drive a van with an airbrushed unicorn on the side), but trust us, plenty of the boys of the ’70s thought these looks were the absolute most.

No underwear allowed, as with those tight white jeans, everyone knew exactly what was going on in their pants. (Of course, there were guys who actually stuffed back then)

I like the last photo for a current look but it doesn’t fit with the rest of the photo shoot.

I was a teenager then, and the shirts are dead-on (that Missoni is terrific), and the pants are right for the most part (although the Abboud ones don’t have a 70′s fit … they’re a little high-waisted and/or not quite tight enough). But I NEVER, EVER saw any guy rat his hair in the back to create the look the guy with the longer hair is wearing. Long hairstyles for men always tried to differentiate themselves from women by appearing super masculine. If a guy’s hair had that appearance at all (think Barry Gibb or maybe even David Cassidy on a windy day), it had to do with the shape of his head or just waking up … it wasn’t intentional. This looks like “That Girl” drag. I can’t believe how much he looks like Gilda Radner in some of those shots.

But I always thought I got a raw deal as a gay man because I was just a young teen in the mid-seventies. By the time I came out in the early 80s, being a super-skinny guy in the mold of Robbie Benson, Michael Sarrazin or Chris Sarandon was no longer the ideal. I was a skinny dude in a world where you were expected to be a puffed-up gym boy. Alas, timing is sometimes everything.

Let me tell you why I hate James Jeans. Every time Fabulous Artist James Jean does a pattern for someone (Prada, GAP, whatever) and I try to search for it, all the results I get are for “James Jeans.” I don’t even know what they are but it’s the wrong James and not as fabulous.

Seriously, please don’t tell me that’s their own hair, because if so this is supposed to be some sort of ironic take on actual ’70s hair, and I do not approve. Will not sign off.

Just about the only great thing about ’70s styles for men, other than boots, was long hair. Don’t mess it up with this bird’s nest crap. My nerves won’t take it.

The late 60s and 70s imprinted upon me that long hair on guys is sexy. And the brief period when I was adventurous, self confident and single coincided with the period when short hair was in, which I felt was quite unfair. (Nowadays, well, the age appropriate guys don’t have hair you *want* to see long, but that’s a personal problem, neither her nor there. Sigh.)

Oh God. I think I dated one of these guys (or their analog). Of course – you’d need a trip in the Way-back Machine to find them again (or I could just break out Patti Smith’s ‘Horses’ and remember). Looking at those jeans now – all I kept thinking about was Duluth Trading Company’s ‘Ball-room’ Jeans. Glad those weren’t around then. I think I enjoy the Robert Plant specials much better.

The fashion and overall editorial is a bit too literal for my tastes.

Mu uncle had a yellow van with a soaring eagle painted on it and the words “Free Bird” scrolled across it. Just doesn’t get more 70′s than that!

The only thing that would make these even more perfect would have been to include some Tiffany hanging lamps and diagonal wood planking on the walls. Oh, and don’t forget the asparagus ferns. And baskets. Loads and loads of baskets. And not just the Out Magazine kind.
